In order to be autonomous, our students have to learn self-discipline first. They have to be goal oriented and have to be able to self-assess their progress. Most of all they have to be aware of the importance of education and of learning.
With my younger students, I work mostly on gaining self-discipline first. Many of them show a lack of maturity as far as the importance of learning is and so I really work on gaining working habits, following directions/instructions, executing tasks, and on asking for help.
With my older students, I mostly work on projects and problem-solving. As they already have achieved a higher degree of self-discipline, they are able to give quality input and critical thinking.

It seems that I have been practising independent learning skills for some time with my students, providing them the opportunity to:
- choose their own seats, and also arrange desks according to their wish and needs / choose whether, on certain days, we do the lesson in the classroom or in the school's garden;
- choose between the type of evaluation they prefer: homework, project, test, etc.
- choose their task and their team when developing collaborative project-based activities;
- choose between tasks, both in homework and during evaluations;

Increasing autonomy is not an immediate process and it may be difficult for some students. Students should take the first steps towards agency in the classroom or face-to-face classes, where the teacher’s support is possible on the spot, and gradually increase their level of decision and autonomy.

Students need to know what is expected of them (by means of a rubric, for example), where they can find information (the teacher may suggest some trusty sources of information and websites), how to select important information, have the opportunity to show what they have learnt in different ways (the product should be something they are comfortable with, highlighting their strengths), and teachers should be flexible about outcomes and maybe deadlines.

After a while, they will become much more confident to take higher charge of their learning.

Setting clear goals and sharing them is important as well as sharing assessment rubrics so that they know what is expected of them. I like the idea of using PBL because students can really have a choice on how to address a problem and the teacher is not the "know it all" .

Being involved in adult education, autonomy should be already obtained.
In the vast majority of cases, this isn't the case for learning.
This is why, I think, Problem-Based Learning is an interesting tool in developing skills, via peer support and self motivation.

There are several steps toward autonomy depending on students age and experience.
Since I work in a lower secondary school, my students age is from 11 to 14, but their experiences after 5 years of primary school are often unbalanced.
In the same class there may be students who already have been trained to self-direct and others who are used to be full-guided, depending on their primary teachers, their families and their own attitudes.
The main challenge is to gradually fill the gap.
We may encourage students who already have a higher level of autonomy to make more choices about their learning processes, for example carrying out Project Based Leanrning activities in a small group.
Students at a beginner level may start to make simpler choices between 2 or 3 options provided, for example a list of exercices, or an optional new tool to make their homework.

Primary school children are building new autonomies, not only on concretely visible actions (making the table, ordering the games) but more complex, for the learning of basic skills. However, they leave with autonomy and convictions on how the world (of things and thoughts) works.
We can help our students by observing and listening in order to understand how they can contribute to the activities, and to achieve class objectives; how they use our guide: are questions enough to help them take stock? Do you need more knowledge? Do they need to understand the procedures?
We can calibrate the levels of autonomy starting from small roles and a task for each to complete a group activity. Evaluate together how things are going during activities, strengths and problems. Look for solutions together and decide to try one at a time and then compare them.
If we have faith in our pupils, we encourage them to try by giving rules, choices and helping them reflect on achievements (how did you do it? Why? What did you use?) And things that didn't work (why? What happened instead? How could you do? Did you try that?) standing next to them without haste but guiding them one step at a time, they will surprise us. Because children have the joy of discovery inside :-) Seeing is believing!

