The book is 40 pages long and is intended for 4th Grade. In a quick summary, this book is a picture book about a boy who has a stutter. He has a hard time with words that start with the C, P, and M sounds. The Author creates a comparison between the river crashing and how the boy speaks. This book is complex for some readers because of the words used to describe the boy or the river. Students also may struggle with what stuttering is, they may have little to no experience with it. 

I Talk Like a River, by Jordan Scott and Sydney Smith, can be used in the classroom to better students skill-based and knowledge based tasks. For example, when working on different forms of figurative language, students can identify metaphors, similes, personification, and etc. Another example, is this book can be useful in reading. Having the students either read the text and retell it or having them read-aloud in a small group setting. With the retelling it could be done in writing or it can be done to the teacher in a small group setting. This book is helpful to introduce and bring awareness to the uniqueness of those with a stutter. She includes what they need to know about earth, such as, activities, differences, where we live, etc. This book can be complex for the way it is structured and possible words students may not know. 

If You Come To Earth, by Sophie Blackall, can be used as a great learning tool in writing. After reading the book as a group the teacher can go through a shared writing process. As a whole, the students and teacher, will construct a letter to the people in space. Then at their own desk, students can write a letter individually about Earth. A Story About Afiya, by James Berry, can be used to help build students knowledge-based and skill-based task. The story introduces a comparison in culture the some students don’t recognize right away. The lesson that the students can take away from the book is being content and happy with what you have no matter how much it is. You Matter By Christian Robinson was published in 2020. This book is intended for grades 1st-3rd. In short summary, this book is constructed to teach students that they matter regardless of their circumstances, and regardless of what may be going on around them. The book goes through the smallest objects to humans, including that everyone matters. This book can be complex for younger grades in the wording that is being used. 

You Matter, by Christian Robinson, can be used in the classroom to build knowledge-based and skills-based tasks. Not only does this work on the skills in school but it helps work on social skills. Teachers can use shared reading, such as echo reading. This will be useful students making them retaining the words to repeat it back to the teacher. The students can have discussions with their peers throughout the different pages within this picture book. This book consist of the Alphabet with correlating exciting pictures. The only way this book could be complex for students is pronouncing the words that start with the specific letter. The book is a great tool for learning the ABC’s with the providing pictures to help students understand the order of the Alphabet. 

Learning With Llama Llama, by Anna Dewdeny, is a book that provides the ideas of the Alphabet. While learning the order, students can begin to understand the sounds that go with each letter. For a fun activity that builds knowledge-based and skill-based tasks, students can put together a t-chart or sticky note chart of possible words that start with the letter and sound it makes. Published in 2022, Grumpy Monkey Are We There Yet? By Suzanne Lang, is a funny story about Jim Panzee. In the story, he becomes conflicted with patience. Jim realizes that some things are worth waiting for. This book is perfect for 1st Grade, mainly because the students can relate to it. What makes this book complex for 1st graders is the words used. They may struggle with pronouncing the words. 

Grumpy Monkey Are We There Yet?, By Suzanne Lang, helps build on knowledge-based and skill-based tasks. Students can use this text in shared reading and writing. Teacher reading the text to the students and thinking out loud, to demonstrate thinking during reading, and then sending students to do a writing assignment. Possible idea is having students write about a time when they where impatient or what it means to be patient. Students can also do writing with this, for instance, they could write about their own hair and using descriptive words to give a image of what their hair looks like. This book can be used in shared reading, selecting key components as the teacher reads out loud and asking multiple questions. Students can also use writing by doing the activity provided in the book, describe your family. In shared reading students can ask previous questions that they may have about the book and then slowly answer them as they read with the teacher. Students can even be creative by drawing their own idea of what a ponds ecosystem looks like. The teacher could even have the shared reading done outside, possibly with echo reading to make sure the students are paying attention. The teacher could point out to different things they see outside and have them write it down. Students can also do a activity by putting in order of where the acorn went.
