More specifically I believe that the house they have come to will be one of the people the Giver has told him about like the girl he used to teach or the kid that fell into the river. For example “ behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.” ( Lois Lowry 225 ). Although others might disagree that he is only having a memory of a house and music, I want to maintain that this is actually happening and he has hope that it is to I feel that if this was a memory the story would not end as well. Therefore I conclude that Jonas and Gabe have found a good luck stopping point at the house.

Lowry show that when Jonas and Gabe finally make it down the hill on the sled, Jonas hears singing and joy and the people were waiting for them. Although others may disagree that Jonas and Gabe actually made it, and that Jonas is just hallucinating. I think that they did make it because they went all that way just to get to elsewhere, and Lowry was very descriptive of elsewhere and how they saw all the joy and lights. Therefore I conclude that Jonas and Gabe DID make it because Lowry also states that the people were singing and waiting for them.

More specifically, I believe that Gabe will be just as successful as Jonas has been. Gabriel became quiet.¨ (Lowry 147) Lowry shows that Gabe is receiving a memory. When you receive a memory, it makes you more aware of the world that used to be. What was normal for your ancestors and the others before them. Although other might disagree that Gabe would be successful, I believe that since so early on in his life he broke a major rule, he will never know of the society that so valued propriety over knowledge. I maintain that when someone believe that Gabe will not be successful, they would be wrong,  for a few main reasons. First, Gabe would be raised by none other than Jonas, the receiver that changed the ways of the oh so monitored society in which he used to live. Jonas changed the ways of sameness in his society. Therefore, I conclude that Jonas and Gabe will both continue to be remarkable in their new society because Jonas, living with Lily for so long will tell the tales of his restricted, oblivious society to his new society. They will learn of their long and treacherous journey, and will most likely consider him very brave. I think this because it’s Christmas and I know I would help a 13 year old boy and a baby get food if they needed some.  More specifically I believe that Jonas isn’t hallucinating and that there are people at the bottom of the hill waiting for Jonas and Gabe.  
 
They decide to live in the Elsewhere because there are people in the town who will accept them: “He was in a room filled with people, and it was warm, with firelight glowing on a hearth.  He could see through a window that outside it was night, and snowing.  There were colored lights: red and green and yellow, twinkling from a tree which was, oddly, inside a room.” (Lowry 154)
 
Lowry shows that there is Christmas.  At the end of the book she seems to describe a town where Christmas is and from his memory all he knows about is how happy Christmas is.  Although some people may disagree with me and say that Christmas can have very greedy people, Christmas is a time of joy and I’m sure that they will help Jonas and Gabe.  
 
Therefore I conclude that, Jonas and Gabe will be let in a house because it’s Christmas and no one should be un happy.

I think this represents traveling through time and dimension to get to Elsewhere. For example, “.... they sped in a straight line through an incision that seemed to lead to the final destination, the place that he had always felt was waiting, the Elsewhere that held their future and their past.” (Lowry 179). Here Lowry shows that they are entering a different place and time, holding what is before them and what is behind them. Although others might disagree that this represents Jonas and Gabe dying, I maintain that this in fact represents them entering the new community. At one point, yes it does seems they lose consciousness, but they don’t die, and I predict when they wake up, they will be in another dimension. In my view, I believe that Jonas and Gabe have finally made it! More specifically, they are not hallucinating and seeing a mirage, but have reached Elsewhere, and will acquire new adventures. For example, “As they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once, he could see lights.” Lowry shows that Jonas has reached the house from his memory, and the sled as well, as we recall from earlier in the book. Although others may disagree that Jonas may just be having a mirage from hunger and thirst and is not actually seeing the house with the lights, I maintain that Jonas has told us about feeling close to Elsewhere and that he was near, where having a mirage may just make you see things, not feel or think. Therefore, I conclude that Jonas and Gabe are there, they just haven’t gone forth yet into the new area.

