702 Looking at Our Texts as Windows by Latrice Baez

Think about your texts and their world:
Are the characters different than you? Does the text help you to see a different perspective? Are you learning something new? Write down how your text is a Window. If it isn't a Window, then how is it a mirror?

My text, Slaves Among Us by Monique Villa, is a window because it is giving me insight into the experiences of people who have experienced the horrors of human trafficking. This is not something that I have experienced in my life and I do not personally know anyone who has experienced this either.

On page 1 it talks about modern slavery, human trafficking, and and how slaves of today are not chained up like they were in the past. Instead, they walk around unnoticeable in most instances, blending in with the rest of us. The text states, “For example, we can end up tipping one at a respectable hotel without knowing his or her circumstances; we wear dresses and accessories one has made; we can even be seated on a plane next to one. They look like us, although they inhabit a totally different universe”. This was eye opening to me because when I go out to eat or stay at a hotel I automatically assume that the people employed there are all getting paid for their work. It never crossed my mind that some of those people could technically be slaves who are forced to work and aren’t compensated.

This has opened my mind to some of the things that may be going on secretly right under my nose. I am looking forward to continuing reading this book to see how it can be even more of a window into the world to help me learn and grow.

Homestuck is about a group of friends playing a game then after a certain point in the game a metior is going to hit one of the characters house. I can see each characters reaction to the situation they're in.

My text, The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, is a window because it's showing me the experiences that hobbits have to go through when staying away from giant humans like us. Nobody can experience this because this is fiction and this is like an imaginary world that nobody knows about. Technically this is real in a sense because hobbits have interactions with humans.

On page 4 it talks about the main hobbit that we're seeing. His name is Bilbo Baggins. He is a hobbit trying to stay away from trouble. Although this is fiction, this could be happening somewhere in the world right now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

The way my text is a window (Jurassic park lost world) is because this isn't possible it’s placed in a fictional world where humans bring back the dinosaurs which isn’t possible in the real world (at least yet...)now even tho this is a fictional world it’s possible in the future this could be possible since the world off genetics is constantly expanding. It’s not too different from the real world but still fictional since dinosaurs can’t be able to come back to life
