Do everyone think communication in common languages is important ? I thought I need to speak only English which is common language in the world when I talk with foreigners. However, I learned that I also need to speak language that is using in the place where  I'm visiting. I had many experiences that were difficulty of language at Food Fair, Home stay, and during I had conversation with the USM students in class.

On the first week, I enjoyed the Food Fair with my Japanese friends at the USM. We performed Japanese modern and traditional dance to audience with wearing Yukata. I also enjoyed eating traditional Malay food and listening to songs students were singing. I had fun time even though I couldn't understand what they are sing in Malay. However, if I knew some of Malay song or even Malay, I think I could enjoyed it more. At that night, I saw many people were interested in our performance and Yukata. Some students asked me about Japan; for example, What is the meaning of pose that  I did when I was taken photos with wearing Yukata. However, I couldn't answer for it because I don't know why. I thought I have to know more about Japanese culture if I show Japanese traditional things to other countries people. I concerned that people will have interests if they have already know because they can understand background or reasons more than they know nothing. Additionally, conversation will be fun if people can understand what they are talking about.

During home stay at Mengkuang Titi, I though speaking local language is important. Some of my host family members could speak English, but some other members couldn't speak it, so they were speaking only Malay. However, everyone was very nice to me even though I couldn't speak Malay. What I thout was

In first week (September 7th -), I studied about Penang and Malaysia. I went to NICHIAS (Japanese Factory in Penang) to learn how to operate factory in overseas. Surprisingly, workers who are Malay seems to happy to work there. Then I went to PHT (Penang Heritage Trust) , I heard about GeorgeTown, history, races like that. I questioned about GeorgeTown to PHT, however it was not easy one to express my real emotions. Of cource I could learn about GeorgeTown, I also felt my poor English. This experience motivated me to study English.

In week2, I could learn so many many things. From this week, our class started. In the class , we did "Re-Branding Project", "Make story with 3 photos" and "Roll-Playing". Throughout this class, I could improve my speaking English and present skills. In the Middle of this week, the worst thing occured. I lost my card case at RapidPenang. I called to RapidPenang and The consulate general of Japan. Also I went to Police station to make "POLICE REPORT". In order to make it, I have to talk with police officer in English. After all, driver of RapidPenang found my card case and handed it to me. I could feel kindness of Malay. In the end of this week I went to Mingkuwang Titi to homestay. I could experience traditional Malay life. Thanks to this week, I could improve my survival (=practical) English.

Week3 was something like "STUDY" week. I discussed with local USM students about "Problems of company advertisement", "Trend spotters" and " Urban Development". I think I could become real student in other countries. It was really really meaningful things and we spend wonderful time. I am glad to join this class.

As you can see, I could learn so many things in Penang. To tell the truth I did not think that I could learn these things. Threfore my heart is full of satisfaction. Definitely this 3 weeks experience helps my life.

Also my impression of Malaysia changed I thought the country Malaysia is very old-fashoned so that there are no cooler, no smartphone, no public transportation and unclean water supply. However, all of these things were wrong. Most bulbings have air conditioner (but it was too cold...), almost all student I met in USM have their own smartphones which are not out-of-date, there are minimum bus transpotation so we could go around city with bus (what I really wanted is time table) and when we turned on a tap, we could use normal water. I learned this water is exported to Singapore so it should not be low quality.

In a fine weather and good foods place, however, I had caught a cold because Penang is strange place. I realized that my body is weak for unfamiliar environment. I will be careful when I go to new place in order not to be sick. I became feeling better in only two days and then, I went shopping so many times. I noticed that many Japanese business firm inroads into Malaysia, for example, there were AEON, UNIQLO, DAISO and so on. The NICHIAS factory we visited is also Japanese company. I reconfirmed it is inseparable for corporation to the advance into overseas markets these days.

I had several wonderful experiences in Penang, that is, having home stay, feeling historical town, eating new foods meeting with new faces, enjoying beach. I will never forget  what I did, what I saw, what I heard.

