To achieve a COGmas Classroom Award you should aim to cover at least 8 Emotion Works COGmas activities with your class from the activity list suggestions shared on the Primary COGmas Launchpad for 2025, or you can also use your own ideas or examples from previous years COGmas if you prefer. So long as you deliver at least 8 festive activities that cover a nice breadth of Cog Model & Cog focus work, that is fine.

For a COGmas School Award your school leads will be able to co-ordinate and apply for this if every class has achieved a Classroom Award, OR if all classes are collaborating on a whole school project involving an equivalent amount of work to around 8 activities of EW activities per class.

Classroom Award Application

School Award Application

We have made a Cogmas song, talked about the cogs for different emotions, made paper chains to represent each cog, played guess the emotion headband addition, we also played pin the regulation strategy on Santa. We made snowman cards with different emotions of their faces. We also presented our learning at assembly and played our Christmas song for all to hear.

We particularly enjoyed making a Cogmas song and making paper chains.

Each class across the school participated in Cogmas 2025 by following the interests of the children and prior learning of Emotion Works. All cogs were covered in our school by each stage agreeing to complete Cogmas inspired activities suitable to each age and stage. The display was then created by combining evidence of learning and activities in our main corridor next to the Emotion Works library. Both staff and pupils enjoyed applying their prior Emotion Works knowledge to these Christmas theme activities, exploring their favourite characters such as The Grinch and Excitable Edgar. Overall, this was a very positive experience and a fantastic way to channel excitement and festive spirit across the school.

Participating in Cogmas this year was a fantastic confidence building experience for both staff and pupils to demonstrate their growing understanding of the Emotion Works cog model. Allowing class teachers to complete activities that suited their age and stage has allowed us to take steps in gathering evidence for our Silver Award application and created a nice buzz around school in the lead up to the holidays. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in Cogmas this year - we will be joining in again next year.

Our Whole School Project for Advent:

This advent we decided to work on the Emotion Works Cogs through a Christmas Picture Book approach with the whole school.

We selected 15 Christmas Picture Books for the days of advent we would be in school. Classes were paired up (younger and older pupils) to work on the challenges set by our friendly elves. Each day the groups went to our Christmas tree to collect a wrapped up book and a red envelope with a task. They take it back to their group and read/watch the story and then look at the challenge. They then work together to answer the questions. There is always a cog to complete which has been linked to the story. We made sure all the cogs were covered throughout advent. We also tied this in with Children's Rights (as we are a gold school) and our school values.

Once the challenge has been completed each group posted it in the Elf Delivery Cogmas Box, then they were added to our display.

This has been a great way to work on the cogs altogether and reinforce all the learning we do about the cogs throughout the year!

Most importantly the children have really enjoyed it and have loved working with other children to talk about their learning.

Each year our school takes part in a Christmas classroom door decoration competition. The Emotion Work leads agreed that it would be great if every class created a 'Cogmas' door showing their prior Emotion Works knowledge. This year each class from Nursery to P7 including our Forest Schools took part (which meant many classes took part in 2 Cogmas door activities). Each class had to decorate their classroom door with their class inspired by a Christmas song, story, film or poem using these to look at a range of emotions portrayed within the different texts explored.

The wonderful 'Cogmas' doors created engaging Cogmas learning across the school, showcasing Southesk's understanding and journey of Emotion Works so far whilst we are working towards our Gold Award. It showcases Christmas collaboration and creativity and is wonderful for all to visit each others door and explore learning that has taken place in other classes. The staff and pupils thoroughly enjoyed this task using Emotion Works. It allowed everyone to revisit areas in preparation for our Whole School Emotion Works IDL in term 3 - a focus for going for Gold!
