Working Memory Development in Monolingual and Bilingual Children

This article explores two studies that find cognitive benefits of being bilingual. While it doesn’t specifically mention being bilingual in Spanish, the principles still apply. In this article, researchers compared performance of monolingual and bilingual children on tasks that required different levels of working memory. They found, in both studies, that bilingual children outperformed the monolingual children in working memory tasks. In study 1, bilingual children were more accurate in responding to the more difficult incongruent trials (like game where one has to say what is written and not the color you see) than monolingual children. In the second study, researchers found bilingual children outperformed the monolingual children in both the simpler and more difficult memory condition. Working memory is critical for cognitive development and this studies found that the experience of being bilingual shapes the mind and directs the course of development.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3508395/

Finding Jobs With Fluency in Spanish

This article explains ways that you can earn money using Spanish while working from home. This can be a resource if you are in-between jobs or are looking for extra income. If you are able to use it well, it could be a primary source of income. The interpreting jobs require being able to understand a wide variety of accents from different countries. The translation jobs require that you be able to write well, in addition to simply knowing Spanish. Entry-level positions have low compensation, at only $0.03 per word. So, if you translated a 500-word document, you would be paid $25, but you would also have added taxes because it is work for hire. There are many exciting possibilities with translation careers. For example, if you love to read novels, you could translate them, which would help you to develop your own writing skills and also give you the closest experience to writing successful novels yourself. However, if you translated a standard-length 50,000-word novel at the entry rate, you would only receive $2,500. That is why you would have to work your way up to receive a better salary. Another option is to translate scientific and medical articles into English, which is the lingua franca of research. An academic article has more significance if it has been translated into English, because it is more widely read and cited. There are other options, for example the hospital where I work subscribes to a medication database called Lexicomp which provides medication information translations to patients in all major languages. I have personal experience working with interpreters through the MARTTI company that my hospital uses for online video interpretation. The interpreters are expected to dress professionally as if they are in an office and translate every sentence that the patient and the nurse or doctor say. It can be stressful to the interpreters as some patients are hard of hearing or have dementia, in addition to fact that the interpreters cannot see the patients improving over time as hospital staff can and may subconsciously worry about the health of their patients. It is preferable to find an in-person interpreter position working for a hospital or a courthouse, as online video translation pays by the minute and your pay is dependent on the number of calls you receive.

For more information: https://www.cloudbreak.us/2021/03/16/what-you-need-to-know-about-interpreting-and-martti/

Spanish Can be a Entry Point to Learning Many Languages

This article by an entrepreneurial polyglot highlights many differences and similarities between Spanish and Portuguese, explaining the reasons why Spanish speakers can often learn the closest major related language quickly. It is a comfort to know that up to 95% of the words in both languages have the same root, although differences in spelling, usage, and pronunciation are common. For example, compare these sentences: Elas não tocaram violão, elas tocaram violino. [Portuguese] with: No tocaron la guitarra, tocaron el violín. [Spanish] (Filoco). This means that if you are traveling in South America or Spain, and cross over to Brazil or Portugal, it will be much easier to get around than if you knew no Spanish. A major difference, however, is the increased number of vowels and nasalized sounds in Portuguese that do not occur in Spanish. This accounts for a much greater difficulty understanding spoken Portuguese than written Portuguese if you already know Spanish. However, simply learning another language, such as Spanish, can help you later study other languages. So, if you really want to learn Chinese, but the only classes at your school are in Spanish, you can still use Spanish to become used to learning other languages and develop an ear for listening intently to what is spoken. The number of resources in the United States for learning Spanish is very high compared to other languages, so Spanish is a good beginner language to study if your goal is to learn a few other languages. (Please note: the linked article is not an endorsement of the advertised language learning method on this website.)

Other bibliography: Filoco, Lourdes. Ultimate Portuguese: Beginner-Intermediate. (2001). Living Language.

Bilingual people have access to more than one culture through the knowledge of two languages, so they are able to connect with others that monolingual people cannot as easily connect with because of a language barrier. Bilingual people are also seen to be more tolerant of other cultures, which could be a direct outcome of them knowing more than one language. Additionally, being bilingual increases your opportunities to travel and makes learning a third language easier, which just further increases the social benefits to learning another language.

Learning a second language as an adult can help you prevent cognitive aging as you keep your brain thinking and making new neural connections, and it can also help prevent the risk of certain mental illnesses such as dementia.

I found this article very interesting because it discusses the benefits of learning Spanish. Chi Fang talks about how living in an English-speaking country it is not necessary to learn Spanish because you can always find someone who is bilingual and can help you interpret. Learning Spanish though can truly change your confidence when you are traveling, be able to have a serious conversation with locals, create better relationships, or even find a higher-paying job. Being bilingual increases the opportunities to learn about the culture, try amazing food, and be able to communicate with others. There is more amazing information in this article on why it is beneficial to learn Spanish and all the social benefits that it brings.

Especially for economic reasons, this article talks about how being bilingual can be very beneficial if you own a business. For example, it can make your customer service so much better because when you own a business you will interact with all kinds of people. Some of them might not be bilingual and if you are not able to communicate with them there is a chance they will leave. This situation can affect you and your business. Learning Spanish will not only make you look smarter but it will also help your business grow. If you are thinking about starting a business and learning a new language this article is for you.

I chose this for my social reasoning as it provides a lot of great insights and points as to why it can be important to study Spanish. One key point I would lake to take from this is that like the article states it is a great way to make friends and I know this from first hand experience as learning Spanish has allowed me to build connections with a lot of great people that I would have never encountered had I decided to not learn Spanish. Another great reasoning that I agree with is the ability to enjoy the Latin culture through its music and shows. There are so many artist that I have got to listen to and understand thanks to learning the language, people like Vicente Fernandez or shows like Chavo Del Ocho.