Interviewing a factory wasn't easier than I thought. But Dr. Shibuya encouraged me how to interview, by showing an example to ask many questions. Even if it was not related to the information we needed for our presentation. I learned that no matter how much you research, it is never enough for a field work. Since there is always something unexpected incidents, for instanse, not being able to receiving the answers you're looking for. In other words, being flexible is necessary.

The class was mainly advanced by pair work's or split into a few groups. The latter was new to me because in my university group work is not common. The assignment to "rebrand a product" was interesting. In my group, we rebranded "iPhone" into "myPhone". Each of the member interviewed more than two USM students. After analyzing the information we got, we made a new product and presented to the class. Doing a presentation basically every day, was another experience that I was not used to, but I think this helped me to try to speak English slowly and clearly. Although it's a matter of course, I found this hard but I thought this would help me to become a better speaker.

The last week's class was mainly about discussion. Communicated with Malaysian's and Chinese students. When I first came to Malaysia, it was hard for me to understand what general Malaysian people were saying. The reason why is because, their English accent and intonation was distinct from the American English, I was familiar to. Therefore, I found it hard to convert with them. However getting to know a new way of talking English was interesting since you could only experience this in the respective country you go to. In class, we not only discussed about the assignments but also chatted with the USM student's. When I found out that one of the senior liked the same author as me, this made me want to socialize with more new people.

In conclusion, learning unaccustomed culture and language is a challenge, but communicating with new people, or taking class's that are distinct from Japan will be the foundation to make me one step closer to do the occupation I want to become in the future.419

The first day in Penang, soon after arriving at Penang airport, we went to Chinese stall for dinner. then I eat Malaysian food for the first time. in Japan there are no stall like this so I was looking forward to going stall very much. I had spicy fried rice. it was too spicy for me but the taste was good. before I came to Malaysia, I questioned to my friend who went Malaysia for a weak, how was Malaysia? then at first she said the food was not good. I can't believe her words. I like Malaysian food and now I can eat spicy food and I like it so mush. what I was the most surprised is the price of food. It was only 5 RM and so cheap. But
actually everything is cheaper than Japan so when I went to queens bee, I thought
I could buy cosmetic cheaper too. But the price was 33RM and the same as in
Japan. Other things like clothes ware also the same price in japan. In japan,
the eating out cost and the cosmetic price is almost the same. Then I wondered
whether the price of food is especially cheap or the price of food is average
and cosmetic or clothes are expensive for Malaysian people.

In Malaysia we see many Malay people because
they are majority but in queens bee, I realized the most of customer was
Chinese. But most of the clerk was Malay people. It is interesting for me and I want to know how the gap of economic power between the each races is and is there any differences of job suitable for each
races.

At first I thought only shopping . but trough shopping , I found many interesting point and I wanted
to know more about Malaysia. I will never forget this experience.

In Malaysia I recognized cultural differences between Malaysia and Japan. Within a two week I went several places, NICHIAS, Georgetown, PHT and Mengkan titi. When I visit NICHIAS there are more different race people than japan. What I learned from NICHIAS is that even if the race is different people can work equally. While talking with a member of PHT I feel that preservation of own culture is very hard. On the other hand I was inspired from one way to tell history to people. It was objects made by steal. These objects represent one scene of the history. This idea is great. Furthermore in Mengka titi I could experience pure Malaysia.

Besides learning different culture from these outer activities, I also learned English in class. In class mainly I learned about communication in English. In every class we have to talk with each other in English and required to give my opinion especially in group discussion. We had a lot of group discussion, rebranding and talk with USM students about one topic. These group discussion helped me to have a confidence with telling own opinion and speaking English. In addition in a classroom there were many different races and I enjoyed talking with them a lot.

