9/11 Hero Jay Jones saves woman who has fallen and is unable to move. (Aryan Srinivasan)

Captain Jay Jones was a firefighter who led 5 men into the World Trade Center on a rescue mission as it collapsed. Jay was put in a dangerous situation not knowing if he would come out alive, and chose to help out a woman who had fallen and was unable to get up. As 106 floors were falling above him he decided to save the woman. He carried her until he got her to safety. He says that without her, they might have not made it, he took the chance and saved the woman while getting out safely himself with his men. He risked his own life and was a big hero, one life may not seem like much, but if I was the person, I would be extremely grateful. He later on gave a speech about his story as you see on the picture. Not only did captain Jay Jones save lives, but he was a true hero.

The Falling Man is a very famous photo from the event of 9/11. A guy named Richard Drew had started taking pictures of the tragedy and had got a clip of this. The picture is a guy falling to his death after jumping from the World Trade Center. There were around 200 people who had jumped to their death from the towers. What was different about this picture is that the man who jumped lined up with the building and and he appeared as if he was calm unlike the other people who had jumped. This picture made it to many newspapers and news channels and it showed another side of the 9/11 attack and not just the many people who died in the plane.

2 men that survived the 9/11 attacks is Brian Clark, a Canadian business man and Stanley Praimnath, who’s life was saved by Clark. Brian Clark’s office was struck on the 84th floor in the South tower at 9:03am. There were 3 staircases, and by chance the stairway he went on was the only one that was not destroyed. As a woman stopped him and told him to go upstairs he heard a banging noise of a buried man screaming for help. He immediately headed toward the voice and found the man who was Stanley Praimnath, a Fuji Bank employee who was alive because his desk shielded him. They finally got himself out after a few tries. “I said, ‘Uh, I’m Brian.’ He said, ‘I’m Stanley! We’ll be brothers for life!’” They headed back down the staircase. They ended up being only 2 out of 4 survivors where Flight 175 crashed. Today, they are still alive.

Daniel Lewin is known as the first victim of the 9/11 attacks. He was aboard flight 93, which was hijacked and intended to hit either the White House or the Capitol Building. Lewin was an American-Israeli entrepreneur who formerly served for the Special Forces in Israel. This job experience made him fluent in the language that the hijackers were speaking. Once he heard what they were saying and what their plans were, he most likely confronted 2 of the “soon-to-be” hijackers without realizing that the third was sitting right behind him. He was then stabbed by the third hijacker behind him, Satam al-Suqami, being the first victim of the horrendous attacks of 9/11. He tried his best to contact as many officials and alert as many people on the plane as possible before the terrorists unfortunately slashed his throat, killing him instantly. Lewin was survived by his wife and two sons back home in Denver, Colorado.

“The Falling Man” is a photograph taken by Richard Drew on the day of the 9/11 attacks. It shows a man falling from the top floors of the North Tower of the Twin Towers in New York City. Later, his name was found out to be Jonathan Briley, a sound engineer. This was most likely to escape the fire and smoke of the towers. The day after the attacks, the photograph was published on international media. There was a lot of controversy about the purpose of the photograph. At first, many people thought it was sad and cold since a man was falling to his death. But over time, it was recognized as a significant photograph and a “touching work of art”.

When Benjamin saw the first plane hit the north tower, he started telling people to run downstairs and instead of fleeing himself he helped everyone around him. There where stories of him and three others helping a woman in a wheelchair. Many of his friends call him kind and compassionate. </var>

Him and five of his firefighters were searching through the North Tower for people who were stuck, after the South Tower collapsed. Him and his team found a 59 year old woman named Josephine Harris, a bookkeeper who fell and couldn’t keep going. The team stopped to help her get to safety. Then, the North Tower collapsed around them, but they were not hit. If the woman wasn’t there for them to save, they would’ve all been killed.

The Harvey, a FDNY fireboat named for a captain killed while battling a ship fire during the 1930s. Launched a year later, the Harvey was the fastest, most powerful fireboat in the world. The Harvey fireboat was called out to some of the biggest waterfront disasters, such as massive pier blazes to the 1942 fires which would have needed another city fireboat if not for the Harvey’s very quick response time. This boat was finally retired in 1994 after serving. Although, the Harvey wasn’t done serving yet. This 70-year-old vessel had responded to its biggest callout when the terrorists flew the hijacked planes into the twin towers. Three citizens Huntley Gill, Tim Ivory and Jessica DuLong would be aboard the John J. Harvey responding to the destruction of these attacks.

