I wrote this in this font because the idea of 自在is all about free flowing, worry free , and carefree. Im using this writing style to express my inner desire towards freedom, because in the end, total freedom is equal to total happiness in my heart.

this character means to let go. this character brings me peace because it was really calming to write out. i added the wind stars and clouds because all those things are peaceful. i also think of wind as deep breaths which helps to let things go.

I was hoping to depict the wishes/want for comfort. The person below is thinking and praying for it, hoping to gain some sense of self peace. I feel that a sky blue is a good colour to depict comfort and tranquility, and the easy-going nature of the single brushstroke to paint both characters represents relaxation to me.

I wanted to show the free flowing nature in this work of art. All the strokes are supposed to feel as if they are flowing together like water. This symbolizes the comfort and relaxation I felt while working on it. The ink splatters show the easy I feel throwing ink at the paper.

I chose this more rounded design because I feel that it represents calmness and letting go of the strict and sharp lines. I also outlined the characters in dark blue but it is hard to tell in the picture. I added blue because to me it is a calming color.

I wrote the Chinese character 放下 (fàngxià), which means 'to let go.' To reflect the meaning of the characters and the style, I chose to write them in a flowing script. I drew a bird above it because a bird is related to the character's meaning.

I wrote the character that means to be comfortable/at ease. I did feel really comfortably writing the character. I simply just let the creative process flow and I really enjoyed being concise with it. I drew an eye underneath the characters because it makes me feel comfortable knowing there’s people watching over me helping me succeed. There’s so many wonderful people I know that root me on and it makes me feel so comfortable. This is my favorite piece that I have done so far for this class!

Calligraphy of 自在 flows with a natural, unrestrained elegance, capturing the essence of freedom and ease. The strokes, expressive and spontaneous, mirror the carefree life of the panda, a symbol of tranquility amidst nature. The bamboo stands tall, representing resilience and calm, harmonizing with the panda’s relaxed demeanor. Together, they embody the spirit of 自在—being at peace with oneself.

This artwork means to let go. I have a hard time letting go of things that hold me back, and while trying to think of what to paint next to my character I had to think about what I did as a kid to feel at peace if I had any big emotions. I used to climb the tree in my front yard to relax and I would sit there and watch the cars go by. That is why I painted a tree. I turn to nature often to let go of my thoughts. While writing this character I felt focused and calm but also a little stressed to get it right the first time.

“Let go; find inner peace.” I chose this piece to recreate because of the choppy yet elegant style and for the simple meaning. This piece was surprisingly very difficult to recreate since it uses mainly the cursive style characters. I represented the phrase “let go” with a blown dandelion. For the word “find” I used a blue line to show wind and air. Finally I transitioned the blue wind stroke into a water fall to symbolize inner peace and calm/clarity. I think we all can learn from the phrase “Let go.” Thank you

I chose to put scenes that I immediately think of when told to let things go and be at peace. I chose a sunset scene and an ocean scene with footprints on a beach. This was a nice project to do to really take the time to complete and focus on what you wanted to make.