After watching the video of this Module I realise that I have often made my pupils choose many things from an organisational and procedural point of view. First of all, we have to teach our students how to use different learning strategies. This is something that starts with the beginning of their school education (elementary school) and is a never ending proces, at least until they finish formal education. The innovative method I use in my classes is a method that greatly develops the autonomy of students. It has deep roots in the Socratic method and piaget's constructivist theory. Socrates, the ancient Greek philosopher, asked naïve questions that led the student to reflect and discover his own values. Piaget suggested that the student only actively builds his own knowledge through the experimental relationship with the object. The investigative method drives the student to build their own knowledge through experience, but with the right questions asked at the right time. There is an individual knowledge that grows in the student thanks to an investigative practice with permanent questions made by the teacher or by the student himself. This individual knowledge is confronted with collective knowledge, the state of the art. From "All I know i know" is "An experiment is worth a thousand words" and later "What I learned from my experience is according to what is written in theory?". The student can listen to or read, view schematics or videos, or study hundreds of hours about what a cell is, but he only understands what a cell really is after investigating it with experiments. The teacher should ask very simple questions. For example, in the study of the atmosphere: why is the sky blue by day and night is dark? In the study of the water cycle: what happens at the level of water in a glass when an ice cube inside melts? What water evaporates faster, fresh water or salt water? In photosynthesis: do plant pigments produce electricity when exposed to light? In plant physiology: do plants also feel pain? In the study of the cell: Is it possible to immortalize living beings? Since my students are very young learners (pre A1) they struggle with being independent. They value my opinion and my help and expect it with every task/activity. I've been showing them that they are capable of performing tasks/activities on their own by using, for example, words of encouragement.
I also ask students with a bit more difficulties to ask students that have already completed the task for help. That way they are learning to rely on each other and can understand that someone that is still learning is able to do it.

If we want to nurture the autonomy of students‘ learning we need to help them with giving them choices. There can be organizational choice where we let them choose where to sit, with whom to workin groups, decide about assignment dates, classroom behavioral expectations or what to put on the classroom walls. Self-actualized individuals are thought to operate autonomously of external expectations.^[2] In a medical context, respect for a patient's personal autonomy is considered one of many fundamental ethical principles in medicine.

Autonomy is also known as the ability to act on his or her own values and interests. Taken from ancient Greek, the word means 'self-legislation' or 'self-governance.

In order to do these things, the autonomous person must have a sense of self-worth and self-respect.

For me the last sentence concludes a lot for student’s autonomy, so some more key points are:

I think that students love aytonomy .When students become active learners, they learn that there might be more than one correct answer to a question and whether an answer is “correct” might be more subjective than objective. Luckily there are innumerable ways for teachers to help students develop independent thinking skills.

Independent thinking skills are at the forefront of learning how to be not only a great thinker but a great leader. Such skills teach our learners how to make sense of the world based on personal experience and observation, and to make critical well-informed decisions in the same way. As such, they gain confidence and the ability to learn from mistakes as they build successful and productive lives and as they have cognitive choice and aytonomy.By using well designed tool we can empower student's aytonomy by giving the interactive learning videos either online or in classrooms.

I would say negotiating all the time with our students: discuss the contents; present the topics that are going to be covered, giving them some freedom to choose different activities; let them choose their groups whenever possible; settle deadlines together. They need to feel they have an active role in the learning process. Hopefully, then they will feel more confident and more willing to do things on their own. Nevertheless, we need to be there, guiding them through this process by providing feedback, monitoring their work and bringing them to reason whenever needed.

There are different ways we can help our students develop their independent learning skills:
- give students options and allow them to set their own goals;
- talk to students about different ways of learning (help them find their own way of learning); different students learn differently:
- allow them to work in pairs (working in pairs helps students to use problem-solving steps, rather than relying on the teacher for answers)

In my humble opinion, such training notions should form the base of a national education system, starting from Kindergarten and primary school!

First key for the success of learning is motivation. So we should analyze pupils' need and plan motivational activities. We should set realistic goals and engage them with authentic materials. PBL at this point is a very useful approach. Engaging student with real world problems will also contribute their 21st century skills.
Group works and games may also be used to develop independent learning skills. Students may deserve a badge after completing some tasks.

