Justin Seimet MODULE 1
Summary:

This article begins by covering the Alabama Governor’s decision to vote for Roy Moore despite many allegations of sexual assault. The governor goes on to say that she believes in the party, what it stands for, and emphasizes the importance of having a republican in the senate. Following the governor’s response are the allegations made against Roy Moore. It covers that 9 women have come forward along with some details of their stories. The details include disturbing accusations of a then 30 something Roy Moore acting inappropriately in some cases and down right evil in others. His alleged actions range from harassment of some of the women in the form of repeated requests for dates to full fledged sexual assault of a minor. When asked about the credibility of the claims the Alabama Governor told reporters, “I certainly have no reason to disbelieve any of them. The timing is a little curious. But at the same time, I have no reason to disbelieve them.” Several prominent republicans have stated that Moore should leave the race and the president stated that if the allegations are true he should leave.

Analysis:

In politics we too often find that the end justifies the means. That is, which is the lesser of two evils is the entity that will get promoted. For example, I know specifically of many citizens who voted for Donald Trump based on that he was the lesser of two evils. It seems that we have the same genre of case here. Politicians like this Alabama governor as well as some of Alabama’s citizens will vote for Roy Moore despite what looks like credible allegations against him. I believe that they would rather have a moral candidate to vote for but will in the end vote for him to keep the greater of two evils out of the Senate. Actions such as these are an example of consequentialism theory specifically of the utilitarianism type.

Reference

Blumberg, A, (2017, November 17).
Pentagon Advocates Requiring Women to Sign up for Military Draft

Justin Seimet MODULE 2
Summary:

This article addresses the advantages of, and movements taken, to provide women with the opportunity to join their male counterparts in registering for selective service. Commonly known as the draft. In recent years, the U.S. government has opened almost all of its combat roles to women. We have women infantrymen, women rangers, and have women combat pilots. One of the last steps to ensure equality is to require women to register along with the men. The article addresses the importance of having the ability to call up a significant military force, which could be a deterrent to hostile state actors. The addition of females to these roles would immediately add 11 million names to the registry. Currently there is no legislation available for a vote but a panel has been created to analyze the effects of female registration.

Analysis:

The article is a good example of principles of equality. Females have progressed a long way within the military since the women’s army corps was abolished. Initially, they only served in administrative and health positions. Today, we have women in all ranks and almost all roles. Eventually, females will be integrated into even the most elite of our units. That being said, this policy shows a very progressive set of values within the military and government.

Reference

Scarborough, R. (2017, October 24).
