Scylla is a six-headed monster, that swallows sailors. Charybdis is an enormous whirlpool that threatens to swallow the entire ship. The easiest way to beat them, was to avoid them. He rowed through a narrow channel, avoiding Charybdis, but forcing them to pass Scylla.