There are many ways we can develop their autonomy, it will depend on their age, their level and also their motivation towards learning. At the beginning we shoud have some clear goals and instructions and during the process of learning we should help and monitor them .
Just a a few possible ideas:

coach students to set goals and develop a plan for learning;
assign esearch projects but give them choices;
give students meaningful feedback (three things they did right and three things for improvement);
provide positive reinforcement and reward initiative;
assign groups strategically (students can inspire and help each other);
improve collaboration skills using Google docs, Slideshare and other;
encourage project based lessons whenever possible;
tye the content into other subject areas to increase engagement;
encourage peer-assessment ( they pair up and take turns sharing what they have learned, so they might have a variety of perspectives).

This type of learning is really student-centered and it might appeal to some of my classes.

We can help our students giving them clear instructions, telling them setting goals, and giving them positive reinforcement and rewards. We always have to say them they are able to do what they want and that they can do anything.

There are many ways we can develop their autonomy, first key for the success of learning is motivation.

Provide students with time to self-monitor. Students can be encouraged to self-monitor by teaching them skills that will help them reach their academic goals, and by teaching them to use self and peer assessment.
Develop communication that focuses on learning. Talk to your students about the different ways of learning. Help them find their own way of learning. After all, everyone learns differently.
Provide feedback on classwork and homework. This feedback can be oral or written down on paper. Rather than grading based on how many answers on correct, consider grading on the effort the student put into the assignment.

In order to grow as autonomous learners, students need to understand the "what", "why" and "what for" of their learning, at least to a point where they start feeling engaged and their inner motivation pops up.
We can help them develop their independent or autonomous learning skills by giving them a reasonable and meaningful amount of choice in their learning process and helping them reflect on their choices and their own individual progress.

My fa vourite way to motivate students and help them gain autonomy, is to make them teachers for one day! they can make some research concerning an issue that they are keen on, and present it into the classroom. The rest of the students write down notes and ask questions. For developing the independent learning skills of my students I always try different methods:
- create open enviroment to allow all of them to be active and suportive
- tell students at least 3 things that they did right and give them 3 tips for improvement
- envolving them in a research project to share the information they learned with the class or alone
- encourage students to write down / to put questions and ideas that they have or to find more about their preocupations;
- focusing on positive side of thei work;

Working in special vocational education with students with SEN, this task is more difficult. Although my students are between 15-19 years old, they need support, coordination, encouragement. Students with moderate and mild mental disabilities, learn harder, they retain more visually, through play, have short-term memory, the effort curve is shorter. I have to say I have great students that can work by themselves, reserching anything you ask them to do; but I also have a majority of students that they are not interested in anything, and I tried many things. One thing that it worked: they filmed themselves speaking and showing their house and family. Aftere that that was the only tool they wanted to use: the rest was useless for them. Learning to be autonomous is very important for students, especially primary learners who are more dependent on their teachers' instruction. More specifically, in EFL, we seek to give students gradual autonomy by providing them with differentiated learning material as most groups in state schools are mixed ability groups with different level of English, which demotivates easily the low-performing students. One solution could be collaborative work where some students peer-teach others in the group, for instance explaining a grammatical phenomenon. Furthermore, we could have process-writing tasks (White & Arndt, 1991)with students receiving and redrafting their peers' essays. Online content varying in levels of difficulty is also a great help with the students keeping them motivated and actively engaged in the learning experience.

As video presentation suggests, in order to help my students to develop independent learning skills, i would focus on methods to enhance their autonomy, through:

· Organizational choices: where to seat, next to whom, pairing, what kind of notebook, pen, marker etc suits them best.

· Establishing a Learning contract through negotiation about classroom behavioral expectations, do's and don'ts, structure and content of assignments, due dates, types of students assessment etc

· Procedural choices: Even though courses usually come with a strict syllabus, choice of homework assignments , form of assignment (essay, powerpoint presentation etc) and form of assessment can be decided by students in order to choose which type suits them best.

· Cognitive choice: where students collaborate in groups in order to determine their own solutions to various class issues in form of a project.

The last part though is more difficult to work properly on young students. It would also require a non strict weekly class schedule, project based that promotes students initiative.

