In Chapter One: The Exam of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, the author takes us back to 1951 and portrays the urgency of her medical condition and the social injustice of the time. We learn that she has been with her husband since she was fourteen, and together they have had five kids. However, her husband is a cheater and an unloyal man who has acquired many STDs from his numerous nights with countless women, which she has then picked up. When Henrietta finds the knot in her cervix, she is weary to go to the hospital in fear of the doctor taking her womb and thus, her ability to have kids. She visits the John Hopkins OB/GYN, and we learn that there is a big injustice surrounding every hospital, even the ones that do serve African-Americans like John Hopkins does, and segragation is something unavoidable. After checking in at the black ward of the hospital, she goes in to her appointment, undresses, and waits anxiously until the doctor reaches the same conclusion; there is a knot in her cervix, and it was cancerous.

Either her doctors had missed it during her last exams-which seemed impossible-or it had grown at a terrifying rate. It made me predict that her tumor is very dangerous and life threatening and she may possibly die soon if not treated properly. She is also black which makes me predict that either a: she doesn't get proper treatment and care or b: she cant afford any treatment in order to stop her tumor from growing."(Skloot 17)

In Chapter Two: Clover of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, we are taken back to Henriettaś childhood, where she was born in Roanoke, VA, on August 1st, 1920, and had nine siblings. When her mother passed, her father took all of the kids to family in Clover, VA, where they were split up and raised by whoever wanted them. Henrietta ended up living with her grandparents and her cousin (as well as future husband) David ¨Day¨ Lacks. Later, they had children and were married in April of 1941. Henrietta and her cousins had spent years working on the tobacco farms to earn enough money, until cousin Fred came back from Baltimore where he worked for a steel company in Sparrowś Point to visit, and convince Day to work with him and get enough money to move his wife and kids there, too. When Fred was drafted overseas, he gave all of his savings to Day, and Henrietta and their two children moved from Clover to Turnerś Station, seeking out their new lives.

In Chapter Three: Diagnosis and Treatment of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, we learn more about the scientists involved in cervical cancer, and specifically, Richard Wesley TeLinde. TeLinde was referred to as Uncle Dick by everyone at Hopkins, and he had pioneered the use of estrogen for treating symptoms of menopause, as well as other things. By 1951, he had developed a theory about cervical cancer that had the potential to save the lives of millions. There are two types of cervical carcinomas; invasive and noninvasive. Many doctors believed that noninvasive was not deadly, but TeLinde was convinced it was the precancerous stage of invasive carcinoma. He performed very aggressive surgeries, often removing the cervix, uterus, and most of the vagina. Critics called it extreme and unnecessary. The Pap smear was developed, and has been able to detect precancerous cells if read properly, saving many lives and catching cancer early. Critics ridiculed TeLinde, and he set out to prove them wrong. They found out that 62% of women with invasive cancer who had biopsies first had the noninvasive type. TeLinde gave Gey Henriettaś cells, and he set out to study them and keep them alive.

In Chapter 4, The Birth of HeLa in the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, we discover the setup of George Geyś lab, and how repulsively unsanitary it is in most areas. We also learn that Gey is very resourceful and thinks outside of the box, using junkyard scraps to build his lab. His twenty-one year-old assistant Mary Kubicek, was hired for the steadiness and dexterity of her hands. Because of this, Mary now handled most of the tissue samples that came through the door, yet all of them had died. We are run through the sterility process as Mary goes to enter her 5X5 cubicle, and handle and slice Henriettaś cells before placing them with the chicken-blood clots and culture medium (a recipe constantly changing and developing) before sealing them and labeling the tubes as she always did; with the first and last two initials of the patientś name: HeLa. After learning more about the background of George Gey and his wife Margaret, we are taken back to the lab with Mary where, astonishingly, Henriettaś cells are doubling every 24 hours. As long as they had food and warmth, HeLaś cancer cells seemed unstoppable. George told a few colleagues that he believed they might have finally succeeded; Henriettaś cancer cells could be immortal. They asked for some, and he said yes.

