         <title>DEEP WATER HORIZON SPILL</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>It was a point source, wellhead blow out where 4.9 million barrels of petroleum spilled into the ocean. Pollution was tried to be cleaned by booms and skimmers. It did extensive damage to marine and wildlife habitats, fishing, and tourism. Dolphins and marine life died in record numbers and 11 humans died. Marine organisms still are trying to recover, but mass deaths put a dent in the populations. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>10.8 million gallons or crude oil spilled for a few days and is considered to be one of the most devastating human endured environmental disasters. It was point source and the cause was the grounding of the Exxon Valdez oil tanker. The spill killed many salmon sea otters seals and seabirds. Oil can still be found on the shoreline. Even though they tried to clean it with burning, mechanical clean up, and chemical disputants, marine life populations were devastated and still trying to recover. </div>]]></description>

It was non point source and officials did not pay attention to the cleanliness of the water. It provoked cancer and other ailments. Obama signed the Janey Ensminger Act into las which aided medical care to people who were affected. They also pay attention to the water now. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The inactive mine slowly leaded water into the animals river. It sent a yellow orange plume of toxic heavy metals (iron and aluminum) into the rivers. It was a non point source. It did not have a long term impact on the water quality. It affected the native Americans and caused them to move somewhere else. Some of the metals settled in the river bed and it doesn’t seem to have effected the fish. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Houses sat on top of toxic industrial waste that had been buried in the 40s and 50s by a local company. Overtime, waste bubbled up into backyards and cellars. It was non point source. It is still oozing 35 years later and most residents sold their land to the federal government. It causes sickness including cysts miscarriages and others. They are trying to clean it by capping the canal with clay, plastic liner, and topsoil. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The company dumbed 370 million gallons of chromium tainted wastewater into unlined waste water spreading ponds around Hinkley. Chromium was used to prevent rust in machinery but eventually polluted the ground water. It was non point. It was cleaned up by ethanol. It caused people to move away from the toxicity which caused them to have health problems. Those chromium 6 toxins continue to linger as the efforts of disposing them are prominent. </div>]]></description>

         <title>CUYAHOGA RIVER FIRE</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Floating pieces of oil slicked debris caught fire on the river by sparks of a passing train. It was point source pollution. Although the fire didn’t last too long, environmental problems were raised. It caused death to five people and the river was inhabitable by marine life. The city worked to reclaim the river and ultimately reached its goal. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Wells in Woburn was polluted with toxic chemicals from industrial waste. It came from toxic compounds used to cure leather and TCE. It was point source pollution. Children died, leukemia was prevalent, and water was limited. The water today is still not okay to drink and is a norm in many other societies. Government outlawed people disposing hazardous waste into the water. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The point source disaster started when 10000 gal of methylcyclohexanemethanol spilled into the river. 300000 residents were without access to potable water. The toxins that spilled were to wash coal. People didn’t have water and was declared a state emergency. It is still a problem today and was somewhat solved by government plans. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This nonpoint event supposedly started with runoff from cattle. Cryptosporidium passed through the filtration system that arose from the sewage treatment plant. People got stomach cramps, fever, and dehydrated because of this pathogen. By treating the water, the outbreak went away with it. There was no long term effect. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Groundwater was polluted and water contained toxins like chromium and carcinogen. It was a point source pollution that cake fro, a coal fired power plant. Burning coal creates a residue called coal ash which contain heavy amounts of metals. They limited the coal plant which led to a decrease of illness and an increase in cleanliness. Long term affects were limited. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Run off from the Farms near the Mississippi caries an excess amount of nutrients. This created a hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s considered to be non point source. Marine life dissipated. Fertilizer was used less but still is a problem. The environment will take a long time to bounce back. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>People discharged pcbs into the river (point source). Also, untreated sewage and mercury were prominent.it was anthropogenic.  It led people to be sick and wildlife to be filled with pollution. Acts are still in place today so the problem is gradually getting better. Government worked to get laws passed to create a safe environment. </div>]]></description>