More specifically, I believe that the snow, family, love, music, etc. is part of the world beyond the perfect community that they lived in. For example, “He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love.” Lowry shows that the families here love each other, that they remember their lives and accomplishment. Such families don’t exist in Jonas’s community. Although others might disagree that Jonas and Gabriel are simply hallucinating, I maintain that the feelings he experiences on arrival to Elsewhere are true and real. Therefore, I conclude that Jonas and Gabe arrived to Elsewhere because the community they arrived seemed real like in the memories.

If I were to complete the story this is what it would be like. Jonas is found unconscious with a sled with a weak and shivering baby in is shirt when he wakes up he is in a family's house surrounded by children parents and grandparents. He grows up with single father with no children and learns what real love is like. Its is just an idea though.

The ending to the giver is strange, it seems so out of place compared to the rest of the book, i find it hard to believe that they found a random sled and went to a happy little town

Simple, the ending  N E V E R  happened, it was all a cold/hunger hallucination,
I believe that when they reached the top of the hill, Jonas collapsed and hypothermia kicked in, his mind created the best possible ending before he and Gabe froze to death

I believe what happened at the end is that Jonas and Gabe saw a sled that a child left and got on it. They also hear distant singing and music from a village beyond the hill but Jonas and Gabe can see it. For example, when Jonas said,  “it was a only an echo.” (Lowry pg 225) That means it was in the distant but not too far away. Jonas and Gabe did not die nor went to heaven. The Elsewhere must be our world and beyond the border of the community. And that is my final thought about what really happens in the end.

Sure, it’s quite a coincidence that the sled was just there, and that the music is angels singing, but for Lois Lowry to make this book all about Jonas and Gabe escaping to Elsewhere but then failing right when they were super close is kind of dumb (no offense). Plus, the book says that: the wind whipped at his face: “(Lois Lowry page 224)”. She says it whipped his face, which sounds like it hurts, and I don’t think heaven would hurt. Also, that’s just depressing if a baby and a kid die because they escaped a “perfect” community in which the baby would have died if they didn’t. Although you all may not agree with me, I don’t think Lois Lowry is that dark and would make such a good book have a horribly sad ending. Therefore, I think Jonas and Gabriel are ok, but definitely shaken by the experience.

In my opinion, I believe that Jonas and Gabe passed away during their trudering journey up the hill. I think this because when Jonas gets to the top of the hill he says: “I remember this place, Gabe”(Lowry 223). This shows that he has gone up to heaven because he said it wasn't a memory that The Giver gave him, it was one of his own. But he couldn't of just been in the same place that memory was made, I think that he is in his heaven and he is in the place he loves, which is what he has never known, but what he has experienced before through his memories. Jonas believed that this was the exact hill and sled and place his first given memory had been, but I believe that it's him passing away with Gabe. Jonas also states that he could still hear the echo from his own community, but I think this is all the memories being released out of him when he passed. In conclusion I believe that Jonas and Gabe passed away on the hill, and it was not just a coincidence that there was a sled at the top of the hill.

                In my view, I believe that Jonas and Gabe died, because he was remembering all the happy things in his life and in death stories people tend to remember all the happy things in their lives. More specifically, Jonas and Gabe were also freezing and starving and Jonas was hurt so that is three ways that they could have died if they did. There is an example of this in the book, when Lowry writes, “It became a struggle to ride the bike as Jonas weakened from lack of food, and realized at the same time that he was encountering something he had for a long time yearned to see: hills. His sprained ankle throbbed as he forced the pedal downward in an effort that was almost beyond him¨(Lowry 218) Another reason might be is that when Jonas and Gabe are riding down the hill and Jonas claims he sees lights and usually in dramatic books and movies before characters die they say I can see the light or something like that. Therefore, I conclude that Jonas and Gabe will probably die due to the reasons I have stated.

