Great Gatsby Modern Soundtrack

Music is used throughout The Great Gatsby as a subtle way to expand scenes beyond what is explicitly said or described. It allows the reader to form a greater picture in their minds of the story playing out that includes sound. The songs used appear to be deliberately selected by the author for their lyrical significance to the scene they are embedded into. Using real-life songs in a fictional story also brings a sense of realism to the book, and allows the readers to relate better to the text, as the characters in the story hear the same songs that the reader might hear on a radio or played on their own record players. Although modern readers of The Great Gatsby would need to be incredibly familiar with the music of the 1920s to immediately recognize the music, once the average reader does their research and learns about the songs, they too can be transported to the era of Jay Gatsby and his roaring parties.

After all, in the very casualness of Gatsby's party there were romantic possibilities totally absent from her world. " (Fitzgerald, 108)

This song is played at one of Gatsby's iconic parties, immediately after Daisy leaves. This seems to be a reflection on the romantic tension between the two. It is an appropriate song to play for a party at the time, especially as it is winding down.

Incidentally, the official music video for "Thinking Out Loud" features a couple dancing intimately. The romantic lyrics also fit very well into the theme of the party scene from The Great Gatsby where "Three O'Clock in the Morning" was used.

The use of the word "creep" has a distinctly negative connotation, especially when used in the context of creeping into a sleeping woman's tent whose "love belongs to" the Sheik.

Both songs strongly suggest some form of non-consensual sexual actions are taking place, and the explicit music video for "Blurred Lines" featuring nude women takes another step in this deeply concerning direction. Both songs are performed in a slightly upbeat, yet reserved fashion without many changes in tempo, contrasting the inherently erratic nature of the explicit actions being described.
