         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>P : </strong>The Japanese changed our schools and the way we learn as they wanted to promote Japanese culture in schools .<strong><br>Ev : </strong>The students had to sing the Japanese National Anthem , Kimigayo , during the Japanese Occupation. And had to learn the Japanese language in place of English.<strong><br>E : </strong>They also had to take part in activities , such as gardening and cleaning , that promoted Asian values like hard work and humility. And movies , books , newspapers and radio broadcasts were also used for propaganda purposes .</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>P :</strong>Black market existed and was sold at a high price as there was shortage of goods. <strong><br>Ev : </strong>Due to the shortage of goods , goods were sold at Black market at a high price, they were selling it at a high price as they wanted to earn money and hence buy more goods . E.g : 60 kg of rice costed $5000 , hence , most of the people living in Singapore were unable to afford food.<strong><br>E :</strong>Some of them were able to obtain goods by working for the Japanese. And the condition was worsened as they decreased the value of the new currency (Banana notes)  by the Japanese . But food rationing was introduced to solve food shortage.</div><div> </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>P : </strong>The Japanese ordered the Allied prisioners of war (POWs) to do menial task outside of their camps.<strong><br>Ev : </strong> Menial tasks such as repairing and cleaning the dock facilities, water works and the airfields damaged by Japanese bombs during the invasion.<strong><br>E : </strong>In camps , the POWs and other internees were also given very little amount of food and were also tasked to do various jobs and hence , many of the POWs became very thin and malnourished and had little clothing to cover themselves up.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>P : </strong>When they were under the enemy occupation , they were all friends and they had the opportunity to make friends with teachers from the Chinese , Malays ,and Tamil-medium schools , and it was then when they realised how people lived , their difficulties and the types of problems they faced<strong><br>Ev : </strong>And they had a newfound sense of responsibility as they depended on the colonial government until it was during the J.O . <strong><br>E : </strong>They had to take orders and carry them out by themselves. And they felt like they had to do things themselves and thats how they have a sense if responsibility.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>P : </strong>The Japanese changed the way of life during the occupation as efforts to dispel the superiority of the white man.<strong><br>Ev :</strong>The Japanese sought to get support from the local population living in Syonan-to but they also brought fear and hardship to the lives of many people during the occupation.<strong><br>E :</strong>When the Japanese came they brought more hardship over rather than freedom and liberation from the colonists and acted as a dictatorship during the occupation with strict rules and anyone found breaking it will be punished harshly.</div><div>The people experienced fear as the Japanese Military police(Kempeitai) who was incharge of removing people even suspected of being anti-Japanese and they carried out a ethnic-cleansing operation called Sook Ching when they arrived as they sought to clear out any anti-Japanese elements but they mainly targeted the Chinese. All chinese men aged 18 to 50 needed to report to centres which Japanese officers interviewed them and if they suspected they were anti-Japanese they will arrest them but if they was not suspected they would been given a stamp to indicate that they were screened. </div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>P : </strong>The Kempeitai was sent to remove people who were suspected of being anti - Japanese and they carried out the Sook Ching or ‘Cleansing’ operation that was targeted in removing anti - Japanese elements. The Sook Ching was targeted at the Chinese.<strong><br>Ev : </strong>All Chinese men aged 18 to 50 had to report to mass screening centres and the interrogators put bars of wood on the floor and they tied them up.<strong><br>E : </strong>And they had to kneel on very rough wood , they tied them to the wood so they couldn’t move and they applied electric shocks on them.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>P : </strong>If people doesn't respect or bow to the guard,it's a sign of disrespect.The Japanese felt that the people were bowing to the emperor if you were bowing to the guard,so if u don't bow you'll get beaten up badly. <strong><br>Ev :</strong>As seen from the source "My mother got beaten up very badly because she didn't want to bow to the guard" shows us how the people were treated when they don't bow.<br><strong><br>E : </strong>And The <em>Kempetai</em> were also known for randomly accusing people for participating in anti-Japanese activities, and 1 of their favourite torture techniques was to pump water into a person’s stomach before jumping on to their abdomen . </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>P : </strong>During the Japanese Occupation , people suffered and had very little food to survive and no proper education as most of the schools were closed down.<strong><br>Ev : </strong>Food shortage occured and thats when the ‘Banana notes’ existed and food rationing was there to solve it . And they had to learn everything in the Japanese way , like singing Japanese National Anthem and it changed the way they learn.