Of course I enjoyed free time. In order not to be bored buddies made plans and took us a lot of places. One day we went Chinese temple and Penang hill. This was my first time to see a traditional style temple, so I really enjoyed it. Other day they brought us to Fort Cornwalls in there we enjoyed eating dinner with buddies and teachers, but regrettably we cannot see fire work, if I have a chance I want see it with them.

While I am in Malaysia my image of Malaysia were completely changed. Before coming Malaysia I think it as one of the small country in Asia, but now in my mind Malaysia is very interesting country which has a lot of cultures and people. Through Study Tour of Penang I felt the multi culture and met a lot of new people this experience must be helpful for me someday. If I have a chance I want to com again.

At first, arriving at Penang airport. I'm amazed the temperature and humid of Malaysia. I have already known that the temperature in Penang is very hot, but I don't know that the humid in Penang is too high. I remember that I worried about my health.

The other day, I joined the campus tour. In the campus tour, many Malaysian students told me about USM. The first impression of USM is too large place. And it is very interesting for me that the school bus goes around in the university. This is because Saitama university is very small university in Japan.

After studying and staying at Penang, I recognized that Malaysian culture and Japanese culture are very different and very similar.

The different things between Malaysia and Japan are the bus system, the food, the religion, the races, and the number of the motor bike. In Japan there is a time table of the bus. It is a very slight time table. If the bus is late, the bus driver apologize the people who get on the bus. However, In Malaysia, there is no time table of the bus. It struck me very much. I came to know that Malaysian people and Japanese people have the different sense of the time.Malaysian food is very spicy compered with Japanese food. I like Spicy food. So Malaysian food is very suitable for me. After I come back to Japan, I will miss the Malaysian food.In Japan, there are three races (Yamato, Ainu, Ryukyu). However, 90 percent of Japanese are Yamato. Therefore, I cannot feel the other races. However, In Malaysia, there are many races (Malay, Chinese, Indian). The number of Malay, Chinese and Indian is a lot. Therefore, I could feel three races in Malaysia.

I also find similar point between Malaysia and Japan. The most similar point is that people are very kind. When I ate lunch or dinner at restaurant or stall, Malaysian people talked me many times, sometimes in Japanese. It makes me very happy. The buddies also very kind. When Japanese students are confused, they help a lot without frowned.

I could have a lot of awesome experiences in Penang. This is because many people helped me a lot.  Thanks for buddies. Thanks for Ms. Christine. Thanks for Penang. Thanks for everything. I already miss Penang.

In Penang, I enjoyed a lot of things like shopping, talking with Malaysian people and enjoying sports like dancing, basketball and football.

In Penang, there are a lot of shopping malls or market around the island. First I went to shopping mall in Queens Bay. In the shopping mall, there were many Japanese shops like DAISO, UNIQLO and MIYABI. I walked around the mall and  looked around a book store and game center. The thing I was surprised was that there were TAIKO NO TATSUZIN in the game center, and the language is Japanese! I do not know whether the Malaysian people can understand the game or not.

In the game center, I asked about the game by a Malaysian people. I played the secret revel of that game, so he asked how to play the secret mode. In such situation, I have many chances to talk with Malaysian people. To be honest, talking in English with Malaysian people is hard for me. That is because I study which USA people use, so listening at the English with Malay accent is little bit hard for me. Besides, the opponent cannot understand my English because of may be the difference of the accent. So, conversation was not smooth. However, when I managed to make understand myself, I got the sense of achievement. That is why I think talking with people was interesting.

And I enjoyed sports. In first week, I played basketball with my friends in RECSAM. While we are playing basketball, few Malaysian people came and we played with them. On Sunday in first week, we performed Japanese traditional dance at international food fare. We performed "Soran Bushi" . Before the performance, we practice the dance, so I think I could dance . However, though I am in the first low, I move wrong many times. But I do not care about that. I can enjoy the performance anyway. In second week, I played football with my Japanese friends and friends in USM. I played football on the shopping mall. Everyone said jokes while playing football, so that game was so fun.

