“He who does not love his own language is worse than an animal and a smelly fish” a famous quote said by Dr. Jose Rizal. It only means that we, Filipinos should preserve our own nationalism and our dignity. In the recent news, Commission on Higher Education or CHED has just decided to remove the Filipino subject in college as part of the new general education curriculum as said in the Memorandum Order No. 20, Series of 2013. This news caused a debate on whether this subject still needs to be taught in college or not. 

CHED’s secretary Sonny Coloma said that the decision to remove Filipino subject came about because of a need to rationalize the curriculum following the implementation of the new program K-12. This way, he said that college students can focus more on interdisciplinary courses or the “professional” courses that students really needed. Filipino subject must retain as a subject in college because it preserves our nationalism. A lot of people, especially in this generation cannot even use the Filipino language properly. Most cannot even differentiate the use of “Ng” and “Nang” and it saddens me to think that they will actually remove it. CHED also argued that Filipino has been taught since elementary and now, six years in high school so that should be enough but that is not really the issue because Filipino subject in college is more than just what they taught students in elementary. It’s a continuation and expansion of students learning. 

Another reason why it is not wise and just to remove the Filipino subject in college is the fact that about 10,000 teachers will lose their jobs. 

 

There is no alternative to fostering and preserving nationalism other than teaching it to students. Filipino should still be taught even in college.
