Cuba was led by a dictator that had total control of his citizens. This is very different than the democracy that we live in the United States. We get to vote for our president and our state leaders. We get to propose laws too. In Cuba, they just have to live with the life that the government gives them.

Cuba has a national legislature called the National Assembly of People's Power. It has 612 members elected every 5 years. They meet twice a year to approve decisions by the executive branch. Technically, citizens are allowed to vote in Cuba. But their vote does not have much influence on the government.

The government controls the economy and keeps the worker's salaries low in exchange for free healthcare. They lower the cost of housing for workers too but the houses are in bad condition. Many Cubans are living in shelters. The Cuban government has also been accused of human rights abuses such as torture and wrongful imprisonment. There were also unfair trials and executions.

The Cuban government began to control most of the Cuban lives under the communist system. You were not allowed to disagree with the Cuban government or Fidel Castro in public. Some people were even put in jail. Most people did not like the government and how it controlled their lives. They tried to leave for freedom.