First, an attractive presentation of the topic by the teacher will initially catch their interest. Then, their personal involvement in the whole process as giving them an active role in making decisions – (choices), the selection of study groups, shared learning goals, lesson planning, collaboration with peers, editing and producing in a group. In my opinion, becoming an independent learner is strongly related to the key- word " choice". Students are much more motivated when teachers have provided them with the oppurtunity to set in collaboration with other students - and the teacher as well - organised projects or tasks that correspond to the initial goals of the lesson. Choice means also that students can take over responsibilities, initiatives that determine the learning procedure. Forming learning groups among students, give a variety of tasks or tools to be used, suggest books or links that can be useful to a problem solving or a survey, could be just the beginning! Emulation is important either of the teacher or of peers (the more competent learner in Vygotsky's PDZ) so a positive classroom environment is always a pre- requisite. I agree with most of my colleagues that choice and agency foster autonomy but I reckon a well structured planning of progressively autonomous steps is the key to build their independent skills just like with your own children, since their very early experiences you "administer" a progressive amount of autonomy and don't through them in deep ends for the sake of self-agency, but you create new challenges according to their level of independance through "scaffolding". Sometimes the problem is that, at 15 or 18 they haven't experienced the idea of struggling in growth not the experience of deep personal achievement and this makes our job so much more difficult when dealing with teenagers.

Apart from all the suggestions already made, I would like to mention the collaboration we need to have with the parents for this issue. I mean how are we supposed to teach them to be independent in classroom when they are completely dependent on their parents in order to do their homework? Of course, this is not the case for all students, but there are certain parents who do not realize how bad this is for their children. Other than that, I believe that we should teach children metacognitive strategies, so as to be able to monitor their own learning. Another thing we can do is to assign the students who need to be more independent projects about topics that interest them and perhaps no other classmates have relative knowledge, so that they can feel as "experts" and try to do their best in presenting their information to the whole of the class. This should be enough motivation for a start.

Provide students with time to self-monitor. Students can be encouraged to self-monitor by teaching them skills that will help them reach their academic goals, and by teaching them to use self and peer assessment.

I think the key to developing students' idependent learning skills is to give them the freedom of choice. If students get to choose the type of activities that they would like to engage in, the partner(s) that they would like to work with, the form that an assignment should have (essay, slide show etc.), then they would feel more responsible and would get more involved in the process. The activities that a teacher prepares for his class should be based on the principle of the Zone of Proximal Development. The activity would allow a certain degree of autonomy to the learner, but does not allow learning to happen spontaneously. First of all, we need to set clear goals for them, give them clear instrustions and to guide and facilitate them through the learning process. Of course when students are interested and motivated, they take more risks, even when they're not sure. As a foreign language teacher, I sometimes see students who normally don't speak in class, all of a sudden start speaking and don't let anyone else say anything. Why? They love the subject we are talking about.
The problem with national or school curricula is that the topics they give us are interesting to whoever makes the curricula, not to the students. For me, that's the biggest problem; it's just too boring. And quite frankly, even I am bored with some of the topics. That's usually when I use my own material, which I do a lot. But there simply isn't enough time to prepare new material all the time. I guess this also means that if we can motivate teachers to teach, and not just take care of paper work, we will better be able to motivate our students.

Developing independent learning skills of the students should be on demand a lot of years ago (talking about Greece) taken for granted:
1. their own motivation and self-consciousness towards learning.
2. learners' high competences, training skills and at least imagination so as to motivate them and to get them involved in the mode of the learning process: this is the case of flipped learning leadership. The question is do we really want it?If we want it, we can find the way.
3.The way could be:
a. an issue

4. Schedules should take these processes into account and timelines should be more flexible,

Typically a few students are internally motivated and teachers have no much worries about them. They are independent learners.
However, some need extra support to internalize the idea of independent learning and that only would take them an extra mile or we can see early dropouts.
I believe teachers play a major role creating a friendly environment suitable for learning. teachers are expected plan lessons to cater everyone's learning needs. I generally learn about my students, their characteristics, and try to analyze what are the areas each students need support. Accordingly help them to overcome and help them to build self esteem that is can greatly impact on independant learning.
