There is no worse feeling that being left out and not wanted. The words "when someone with the authority of a teacher, say, describes the world and you are not in it.....[and] you looked in the mirror and saw nothing" (Emdin, pg 17), can change the view of a persons life in an instant. This quote and picture goes together in my eyes because if someone hears that they are basically nothing, then they are going to see it that no one around them notices them. A child in a situation that puts them at - risk I would say relies on their peers and school as a safe zone for acceptance. I think it is important for all students, in every situation, should see their life as worthy and great; that their future is so bright and just ahead of them.

On a daily basis we are constantly judging and being judged by people we do not even know. Although judging is an automatic first reaction when seeing someone, everyone should try to view the judgement through the other persons eyes and ask themselves why they think the person they are judging would act that way, dress that way, react that way, whatever the case may be. In the book, the author talks about his experience in school. Edmin states on page 22 that he heard a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot and "jumped out of my seat and underneath my desk". He goes to explain that just a week before this incident in school there had been shots fired at his apartment complex, so he reacted as if he was being shot out. The teacher he says just sent him to the principal, while classmates laughed at him. I do not agree with that response one bit. In areas that the income is lower and the neighborhoods are not the best, any person, especially the teacher, should react differently. The teacher automatically assumed he was just acting out, when in reality he was scared and now he was getting punished for that. No one, including the teacher, can really understand where the child is coming from and that is why I thought the picture below was a good fit for this quote and message. People are so quick to judge before even knowing what the person has gone through or going through.

A child should not be defined by how they behave in a classroom. I personally see too many teachers doing this. I currently have a little boy in my class that the specials teachers would just rather him stay in the room with myself and my CT. "The teacher limits their understanding to what is happening in the classroom place" (Edmin, pg 23), is the quote I completely agree with him on. Teachers never know what is going on at the child's home but is still so disconnected the child they see as just the trouble maker. The little boy I mentioned is the sweetest boy there is but acts out for attention because he does not get it at home. I found out he lives with his grandma and neither parents are around so he lacks the attention needed while he is at home. The specials teachers do not know that but automatically want to not include him in their activities simply because they do not want to deal with him. The picture I chose was an "F" because sometimes a student is getting a certain grade due to their situations and a teacher is not going to bother to ask if something is going on, they are solely basing the child of their actions.

In my opinion a leader is not a good leader unless they are working with their team. A teacher is not a good teacher if they are only wanting to be viewed as the dictator/controller. "The ability to guide without controlling" (Edmin, pg 52), is a main component to become a successful teacher. A teacher should not have to purely control the class, the class should do as told because they generally want to.If a teacher is involved and actively participating in the activities the class is doing then the students will respect and listen to them more. I view it the same as parenting, a child is going to have more respect if you are helping and caring, rather than just dictating their every move. The picture I included is showing a leader (teacher) not just guiding their team to success by words, but helping their team be successful.

Family to me is defined as a group of individuals, blood or not, sticking by one another and supporting each other in all situations. A classroom of students would be a family, my reasoning is because they learn to trust one another and rely on each other to get help. The quote I chose that best fit this is on page 59 that states, "the educator learns how to value voice and foster family within the classroom". (Edmin, pg 59) In a classroom a child should know that their voice matters to the teacher and that they are heard. If the child knows that they are listened to and that they view the teacher as a classroom family member then the child will trust and confine more into the teacher. I really liked the family tree board in the classroom that I found and think it is a good idea for teachers to have in their classroom, for the student to know that they belong in the room with all of their peers.

There will always be students who are complete opposite in what their reason behind coming to school is or even their view of life. This video shows that even though all of these people are in the same place, they are in there for different reasons but they each have a "role" so to say just like a classroom.

When I was in school we were given nine options and had to choose two of them to complete the assignment. If a teacher is in a school that rapping is an every day thing for the students then allowing them to rap their assignment should be an option allowing them to show their personality. This video is an example of someone rapping their assignment.

The book talks about questions like favorite subject or food, but in the video I chose it goes deeper. The teacher asked the student to write down what they wish she would know about them and the answers were heartbreaking.

I then imagined all of the hurt and dissapointment she was feeling as she sat in class. She, however, seemed to be just fine." (p 104)

This quote to me is about the teacher holding in their emotions even when they want so badly to express them without knowing the entire situation. He was angry at the father thinking he canceled but when speaking to the student she canceled on him. This video goes with this because the angry birds are angry for no real reason other than just the thought, but when coming to the end they find out that was not the case and was not angry anymore, just as the teacher when he found out the situation.

(p105)

This is so crucial in a classroom. A student should come into a classroom and feel not only that it is a safe environment but that the teacher and students are all a support system. The student should have the feeling of not having a problem coming to class because the environment is so welcoming. This video demonstrates this. The class starts off as totally opposite students and just by the power of working together and letting them teach and feel important the class came together and supported each other.

(p 163)

The first day of school or even week of school for everyone gives the feel of how people are going to divide into groups. I chose this because I think it is important for the teacher to notice the first week and how the students react to each other. What I would do if I had older students were to have a series of questions and have them answer them and then have them divide based off of their answer and let them see that no matter what you wear, same or different, you can be friends just by what is in common.

"For the next ten minutes, the teacher encourages students to talk in their neoidigenous language. Street slang is celebrated." (p 180)

I like this so much. I think it is important for students to be able to express themselves in the classroom, even if it is only 10 minutes at the beginning. It gives the students the opportunity to show how they are outside of the classroom and give them a break from having to "act" in school.

"I asked them what major issue was getting in the way of their learning. I grabbed my pen to take notes, and before long a powerful conversation was underway. Within two minutes, they had all agreed that the biggest issue for each of them was that I was raising my voice too often or yelling at students when I got frustrated." (p 186)

This is an issue in every grade level and not only in male classrooms but also female. From experience, I had no reason to listen to someone yelling at me for something I didn't even do, so as soon as a teacher would yell are raise their voice I lost respect and interest in their class for the rest of the semester. Teachers need to realize that students react to how they are acting and speaking.

"Students responded by delving deeply into the assignment." (p 192)

I think this reflects the teacher. If the students are engaged and focused on the assignment then the teacher has explained it and given enough details about it that the students are interested by the work.
