According to Sudo (2012), there is a lot of controversy surrounding the word hero. The article states that the qualities to identify as a hero have drastically changed over time. For example, the status of heroes was allocated only to divine and mystical creatures such as demi-gods. However, in recent times artists and influencers are categorized as heroes, particularly in the U.S. Furthermore, activists Nelson Mandela and MLK claimed that courage and altruism are necessary to identify as a hero, i.e. firefighters and doctors. It is true that being courageous and selfless are true qualities of a hero. However, the idealogy of idols being classified as heroes is questionable.

This article explains various aspects revolving around how heroism evolved from the past to the present. Furthermore, it shows that history can cast cultural values, the lack of inclusivity of heroes in the past, and the misrecognition of acts of heroism. Both ideas about the absence of equality in the representation of heroes and not acknowledging brave gestures are valid.

According to Sudo (2012), the term ‘hero’ is universal and has changed meaning through the years. The article discussed how heroes were first a product of fiction to teach children the values of bravery, allegiance, and valour, whereas today, they are real people who risk their lives to protect others; however, people nowadays use the word ‘hero’ interchangeably with ‘celebrities’ and icons. The author also stated how U.S. history books are focused specifically on white males, totally disregarding the heroic acts of women and other races. Heroes being universally recognised as people that are interested in the goodwill of others is a valid point; however, famous people and stars being regarded as ones by the majority of the populace is debatable.
