What does it mean to be “intimately oppressed”? Why is intimate oppression so “hard to uproot”? (Respond to the prompt or to the discussion three times)

One point I'd like to bring up in the discussion of the impact of the American Revolution on the role of women in society of what I believe was called Republican Motherhood. A lot of emphasis was placed on women teaching the ideals of the revolution to their children, which gave them a significant amount of power in comparison to what they had before. Granted, it wasn't enough, but it was a form of progress. - Leah

To comment on the term passive resistance, I think this was a huge part of what led to women gaining more and more rights. It didn't send a huge message, but I think it is significant that women were able to slowly change peoples' minds and exercise their beliefs while maintaining a good standing in society. I think this also reflects traditional roles that had been enforced for so long. They'd been taught to be quiet and kind and perfect for their whole lives, so when standing up against injustice, they managed to prove their point while remaining within those boundaries. - Leah

Intimately oppressed is a term that applies to women and their rights over themselves. It is targeted towards them and women having a say is so stigmatized that it creates a brick wall due to the onset of generations of traditional roles and the fear of changes even though they just wanted to be viewed as equal. A good point brought up was religion, as the idea of a "pure" woman was ideal in society and painted a picture of the role of the woman: to be attentive, delicate, and serve their husbands. The influence religion had on the country was immense and it was hard going against the majority.

-Melani

Women started the revolution in order to suppress those who suppressed them. Women wanted their rights and wanted to be seen as equals-they should be respected and cared for. During the movement, the women started getting jobs as teachers and they pushed their beliefs of equality onto those who wanted to listen, making the Women's Rights Movement larger and have more of an impact since it was women who were teaching the kids. Women weren't just doing the housework but actually gaining some income for the house, these women gained their voice through peaceful protest.

Intimate oppression is a hard thing to break due to it being such a long term thing, it’s something that happens in minuscule ways that teach women that they’re seen as lesser or that they’re less valued because of their sex. It’s something you see in your everyday life: when you’re condescended by your boss for making a mistake your male coworker got away with, when you see your mother get treated in a slightly disrespectful manner or get ignored when you’re father is there. It’s small things that remind you of the small difference between you and the men. Especially in different cultures, women are treated as less or as something to bargain away, it demeans them and hands these ideas down from mother to daughter.