In Chapter 5, ¨Blackness Be Spreadin All Inside¨ in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, things seem to be going well with Henrietta's cancer treatment. We learn that when Day worked the night shift, Henrietta and her cousin Sadie would sneak out and go dancing. Henrietta was known to bring out the good in everyone, but her cousin's wife, Ethel. We learn the names of her children, and that her eldest, Elsie, was mentally disabled and doctors sent her away to the ¨Hospital for the Negro Insane¨, over an hour away. Henrietta visited her weekly, where she would hold her as she cried. It was said that Henrietta died a bit the day Elsie was sent away. For awhile, Henrietta hid her cancer from everyone, but when she informed her cousins Sadie and Margaret, she assured them it was nothing too bad. At the time, she seemed to be right. The tumor had completely diminished from the radium treatments, her cervix no longer purple, but slightly red and inflamed from treatment. They continued to treat her with radiation, and never once mentioning that she was now infertile. Three weeks after starting x-ray treatment, she was burning from the inside, her urine and discharge odd and burning, and when she raised her shirt, from her breasts to her pelvis she was the color of tar and charcoal.

The man who was the link to Henrietta's family, Roland Pattillo grilled and cautioned her for three days before he finally believed in her good intentions and gave her Deborah's number. Deborah talked to her for hours, eagerly and longing for more information about her mother and what her cells are doing. However, when Deborah told her family that she was talking to Rebecca, she was told not to speak to her again and just write her own book. Instead, she gave Rebecca her dad's number, and two of her brother's numbers, with orders to try and change their minds. When Rebecca called, they knew she was a white woman, and Day hung up.

In Chapter 7 of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, George Gey goes on TV and announces that he believes that he may have the first immortal cells, and that cancer may be able to be conquered. Henrietta's cells were so precious because they allowed scientists to perform experiments and studies that couldn't be done inside of the human body. However, no one was really interested in Gey's work because of Alexis Carrel, who had lied and thus poisoned the public's belief on the possibility of cell immortality. Carrel, besides lying, was also a racist and sexist jerk who later praised Hitler and felt stupid people didn't deserve the rights stated in the Constitution. Leonard Hayflick was the one who challenged the credibility of the immortal chicken heart cells, and at least one of Carrel's former assistants verified his suspicions. Tissue culture became the stuff of racism, creepy sci-fi, Nazis, and snake oil.

In Chapter 8 of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, Henrietta voiced her concerns that her cancer was spreading. Multiple times she was dismissed and sent home, until she demanded help and to stay at the hospital. Her suspicions were correct; the cancer was spreading and tumors were popping up everywhere. Doctors increased doses of radiation, drew blood and stole cells, and tried multiple injections of pain medicines, all of which failed. Henrietta ended up dying slowly and painfully. And although George Gey was never recorded speaking to Henrietta, but one lab assistant claimed that he had in fact visited her, smiling as her told her that her cells would live on and save lives and Henrietta had smiled and said she was glad her pain would pay off.

In Chapter 9 of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, Rebecca was supposed to meet with Sonny, Henrietta's son, and if she was lucky, Deborah. She checked into a Baltimore hotel and anxiously waited to meet him, but Sonny bailed. Instead, she went to Turner Station and drove around the small town awkwardly. Finally, she ended up at the Speed's, where she met Mama Speed (Courtney) and her sons. Mama was at first welcoming, and then cold and hesitant until she believed in her intentions. Mama Speed then took Rebecca to the local library, and got her the BBC documentary about Henrietta that she had been trying to get her hands on for months. Rebecca was ordered to watch the one hour video carefully and not miss a thing, and she did just that. That night, back at the hotel, she finally got ahold of Sonny, who told her he decided against meeting her, but wouldn't tell her why. When she said she wanted to go to Clover and visit Henrietta's cousins, Sonny simply chuckled and wished her good luck.

Lacks Town is very small and worn down, but Rebecca is totally lost and continues to drive up and down the one street. She runs into Cootie (Hector Henry), Henrietta's first cousin. He offers for her to come inside and he will grab her some juice, and then Cootie’s home is described to us. It is rather run down, and he, although partially paralyzed from the polio he had decades before, has made many repairs and even rebuilt the home after it burnt down. Cootie answers some of her questions, and talks about how Henrietta cared for him when he got polio, and her family never got any help or money after her cells were being sold. Cootie believed that Henrietta's cancer wasn't just any regular cancer, because regular cancer wouldn't keep growing after a person died.

In Chapter 12: The Storm of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, we find out that Henrietta had no obituary, and Gey wanted to take tissue and organ samples, but they had to get Day’s permission. When Day was asked permission for the autopsy, he said no. Doctors kept pressuring him and asking him, and he finally gave up and signed the autopsy permission form. They cut samples from everything and everywhere, and tumors were everywhere. Mary, Gey’s assistant, saw Henrietta's toenails, painted her usual, perfect red, and Mary realized that Henrietta wasn't just a body or HeLa or anything the lab used her for, but she was a real person! Mary nearly fainted.

