The Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics were created to guide ethical technology use; however, people, including students, often violate them, which can be due to a lack of awareness, peer pressure, and academic stress. Many turn to pirated software, such as Adobe or Microsoft Office, because they can’t afford it or are unaware of legal alternatives.

Many students struggle with limited reading habits, which hinders their ability to generate original ideas or understand academic material deeply. Time constraints; whether due to part-time jobs, personal responsibilities, or social commitments; leave little room for thorough research or thoughtful writing. Additionally, gaps in foundational knowledge from prior courses can leave students feeling ill-equipped to handle more advanced tasks independently.

Another significant factor is low self-confidence. Students may believe that the work already available online is of higher quality than anything they could produce themselves. This belief, combined with the easy accessibility of other people's work, makes it tempting to copy content rather than develop one's own.

To reduce or eliminate this type of unethical behavior, we must first focus on raising awareness and providing education. Students need to understand not only that plagiarism is unethical but also the consequences, both academic and professional, that come with it. Providing ample time, resources, and support is also essential. When students are given tools such as writing workshops, research guidance, and mentorship, they are more likely to succeed independently.

We can also help highlight positive role models, such as students who, despite challenges, have developed their own ideas and succeeded through hard work and perseverance. This fosters a growth mindset and promotes academic integrity. At the same time, institutions should be clear about sanctions for plagiarism to discourage violations, while also recognizing and rewarding honest, original work to reinforce good behavior.
