The quotes give us much needed reason that he does not make very much and yet is the "bread winner" in the family in paying for the house between the 3 of them. The picture helps because the employee looks tired and probably works long hours like Tom, also with the cash paying for expenses. And back then they had to work extremely hard to help provide for their family, and that is what Tom is doing.