Suddenly there was a man with a red bandana covering his mouse and nose appeared, he spoke in a calm voice and led the people to the building lobby. The man in the red bandana then went another three times saving as many people as he can until the building burned down. A couple months later his remains were found with firefighters and everyone wondered who he was. Guzman McMilan and her coworkers took the staircase down after the first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center. After they reached the 13th floor, the tower collapsed on them. Guzman McMillan survived after being rescued after spending 27 hours trapped under the rubble. Her right leg was crushed, her head was swollen, and her face was burned. She was hospitalized for over a month, and her leg almost had to be amputated. However, after a fourth surgery doctors decided they did not need to amputate her leg. He said he started to feel the building shake and thought it was an earthquake at the meeting, but he heard everybody leaving the room running and screaming so he was a bit confused. He started to run down the staircase and saw fire fighters running up the stairs to deal with the fire. Once he exited the north tower it collapsed behind him. He and his coworker managed to outrun the smoke cloud from it. They got to his co worker’s brothers house and David managed to to get a rental car and drove back to his family in North Carolina.

Rick Rescorla saved almost 2,700 people during the attack of 9/11. He was the head of security in the South Tower. Before the attack, he fought for more safety measures at work after a terrorist bombing in the North Tower’s basement in 1993. He felt like there would be another attack at the World Trade Center. He was on the 44th floor in the South Tower when the plane hit. All of his coworkers knew exactly how to escape because of Rescorla. He taught them that you have to get to the elevator, don’t get to the stairwell, go down the stairwell, not up the stairwell and get away from the building. He was told to stay in place, but instead told people to follow him to evacuate. They made it about five blocks away from the building before he went back in to help anyone left. That was the last time anyone saw him alive. He was able to call his wife before he went back in.

As flight 77 flew into the Pentagon, he was walking away from LTGEN Maude’s office, very close to where the plane made impact. instantaneously, he started grabbing people by the necks and running them down the hall past his office that had a door leading outside of the pentagon. The then colonel recalls that he could see nothing as he took a woman onto his back and carried her out a window.

Welles Crowther was a hero who was able to save many lives of people stuck in the World Trade Center’s South Tower. A group of people on the 78th floor sky lobby were all grouped together, unsure about what to do. Survivors described a man wearing a red bandana calmly helping them to safety. He saved as many people as he could until the building finally collapsed. He made a total of three trips and those survivors described a man wearing a red bandana who saved them. Soon, Alison Crowther realized this was none others than her son who carried a red handkerchief. He worked as a volunteer firefighter and also as an equities trader. His actions demonstrate bravery and strength which will forever be remembered.

A Port Authority police officer who lived in Manasquan, N.J., he rushed to the World Trade Center to help with rescues. He was 40 when he died in the south tower. Angelica and A.J. say the hero narrative wrapped around the story of the 9/11 first responders can overwhelm their intimate, personal loss. As A.J. puts it, it can be hard to cut through their dad's "larger-than-lifeness." And, he says, it's hard for him to stomach the ways 9/11 has become politicized: used as fodder for both patriotism and retribution. When he was 14, A.J. flew with his mom to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to observe a pre-trial hearing for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and other defendants who are charged with orchestrating the 9/11 attacks. "There's never going to be a version of me that doesn't hate the people that did that," he says.
https://papba.org/fallen-officers/police-officer-alfonse-j-niedermeyer-iii/

Brian Clark is one of the only 18 people in the South Tower to escape from the floor above where the plane struck. Not only escaping alone, he took a man with him who is Stanley Praimnath who was trapped under debris. Clark was able to carry him down to safety which was a very tough journey knowing he was above where the plane hit. When remembering 911 we should all think about the heroes that sacrificed and risked everything for saving people. First responders, people like Clark, and people who are there for families of lost ones are the true heroes.

Orlo Palmer was a Battalion Chief of the New York City Fire Department who sacrificed his life to save trapped civilians with his team of firefighters. He and his team arrived on the 78th floor of the south tower, where the plane collided with the building. He had 3 children, and knew that going into the towers could mean he would never see his kids again, but willingly did it anyway because it was his job to keep others safe. Palmer and his team of firefighters acknowledged the decomposing of the tower, but stayed in to try and save as many lives as possible. At 9:59 AM, while Orlo Palmer was radioing to others that he needed assistance on the 79th floor, the building collapsed, killing everyone inside, including Palmer and his team. Palmer’s sacrifice was not forgotten, as the FDNY’s physical fitness award was renamed after him.

The United States was still in shambles from the attacks and Americans were scared and did not feel safe. The president walked out on to the field and waved to all the fans, Once he got to the mound, gave all the fans a thumbs up, letting them know that they were safe. He put his hand down and threw a perfect strike right down the middle. The fans went crazy and it was a true patriotic moment after the 9/11 attacks.
