Skills and qualities of a good leader

decisiveness - leader must be decisive when in charge of a team, if decisions take too long people could potentially be put in danger, and a team could get confused if you change your mind.

adaptability - leaders must be adaptable in certain situations, as circumstances can change very quickly, meaning different approaches must be implemented at a moments notice.

courage - if leaders are not courageous, their team may not believe in their decisions, and think better of their own. For a team to follow and believe in a leader, they must be courageous and inspiring to the team.

compassion - team members are more likely to respect and follow someone, who also, respects and believes in them. This is why being compassionate when leading a team is essential, if a leader shows lack of care towards someone, chances are they wont care too much about their leader.

communication - Leaders need to be the prime example of good communication. This is because , if others are expected to follow their orders, then their orders must be clear, concise, and make complete sense to the team. Furthermore, leaders should encourage the team to communicate whilst they complete any given task, and further keep track of its progress using communication.

organisation - Leaders must be organised as they must set an example to their team. If a leader wasn't organised task could be delayed due to something being missing, or the needed tools and equipment for the task are missing, meaning the team aren't meeting expected standards. Other team members may think being disorgansied is okay, and take example form a disorganised leader.

multi-tasking - Performing more than one task at any given time is an essential ability a leader must possess. This is because leaders will more than often have more than one thing to do, whether is be completing work themselves, whilst monitoring their teams progress in their own tasks, or writing reports whilst trying to meet work deadlines, leaders must be able to balance both.

planning - Leaders must display strong planning skills. This because if their team tries to carry out a task without a plan, work could be left to the last minute, and therefore not be completed. Furthermore, there is a big risk something could go wrong whilst trying to complete the task, all because plan wasn't devised.

motivating - Motivating a team is a basic thing a leader must do. Low motivation = low productivity which will result in the entire team, leader included, displaying a poor image. This is why leaders must motivate their team to work their hardest and to their best ability when doing anything that they may face.
