Ev : Due to the shortage of goods , goods were sold at Black market at a high price, they were selling it at a high price as they wanted to earn money and hence buy more goods . E.g : 60 kg of rice costed $5000 , hence , most of the people living in Singapore were unable to afford food.
E :Some of them were able to obtain goods by working for the Japanese. And the condition was worsened as they decreased the value of the new currency (Banana notes)  by the Japanese . But food rationing was introduced to solve food shortage.

Ev :The Japanese sought to get support from the local population living in Syonan-to but they also brought fear and hardship to the lives of many people during the occupation.
E :When the Japanese came they brought more hardship over rather than freedom and liberation from the colonists and acted as a dictatorship during the occupation with strict rules and anyone found breaking it will be punished harshly.
The people experienced fear as the Japanese Military police(Kempeitai) who was incharge of removing people even suspected of being anti-Japanese and they carried out a ethnic-cleansing operation called Sook Ching when they arrived as they sought to clear out any anti-Japanese elements but they mainly targeted the Chinese. All chinese men aged 18 to 50 needed to report to centres which Japanese officers interviewed them and if they suspected they were anti-Japanese they will arrest them but if they was not suspected they would been given a stamp to indicate that they were screened.

Ev :As seen from the source "My mother got beaten up very badly because she didn't want to bow to the guard" shows us how the people were treated when they don't bow.