After coming Penang,  I realized that everything can make connection with people. Even the game made connection as I wrote. And I think sports is very good way to make friends because we can know each other through the sports even if we cannot communicate in words. I mainly enjoyed to meet new people in this tour. And I would like to meet new people more.

First memory is people's passion. When I arrived at Penang int'l airport, My first impression is "This place is very hot!!". It means not only temperature but also people's passion. When I came to Chinese stall to have a dinner, I was overwhelmed by people worked and eating at stalls. In Japan. people don't rise their voices up so often. But Malaysia, people usually rise their voices and enjoy eating through talking and laughing. I thought those passions are one of the power of developing.

 Second memory is diversity of Malaysia. Several days later from arrive, when I watch the window from the RapidPenang, I can see a lot of China characteristics as well as Malaysian Characteristics. In addition, some Arabic characteristics are also seen on the street. I realized that Malaysia is one of the multiethnic country. Furthermore, when I walked on the street, each person is different figure. For example, Malaysian women wear hijab on the head to hide their hairs, but other ethnics women doesn't. Indian women put Bindi on the forehead, but others doesn't. In food culture, because Muslim people has strict toward food such as not eating pork, people and food company receive a certification of halal. On the other hand, Hindu people mustn't eat beef, and Chinese can eat everything. So, on the restaulants, what they can offer is depending on which religion. For example, in the usual Chinese stand can offer pork foods, but Chinese Muslim can't offer it. These difference is very interesting for me. And because Malaysia is a multiethnic country, what they can speak and the mother tangue is depends on the family's environment.I think that's because Malaysian can speak two or three language to necessity of other ethnic's necessity.

 Third memory is people's kindness and unkindness. At first glance these two memories are conflict, but I'll try to explain. For example of kindness, people who live in the rural area is so kind for me. When I do home stay at Malaysian's house, even though my roommate and I can't understand any kinds of Malaysian, but our host families attached to us kindly. In addition, RECSAM, where we stayed, there staff is very kind for us by using unskillful English. But on the other hand, in the fast food restaurant, almost attendant gives us only a blunt face and their reception is so poor compared with that of Japanese.

As I said above, through stay and trip in Malaysia, I can feel and have many experience. Actually, I've never been to abroad before, so it's the first time to go overseas. I really enjoyed this trip, and I'm so happy to be here and write a essay. English lectures in USM are so useful for me and meeting, talking and discussing time with Malaysian people is very precious for me and these experiences sometime will become big energy of my growing.

 First, I would like to write about homestay at Mengkuan Titi. during this homestay, I found not only a different lifestyle but same lifestyle between Japan and Malaysia. for examle, I had a meal by hand while sitting on the floor  in homestay. However, it is so rude that you do like that in Japan. This is one of the different lifestyles. On the other hand, I noticed the same lifestyles. For instance, when I enter my host family's house, I was asked to take off my shoes. it was so surprising for me, because I thought that only Japanese people have this custom. also I was surprised that my host family have electric appliances such as air conditioner, PC, smartphone and so on. thses are interesting similarities. To be honest, I did not want to have a homesaty. However now, I miss my host family and I hope I could see them again. This home stay was so valuable experience in my life.

   Second, I would like to write about class
in USM. To be honest, I did not understand why we go to Malaysia in order to
study English before going to USM. But now, I am satisfied with this study
trip. Because, USM students can speak English much better than us. When I discussed
with USM students, I felt miserable about my English skill and I realized that I
need to improve my English skill, especially speaking skill. Therefore, putting
this experience to use, I will study English so hard in Japan.

  Finally,I would like to write about playing soccer with local people. When I walked
around Recsam, I saw local people playing soccer. So I asked them to play
soccer with me and I played with them. It was so good experience, because,  I was only Japanese in the members. They can
not speak English, so I could not do verbal communication. But I could enjoy
playing soccer with them. So I think that the international language is not English but
sports.