The reason I think this is because he never falls and doesn’t get back up again. Although it may be odd for a sled to be left out the way it was, since it's christmas time most people go sledding and many times leave the sleds out side by accident. In the book Jonas and Gabe go through many hard spots. All the sudden they come to a sled already there and it’s just like his memory. Jonas also has this sudden burst of happiness where he remembers all of his family and friends. This feeling was so out of the blue. But, I also wonder if this was because he entered the real world, where most people have emotions and feeling. What if the city had limits, and once you left them you acquired feeling? What if it’s like water, you can’t breath until you swim up for air or exit it. Jonas and Gabe do not get to elsewhere because he is so weak and near to death that he is most likely imagining that he saw lights and heard singing. He couldn’t even know what music was because the giver never gave him that memory. Lowrey writes, “ Music,” the giver said, smiling. “ I Began to hear something truly remarkable, and it is called music. I’ll give you some before I go.” No, Giver.” I want you to keep it, to have with you, when I’m gone” ( Lois Lowry page 197).This means that Jonas himself thinks he knows what music is but he doesn’t. This means that he is clearly hallucinating. You might think that Jonas lives because you just want him to live but there is no real evidence in this book that he lives. Therefore I think that Jonas will eventually  die even though I want him and gabriel to live I have to face the fact and the most probable answer.

They would believe in love and what they called the “Old” ways. They would build a sustainable community and help other receivers and givers escape.

Jonas and Gabe made it very close to the community. After he made it down the hill he falls off the sled landing on his chest which is where the child is, they both die. Lowry says ¨Behind him, across the vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only and echo¨ (Lowry 225). There are woods in between Jonas and the new community. That is why he hears the sound of music and lights but only hears and sees them as a mere echo. After he dies the storm will cover Gabe and him up. In many years the community will find the two bodies, and they will go find the community where they came from. Jonas’s community will be lost without him the Giver will have died. This new community will help the other strive to greatness. Sameness will be eliminated and Jonas. THe community will understand love, the true way to live, and why release is horrible and cruel, and inhumane. Gabe and Jonas will be heroes forever.

I think this because Jonas thinks this in the book. “He forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now” (Lowrey 225) How could Jonas recognize something he had never personally seen before.Unless he had see it in one of his memories of the past. In the past they had towns and cities and all these things he is seeing. Some people might think he and Gabriel die because of the ending sentence, ”Behind him, across vast distance of space and time, from the place he had left,  he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo” (Lowrey 225). But disagree because Jonas is only hoping that his friends and family are safe.

