In this poem there are quite a few figures of speech, some being, simile, personification, and metaphors. One example of this is the smile, "The twinges that sting like needles his leg and neck, the murderous buckshot and the bullets." This simile is a great example because it shows us what the feeling was in that moment as well as just the simile in total. It later goes on to say, "All these I fell or am." Showing it was a feeling referencing it to something like needles to explain to the readers. "I am a hounded slave, I wince at the bite of the dogs." A metaphor referring to once again the feeling of the author and this also helps us with the theme and the menacing of the poem.

This is the theme in the poem, he really speaks on how no matter what your skin color is, or what gender you re we are all the same, all people should be treated equally nd that is really important to know, especially during this time, in the 1800's there was no guidance on this, there were slaves and women were treated differently, he was trying to show something that the majority of the population did not see at all. He was trying to show that we are all the same.
