Student voice refers to each student having both something to say and the confidence to say it. Then the opportunity for them to do so must be created. This requires that the student is listened to and heard, which implies that they have an influence on some action.

The better and more fully that students engage in and take responsibility for their learning the more effective the outcome. 

We can therefore use the student voice to;

Establish prior knowledge - What do you know about?

Carry out research and feedback results

Group work

Presentations

Decide together when tests might happen

Contribute to decisions on success criteria

Contribute to the choice or sequence of topics taught

Review to see what needs changing and what is to be continued.

As we are trying to bring focus on this area into our work, a brief review would be worthwhile each term. An annual review would be needed thereafter.

The following needs to be included in the review

Student reflection means students thinking about some item or some action so that they can continuously learn and improve. There are two possibilities here

Both types of reflection are needed otherwise the experience comes and goes and little remains, which is what happens in passive learning.

The better we can help students engage in active learning, the more effective our teaching and learning will be. Students, by engaging in the process of reflection, can make sense of their experiences, ask new questions, challenge their assumptions, and in the process put what they have learned into their long term memory. This is a key part of the process of active learning. 

We can therefore use student reflection to;

Use starter tasks or retrieval practices at the beginning of lessons to reflect on previous material covered.

Stop and provide time at the end of a lesson to reflect on progress made

During a lesson make time to stop and say “Let’s pause and reflect”

Make time to say “stop and think before answering this question” during lessons.

At regular intervals during, and at the end of a topic formally stop and provide time for students to reflect on both

Provide opportunities for students to assess themselves and their classmates and then to reflect on the feedback from their peers.

Provide students with an opportunity to give 

Using the simple 3 - 2 - 1 strategy.

Routinely ask students to evaluate their work in light of the success criteria.

Regularly use the 3 step reflection process of What? So What? Now What? As a simple but effective way of structuring reflection.