They get off the sled after they reached the place with “red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love:”(Lowry 225). They find it because Jonas “felt that Elsewhere was not far away:” (Lowry 219). They walk into the town where they are greeted by the mayor who takes them into a warm home and gives them hot chocolate and donuts and warm clothes and blankets. They sleep there overnight, then in the morning, a kind couple comes and adopts them and loves them as their own. Then, Jonas and Gabe have their first Christmas. The couple has a baby, and they name her Lily Fiona Rosemary. When Gabe grows up, he travels to the community that he once lived in to tell them what happened. He explains what feelings are, and then the community decides to join with the other community, and they experience feelings and love too. Although other people think that Jonas and Gabe die, they have come to far to just give up. He shows this in The Giver where it says, “But he had come too far. He must try to go on:” (Lowry 221). Jonas is too determined to give up when the community is so close. Earlier in the book Jonas says that he feels hope, and I believe that the hope is finding a new city, with new people, and new ideas. “Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and they were waiting, too, for the baby.” (Lowry 225) The Giver states that when Jonas opened his eyes, he saw lights through the windows of rooms. He also heard people singing. He is seeing love in many different ways. “Families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love.” (Lowry 225) In conclusion, Jonas and Gabe have had a very long journey, and they both deserve a happy ending. Jonas thinks it is another community, and then realizes it is elsewhere. He and Gabe trudge to the front door, and knock on the door. A person in brightly colored clothes opens the door, and Jonas is awestruck, but so tired. The person gasps, and rushes Jonas in. The rest of the family crowds around Jonas and Gabe, and stare. The mother rushes Jonas and Gabe to the bathroom for a hot bath. Jonas starts getting his senses back, and nudges Gabe. He is very confused, but happy and glad that he was able to protect Gabe. The father walks in with towels, and Jonas dries off, while the father dries Gabe off. They are taken too a warm bed, and fall right asleep. Jonas wakes up in the morning, and expects a snowy freezing landscape. Then the memories come flooding back, and he looks at Gabe who is sound asleep. Jonas climbs out of the bed, and sees a clean pair of clothes laid out. He slips them on and walks quietly out of the room. He walks downstairs and sees a family cooking pancakes, and they look up at him, smiling. He recognizes love. I think that they go to Elsewhere because in the book when they are “released” they go to else where, I believe that's where Jonas and Gabe go, but else where is the united states and they have lives just like us, but when Jonas dies again he goes back to his community he has memory of his life in the united states and he changes everyone's life in the community to make it a safer version of the united states. And Gabe also goes on this adventure with Jonas (meaning he dies they goes to the united states but then dies again and goes back to the community) and he is Jonas best friend in his different lives. A prediction is that there are families there and a small neighborhood. A quote that supports my reasoning is “He knew they were shining through the window of rooms, that they were the red, blue and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where families made and kept memories, where they celebrated love” (Lowery 225). I also think that they are at the place where the giver shared his first memory about snow and the sled because of this quote “He settled himself on the sled and hugged Gabe close. I think that Gabe and Jonas make it to the new community where there is peace and happiness More specifically, Jonas and Gabe make it safely down the hill on the sled to their new community where there are no rules unlike Jonas’s former community. For example, He forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now. He knew they were shining through the window of rooms, that they were red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from the trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love. “(Lowry 225). Lowry shows that Jonas and gabe see lights of a community ahead that are celebrating love unlike his former community in which they would not celebrate love. Although others might disagree that this is when Jonas may be dieing because he is hoping so much that he finds this community that he gets so cold and dies.

In my view Jonas and Gabe don’t make it to elsewhere. Because  as the sled goes down the steep hill the book states Jonas could feel himself losing consciousness. As the sled makes it’s way to the bottom of the hill Lowry quotes “He forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now.” (Lowry 225) shows that Jonas is seeing lights, which is often a sign of being close to death. I think he is just having his life flash before his eyes as he remembers everything the Giver taught him before he eventually dies in the snow.

After slept for two days, Jonas wakes up with the feeling of a hole in is torso, but it is just no food in his stomach. He finds himself in a bed with blankets piled on top of him. With food that could feed him for what he thought could be months. At first it was a just was seemed to be a dream, him in a bed cozy with food all around him, but then he realized that he did not have Gabe! He sat up and tried to get out of bed, but he was weakened from the lack of food he had for however many days he did not know. So he ate the extraordinary food so filling and remarkably good. Then got out of bed mad as a bull that someone had taken Gabe and set off to find him. He got out of this odd, weirdly room with books, three doors, and a black screen. He recalled from a memory that the Giver had given him about this screen thing that showed people acting. He did not bother to try and turn it on because something more important had happened that he must fix. So he tried all the doors. On led to a tiny room of clothes, a closet. On led to a medium sized room with a toilet and sink, a bathroom. On led outside of the room. He grabbed some food and kid it in his makeshift bag. He went outside of the room and found three people waiting outside his room. He tried to communicate with them but they were asleep. So he tapped the strange people and demanded to know where Gabe was. They did not know who that was, for they had named him themselves, Spencer. Jonas already hated that name. He used the name only for them to understand and show him where he was. They showed him where he was and he rejoiced of happiness. He took him and they greatly appreciated there act of kindness and set off on an adventure once again. 
 
I thought that they got to a house because in the book it said: “He forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now.” (Lowery 225)