Family gathered in Lacks Town as the undertaker drove through and to the cemetery, trying to find an open place to put Henrietta's body. Elsie didn't know her mother had died, and the Lackses only remember one thing about the service; the sky turned black and the rain poured. The storm that followed was strong and loud and angry, and the family knows she was trying to tell them something with that storm.

In Chapter 13: The HeLa Factory of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, a HeLa factory was in the plans. They wanted to produce trillions of her cells each week, and it would be to help stop polio. People claim to have the vaccine to polio, and many things have to be tested. The vaccination process is discussed, and the struggle to find the cells for neutralization tests that weren't from monkeys (which were super expensive). The timing for Gey is perfect, and HeLa is a gold mine- the cells grow unlike any other human cells. In fact, her cells are even more susceptible to the virus than any other cultured cells had been before. Gey has to experiment on ways to mass-ship these cells, and Tuskegee becomes the center and provides 100,000s of dollars in funding, jobs, and training opportunities for young black scientists (ironic???). This all occurred during the infamous Tuskegee syphilis studies. They find new ways to ship and store and study the cells, such as freezing them and examining them during various freezing points. We learn why HeLa grew and why it was important, and their slow discovery on chromosomes (which HeLa helped sort out). Margaret Gey and many of Gey’s colleagues pushed for George Gey to publish research papers to get credit, but he is too busy and doesn't want to. Margaret publishes and writes his work for him. George grows upset at the fact that he is now completely out of control of HeLa, and a fellow colleague tells him that since he released the strain so widely, he can’t take back the progress. Soon, people started to wonder about the person behind the cells.

No one knows who leaked that, but Roland H. Berg, an NFIP press officer, writes Gey with an interest to write a more detailed article about HeLa for a popular magazine.

In Chapter 16: "Spending Eternity in the Same Place" of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, we are taken to the graveyard, where Cliff explains that the grave markers are mostly eroded, if they were ever there in the first place. Many of the Lackses couldn't afford a headstone, and no one really knew where one grave ended and another began. As a result, a lot of them were buried one on top of the other. We learn that there's both white and black Lackses, yet they never mix and the white ones don't really "believe" in the black ones. They have pretty much disowned them. We become introduced to many different family members, and find out that the black Lackses all originated from two brothers, Benjamin and Albert Lacks, and their relations with their slaves. Lillian Lacks, Henrietta's youngest sibling, converted to Puerto Rican, and disowned her blackness because she was light enough to pass and didn't want to be black anymore.

In Chapter 17: Illegal, Immoral, and Deplorable of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, we are introduced to Chester Southam, a scientist who feared that Henrietta's cancer cells could infect those working on them. As a result, he would load syringes with saline solution and HeLa cells, and then inject them into people. His first was a woman who was hospitalized for leukemia, and then tattooed a dot at the sight to see if a tumor would form. He did this with another dozen cancer patients, but didn't inform them of what exactly he was doing. Instead, he said that he was just testing their immune systems, which he believed he was (in a way). Southam removed some of the modules to test if they were cancerous or not, yet others he let grow to see if they would spread or not. He eventually removed the tumors in most patients, and in a few others they vanished on their own. Yet in four, they continued to come back. Southam then tested on "healthy" people at the Ohio prison, and the men fought it completely. He believed he was on track for a cure, and continued to inject many people (roughly 600), later leading to a court trial because people were mad that he did this all without consent. He claimed that if he were to use the word "cancer" people would refuse (duh!) and he wouldn't have subjects to test on. The Nuremberg code is brought up, yet Americans believe that that only applied to barbarians and dictators, not U.S. doctors. Proper laws of consent are created after Chester Southam's work.

In Chapter 18: "Strangest Hybrid" of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, numerous discoveries on cells and their uses and what they can do are found. HeLa is so widespread that people could grow it at home by simply following a DIY article. Herietta's cells went up into the second satellite ever into space, and found something terrifying: noncancerous cells grew normally in orbit, but HeLa became more powerful, dividing faster with each trip. Scientists begin to notice two oddities and similarities, and William Scherer, Lewis Coriell, and Robert Stevenson helped to form a Cell Culture Collection Committee, along with other tissue culturists. They set out to create the "Fort Knox" of pure and uncontaminated cell culture, using many different strains, but HeLa contaminated them all. Cell sex is discovered, which occurred when cells were infected with certain viruses in culture, and clumped together, occasionally fusing. The technical term for this is somatic cell fusion, but some simply referred to it as cell sex. Somatic cell fusion allowed for researchers to combine cells with desired traits and study how those passed along. Essentially, researchers were "breeding" cells. They created hybrids, the first a HeLa-Mouse hybrid. (half mouse, half HeLa cells.) but eventually, the mouse cells and DNA replaced the HeLa ones. Because of this breeding and these "hybrids" the public fears that scientists will create monsters in their attempt to "be gods".

