A Hero's Journey by Andrea Castillo

A "Call to Adventure" is the start of a hero's journey in which they are told that they have to undergo a series of tasks and challenges, usually, for the better of others. Typically, the hero initially denies the journey, but soon they come to the realization that they must go on this journey.

I personally experienced a small "call to adventure" for the beginning of my high school career. The start of my freshman year was a couple weeks before everyone else's. The first day of freshman Band Camp had arrived. I had a bittersweet feeling inside because of all the worries, nervousness and excitement I had inside. Even though there was a part of me that didn't want to wake up early and go to school in the "middle" of my summer. Luckily, the other part of me was more convincing and had me arrive at school in the beginning of August.

"Supernatural" Aid

A "Supernatural" aid is someone whom the hero is not familiar to, come and helps guide them in to the right path, in order for them to begin their journey.

I had "Supernatural" help from the different mentors and upperclassmen who have already been a part of the program for over a year. They helped me master marching skills and know the basics to all that is Marching Band and high school.

Threshold Guardian

A "Threshold Guardian" is a barrier in which the hero must cross in order to begin their quest in a "new" or distinct world.

Band Camp, in itself, was a "threshold Guardian" for me. Band Camp was an amazing experience, but came with many struggles. The heat of the middle of the day was a pain and the constant sweat and need for water was annoying. After finishing the beginning of which would be my freshman year, I knew that this school year would be a struggle during first semester, but I would important life lessons like time management and orginazation.

The "Challenges" in which the hero undergoes are the one's that help mold them into a new person with a new and better character.

I have had a lot of challenges throughout my first semester in high school. For example, I've had to learn how to manage my time wisely and how to be organized with my studies and my work. Also, I've had to overcome and study harder for tedious test my teacher gave me and have valuable knowledge for my future.

Westley desires to get married with Buttercup, but dosn't have the money to do so. Therefore, he leaves on a ship to go look for his fortune over seas.

"Supernatural" Help

Westley didn't have any "supernatural" help for his journey. He is very self suffiecient and independent through out the film.

Westley had to defeat Fzzini, Inigo and Fezzik before he is able to protect and reach the princess. He has to battle Inigo in fencing, defeat Fezzik, the giant, with his strength and out smart Fizzini with the poisonous wine. This then leads to the series of challenges and temptations he reaches once he enters the Fire Swamp.

Westley faces a series of challenges once he enters the Fire Swamp. The Fire Swamp, in itself, has three main terrors: the flame spurts, the lightning sand, and the R.O.U.S.'s. Afterwards, they are caught by Prince Humperdink and his men and Westley is taken into the Pit of Despair, where he reaches the abyss part of his "Hero's Journey."