  In conclusion, I learned a lot of things during the three weeks. This experience will help me a lot in the future. So I deeplyappreciate people who help us for three weeks. Thank you.

Arriving at Penang, I thought 'what a hot country!!'I have never been to Penang,so it is natural to be surprised. If the equator was near, and Penang was very hot, I understood. and I ate dinner toward the stand(chinese stand). Therefore I have been surprised. Prices are very low.It was almost around a one-third of Japan.I ordered nasi goreng.It was very nice and delicious.Then most of first week passed by sightseeing or a company visit. I was surprised to look at various Landmark architectures in Georgetown. in the Japanese-affiliated company called NICHIAS,I was impressed by a Japanese company playing an active part in Malaysia.

In the week2, The event that was the most impressive for me was homestay.

I was impressed by the dance of the local person,and oneself deepend culture understanding by participating.I throughly enjoyed the meal of traditional Penang.Ifelt kindness of local people.

In the week3, In the class,communicate with USM students.I had a good time.I had a Jaanese talk and listened to the story of Penang too.There are a lot of discovery.

As you can see,i could learn many things in Penang.This experience will help it by all means when I failed in the life.I thank all people. Thanks every thing.

This is my first trip to go abroad. In Japan at first, I was afraid of going abroad, but now I am enjoying my life in Malaysia. Do you know why? This is because I am able to experience a lot of new amazing things. I have three special things for me; about rebranding class, our buddies, and home stay in Mengkuang Titi. I am going to write about it.

First, rebranding class was interesting and meaningful. We was split into six groups and my group rebranded Big Mac to "H-Big Mac" which "H" meaned healthy. I had to interview to Malaysian students. I asked eight students and all of them answered very kindly. The interview process was interesting for me. Moreover my group members were Naoya, Honoka, and Tat. I thought that it was not meaningful for us to leave everything to Tat. I tried to participate in discussion positively. It was very meaningful experience.

Second, our buddies were so friendly and reliable. We traveled around Penang with them on September 12th. They took us to morning market, the biggest temple in South-East Asia, Penang Hill, and Miami Beach. It was a lot of fun. After that, we went to International Food Fair in USM. We performed traditional Japanese dance and modern dance. The show was very successful. The day is the best day for me in Malaysia. I cannot thank our buddies enough.

Last thing is home stay in Mengkuang Titi. We went there and was split into pairs. I and Miina were in the same house. I was not able to understand most of what my host family said because I did not know Malay words, but I counld communicate with them in English and Malay with body languages. And also, I gave some souvenirs from Japan. It was fun for my host brothers who were four and six years old. They enjoyed playing with toys which I gave them. Futhermore, the most imprressive part was that I ate meals by hand. At first, it looked strange for me, but I enjoyed the style of how to eat in Malaysia. My home stay was a little hard, but almost it was a lot of fun. This was great experience for me.

In conclusion, I am enjoying myself in Malaysia despite I was afraid of going abroad before I came into Panang. Rebranding class was interesting and meaningful, I had very nice time with our buddies, and home stay was great experience. There were many memories except these three. That is why I am able to enjoy my life in Malaysia. Everything was special for me and now I do not want to go back to Japan. This trip must become the most important memory and experience in my whole life. I would like to come here again in the near future. (474 words)

I had conversation and discussions with the USM students this week. We were talking about ourselves, advertising, marketing, and education. I really enjoyed it because I could hear lots of different opinions from each students. Sometimes it was difficult to understand what they were saying because some students speak too fast, too low, or not clear pronunciation. I noticed that why I can hear beautiful English from teachers; this is because they are saying words loudly, slowly, and clearly. I learned not only how to introduce myself and express my opinions but also speak out.

We need to communicate and understand about opinions or cultures with other countries people by learning own culture well, studying some language that you will stay,and saying worlds clearly. We can't understand about other people's opinions or culture well if we can't understand what people are saying. Therefore, we should learn how to communicate with other people whether someone was Japanese or foreigners.