Deborah marries Alfred "cheetah" Carter, the boy Galen had once been jealous of, and things aren't as perfect as she'd pictured. Alfred gets a drug addiction and beats Deborah when she's high. She finally has enough of it, and comes very close to killing him, but Bobbette talks her down. Instead, she and the kids move out while he is at work, and she struggles to make ends meet while carrying two jobs. Joe, the youngest, is constantly unleashing his anger and anyone and everyone. After many fights and more time in solitary confinement than on the field, he is discharged. When he gets home, Eldridge Lee Ivy tries to pick a fight and threatens to kill Joe, but Joe ignores him the first time. Later, however, his anger boils over and he stabs Ivy straight through the heart. At first he runs to Clover, but then decides to turn himself in, and it takes seven months for his trial to take place. Joe ended up getting a 15-year sentence instead of 30, and while in prison he found Islam and changed his name to Zakariyya Bari Abdul Rahman.

In Chapter 20: The HeLa Bomb of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, Stanley Gartler stepped up to the podium at the Second Decennial Review Conference on Cell Tissue and Organ Culture, and essentially shot down all of the research that had been used with the eighteen most common cell cultures; they all contained a rare genetic marker called G6PD-A, almost exclusively found in black people and more importantly, Henrietta Lacks. HeLa had contaminated all of these cell strands, because they were so “contagious”. Her cells could float through air on dust particles, transfer on coats or pipettes, and even though ventilation systems. They had even penetrated the ATCC aka Fort Knox. It was so devastating to these researchers who had put in decades and millions of dollars only to have continued regrowing HeLa, that many of them were in denial and refused to believe in these accusations and “attacks”. More precautions end up taking place in order to prevent cell cross-contamination.

In Chapter 21: Night Doctors of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, Sonny finally meets with Rebecca, and takes her to see Lawrence, who he calls “The Big Kahuna”. Lawrence cooks her some pork and eggs, and they ease into conversation, but he dances around the subject of his mom. Eventually, he gives in, and starts talking about what he know that her cells did. However, he doesn’t really know what a cell is, so Rebecca draws him a picture of one and explains it to him. As he takes everything in, he seems to become more surprised and amazed. Then, Sonny comes in with Day, who was 84 years old, and Bobbette soon comes down the stairs as well. We learn that the family has many medical issues, yet they refuse to see a doctor and get them fixed in fear that doctors will take from them, too. The family opens up and talks, and slowly, their anger at the injustice they’ve dealt with bubbles into their voices and actions. They talk about “night doctors”, doctors that would kidnap black people at night for research. The tale has been passed down orally since the 1800s, and some stories were made up by plantation owners to scare their slaves into not trying to escape. We learn about John Hopkins, and his hopes for the hospital he funded, yet how many of those were corrupted. The family yet again voices their anger.

In Chapter 22: ¨The Fame She So Richly Deserves¨in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, we learn that Gey has pancreatic cancer. In light of this new information, Gey calls in for an emergency procedure, and orders his surgeons to take samples of his tumor, just like he had Dr. Wharton do for Henrietta years and years ago. He gives them careful instructions on how to grow the cell line he wants to create, GeGe, however, when they open him up, they discover that the cancer cannot be operated on, and so despite his wishes, they stitch him back up. When George awakes, he is furious that they did not meet his wishes, and says that they should´ve, even if it could´ve killed him because he wants to advance science even if his cancer will kill him. Gey then contacted many people and clinics asking if they needed a cancerous research subject, and was used for many things for the three months before he died. Corrections on Henriettaś name and cancer (it was an adenocarcinoma, not an epidermoid carcinoma). Richard Nixon also launched the National Cancer Act into law and launched the War on Cancer.

