One example is on page #188, Doon and Lina are questioning each other on what matches, candles and paddles are. This shows that things aren't always what they seem to be because the government/mayor didn't tell kids like Lina and Doon what matches, candles and paddles are. Not telling them shows how much the kids don't know, how things aren't always what they seem to be

Another example of the theme, "Things Aren't Always What They Seem to be" is on page #158. Doon finds out that the mayor has been lying to the City of Ember because the mayor/government is enjoying food and things the city needs. This is happening when the city is in desperate needs of supplies when the mayor and government gets to enjoy all of them. This shows the universal theme is things aren't always what they seem to be because the mayor/government is lying to the cities faces, they get to enjoy things the city really needs

A third example is when Lina and Doon confront the guard talking about how the mayor is stealing. (pages #163-165). Later on in the book they are "wanted" for spreading rumors (page #205). They were telling the truth which shows that things aren't always what they seem to be. The guards were stealing too, like the mayor, and since Lina and Doon found out they are turning it around on them. Now the public thinks they're liars, that really proves the theme, "Things Aren't Always What They Seem to be"

A example or something similar that happened in history is when Harriet Tubman was a secret spy. She was sneaking slaves to a safe place. This was like how at the end of the book the rest of Ember came to join them, in a better place. The theme, things aren't always what they seem to be, appears in Harriet's life a lot. It seemed like she was doing bad things because sneaking slaves out of slavery is against the law but she actually doing something good. The people she "rescued" were in a very bad life so when she "broke the law" she was fighting for a change in slavery which is a great thing.

She actually just moved it so it wouldn't get stepped on. I thought she took it when really, she was helping me.

In the Harry Potter series you think Snape is a bad guy until the 6th book. You figure out he doesn't like Harry because his dad was a real jerk to him. Things weren't what they seemed to be because it seems Snape is bad but he actually is good! The Harry Potter Series shows an example of things not being what they seem to be because Snape seemed to be bad when he was just very mad about James being Harry's dad. James was really mean to him as a kid.

I think the theme, "Things Aren't Always What They Seem to be", appears so many times because the author wanted to show the reader to look at things more clearly. For example on page #205, if you were just a fellow citizen in Ember you would think that Doon and Lina are criminals. If you looked more closely you can tell that their is something fishy. Like a bunch of questions come up, how come I didn't hear these rumors? How would children know these things? This proves that the theme appears so many times because the author had a purpose of showing people to look more closely, because things aren't always what they seem.

Second Movie/Book Example

A second movie/book example is in the Chronicles of Narnia. Edmond thought the "Queen" of Narnia was good because she gave him Turkish delight. She actually was only doing that to make Edmond think she's good so she could have a Son of Adam and a Daughter of Eve. This is an example of the theme, things aren't always what they seem to be, because from Edmond's perspective it seemed like the "Queen" of Narnia is good when really she was bad. The reason she gave him Turkish delight was to make her seem good, so she could get one step closer to completely ruling Narnis
