         <title>Responsibility of Government in an economy</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Earth is being stifled by pollution, caused by deforestation and depleted by&nbsp; exploitation. It is against this background that governments of the world are united in educating their people as to the need to protect the environment in which they live<br>Through various government ministries and statutory organisations the governments of the Caribbean have undertaken to protect and manage natural resources. Due to signs of heavy degradation, laws geared towards the protection and enhancement of natural resources have been passed.<br>After the Stockholm conference on Human Environment in 1972, many Caribbean countries renewed their efforts to protect and maintain the Caribbean environment. This conference encouraged the formation of resource conservation department, environmental control divisions as part of the town and country planning authorities of these nations.<br>The aim is to incorporate environmental management principles in the development control process.<br><br>Some of major environmental problems of the world.<br><br>Atmospheric contamination&nbsp;<br>Studies by the United Nations (UN) in the early 1980s have shown that one billion people live in urban area that are exposed daily to levels of soot particles, poisonous gases such as sulpher, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide that threaten health. It is the fear of many that this greenhouse gas will cause global warming.<br><br>Destruction of forests<br>The rate of deforestation is alarming as three quarter of the temperate forest and half of the tropical forest of the world is already lost.<br><br>Land degradation<br>Desertification is threatening a third of the world's surface. The likelihood of million of people have been threatened as in some parts of Africa, the Sahara Desert has progressed 200 miles in just 20 years.<br><br>Species in danger<br>Toxic or hazardous wastes&nbsp;<br>Water Scarcity<br><br>The government has put in pace laws to deal with public health, watersheds, beaches, forestry, fisheries, surface and underground water, clean air, natural parks, mining, petroleum and quarries control. The government recognizes that is important to draft additional regulations and strengthen existing ones for more effective reinforcement.<br><br><br>&nbsp;&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