Chapter 23: "It's Alive" in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot starts off with Bobbette Lacks at her friend Gardenia's house. Bobbette discovers that Gardenia's brother-in-law works at the National Cancer Institute. They engage in a conversation and find that they have a few things in common. When Gardenia's brother-in-law discovers that Bobbette's last name is Lacks, he tells her about the HeLa cells he's been working with. bobbette is stunned; she had no clue! Confused and shocked, Bobbette goes home and tells Lawrence (who then tells Day) that Henrietta is alive. They call Johns Hopkins, but the operator says there is no record of a Henrietta Lacks in the hospital. Lawrence hangs up, lost on what to do next. Yale is working on the first mapping of the human genome, and a physician at Hopkins named McKusick contacts Susan Hsu and orders her to get blood samples from the family, without their consent of what it is for. Years later, when Skloot confronts McKusick and asks if anyone tried to get informed consent, he says he's unsure, but perhaps there was a basic explanation. They were told that they were being checked for cancer, but when Deborah anxiously calls back, asking for her cancer test results, no one knows what she's talking about. An article is published, and Henrietta's picture is used without consent or permission. The family is yet again betrayed by medical professionals.

In Chapter 24: "Least They Can Do" of The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, a Rolling Stones article on HeLa and Henrietta is published by MIchael Rogers, and he contacts the family and is one of the few people who has been very kind to them. We are reassured that George Gey and Hopkins did not make money from HeLa, and that Gey didn't patent them. No money is given to the family once again, and we get a snippet of Deborah's diary, which is really sad and hits the feels. We see yet again the lack of education that the Lacks kids have. Henrietta is still being called Helen Lane, and Rogers' article is the first to tell the true story of Henrietta Lacks and her family. It's also the first time that the mainstream media had reported that Henrietta, the woman behind HeLa, was black. Henrietta's privacy is violated once again.

In Chapter 25: "Who Told You You Could Sell My Spleen" in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, we are introduced to John Moore, a very hard working man who is diagnosed with hairy-cell leukemia, a rare and deadly cancer that is killing him and inflating him. His doctor refers him to David Golde, a cancer researcher at UCLA, and Golde tells him that the only way to go is to remove his spleen. His spleen is over 22x the weight that it should be,
and after his surgery, Moore led an average life in Seattle. Every few months, he flew back to UCLA for checkups, where Golde took bone marrow, blood, and semen, he started to question why he was flying to LA if a doctor in Seattle could do this. Golde starts to bribe him in order to try to convince Moore to keep working with him. Moore gets even more suspicious after Golde sends him a consent form asking to grant rights to UCLA for his cell line or any other product that could be obtained from his blood marrow. John signs do, at first, scared to rock the boat, but when he is faced with that form again, he circles do not. Golde says that Moore must have circled it wrong and wants him to fix it, but he doesn't. Golde sends another form and tells him to circle I do. He gets persistent, and Moore discovers that he is the cell line Mo, and Golde has been lying and misusing him, even looking to patent his cell line. Moore’s cells produced rare proteins that at every useful and helpful, but if Moore had known this prior to the patent, he could have worked out a deal to sell them himself. People want to sell their cells and serums, and Ted Slavin was lucky to have an honest Doctor. However, Moores was not and he cannot sell the cell line because it would be a violation to the patent. People finally begin to realize what's wrong, and the Lacks family is oblivious to all that is happening.

In Chapter 26: Breach of Privacy in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, Deborah marries a mechanic names James Pullum, and she feels safe with him. After Pullum is called by the Lord to be a moonlight preacher, he and Deborah open a storefront church, and some of her burden is lifted. Zakariyya is released from prison, but in and out of jobs. He is unable to afford rent, and sleeps most nights on a bench or elsewhere. He is hostile and resentful against his father, but he notices an ad from Hopkins seeking volunteers for studies. Zakariyya volunteers, using the money to scrape by, getting meals, and sometimes a bed. Because of his name change, however, they never were aware that he was Henrietta’s son. The Lacks children file a lawsuit on the damage that was done to their lungs by Avesta exposure at Bethlehem Steel. They get their largest paydays (though still considerably small), and Sonny is put in jail, while Alfred seems to take the same path. Deborah kicks Alfred out, because he is stealing and on drugs. A book about HeLa is published by Michael Gold, in which her real name is used, but her medical records are quoted from, as is the autopsy report. No one in Henrietta’s family had ever seen the records, and Deborah is scarred by what she learns. Henrietta’s photo is also taken and used. Gold claims to not remember who gave him the info, and McKusick and Jones deny it. Laws today are more in depth regarding patient privacy than they ever were then.

