I believe that the theme of this story is, don’t let appearances of a person, place, or thing fool you. (A.k.a don’t judge a book by it’s cover.) This whole time Laurie is made to seem like a normal, little child, being over dramatic and childish. For example: Laurie presents the inciting event so casually, just mentioning that 'Charles' had recently gotten spanked. This sets up the ending as it surprises the reader with a possibility you wouldn't begin to think of.