In Chapter 27: The Secret of Immortality of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, research on the HeLa cell finally uncover how her cancer started, and why the cells never died. A German virologist named Harald zur Hausen believes that HPV-18 and HPV-16 caused cervical cancer. Today, there are over 100 strains, and 13 of them cause oral, cervical, anal, and penile cancer. HPV inserts its DNA into the host cell’s DNA, but then the HPV DNA is blocked, the cervical cancer cells stopped being cancerous. This lead to an HPV vaccine, and a Nobel Prize for zur Hausen. However, why this produced such monstrously virulent cells inside and outside of her body, scientists do not know. Cervical cancer cells are some of the hardest to culture, yet she thrives and destroys other cell lines. Henrietta’s family members have their own theories about why her cells grew so powerfully, and Howard Jones has never forgotten her tumor. HIV is also on its way to being stopped thanks to HeLa’s cells. HeLa is claimed to no longer be human due to the fact that its evolved and differentiated from Henrietta. The University of Chicago proposes that HeLa is deemed as their own species. They are still classified as human, and we learn of the Hayflick Limit; the number of times a normal human cell can divide before they stop growing and begins to die, but cancer cells can grow indefinitely. A telomere is a string of DNA at the end of each chromosome, that shortens just a little each time the cell divides, almost like time ticking off a clock. The telomere shortens with each division until nearly nothing is left and the cell begins to die. Human cancer cells contain an enzyme called telomerase that rebuilds the telomeres, allowing them to regenerate indefinitely.

In Chapter 28: After London of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, Henrietta’s story catches the attention of a BBC producer named Adam Curtis, and he begins making a documentary about Henrietta, which is the one that Rebecca watched in Courtney Speed’s beauty parlor. Deborah is excited and believes that everything will change, and refers to time periods in her life as before and after London. The BBC is persistent conducting many interviews with the family, and Roland Pattillo organizes the first annual HeLa Cancer Control Symposium, and makes October 11th Henrietta Lacks Day. He invites the Lacks family to join along, and they're very thrilled. However, there are some roadblocks. Sonny has extremely high blood pressure, and he nearly missed the whole event. Meanwhile, Zakariyya gets drunk on the minibars from his room as well as his father’s and Deborah’s. He lashes out in anger, and Deborah tries her hardest to ignore everything else as she talks on stage to the audience. We see a bit of her paranoia, because she's worried that there might be a sniper in the audience. After a researcher talks about cloning, she asks if it's possible to take DNA from the HeLa cells and bring her mother back, but the answer is no. Courtney Speed and another woman establish the Henrietta Lacks museum which seems great but upsets Deborah because she wants money for the family to go to the doctors and not for a museum. However, she helps on occasion. Sir Lord Keenan Kester Cofield is a con artist who likes to sue anyone and everyone, yet is very sneaky in helping the Lackses. He pretends to be a lawyer for them, and also a doctor. After he wants Henrietta’s medical records, Deborah discovers that he was a fraud from Doctor Kidwell. Cofield overruns Deborah's mail with many ridiculous legal documents, as well as Speed’s. They're spooked and anxious, and Henrietta’s recognition starts to go down the drain. Deborah also learns that Elsie was committed to a mental institution for the Negro Insane called Crownsville in Maryland, and she nearly had a stroke. Pattillo left a message on her answering machine saying he'd been talking to a reporter who wants to help and write a book about Henrietta and that Deborah should contact her. The reporter is Rebecca.

In Chapter 29: A Village of Henriettas in The Immortal LIfe of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, we find out that Deborah didn't want to talk to Rebecca for almost a year after their first conversation, but Rebecca would leave her messages on the voicemail and some updates. Finally, Deborah's husband called her back and says that the Lackses want to be assured that they will get some compensation, and they're tired of being cheated. Then, he hangs up, but Deborah calls back a few days later, and they meet at a bed and breakfast, where Rebecca gives her the FISH picture from Christoph Lengauer, and she's amazed by how beautiful it is. She then tells her that Christoph wants to say thank you and show Deborah her mother's cells in person. Deborah wants to, but not yet because she feels like she isn't ready. As they continue talking about articles and information, Deborah mentions that she thinks there's women in London that look like her mom because of an article she read about cloning HeLa. Rebecca explains to her that they cloned her mom's cells, but not her mom, and that "to populate a village of Henriettas" was a hyperbole. Rebecca tells her that McKusick wasn't ever actually testing them for cancer, he just wanted the samples for research on Henrietta's cells. Deborah is surprised, because she never knew that, but it all makes sense now. Rebecca goes to reach for Henrietta's medical records, and Deborah freaks out, saying that she "doesn't know who to trust".
