In years 5/6 I remember doing a lot around the topic of WW2. I particularly remember focusing a lot around Dig for victory and what that was all about. We would design things like the posters that helped to encourage the movement and to get people to grow their own food to help in hard times of rationing. It gave me a really clear idea of how people dealt with these hard times. For example we were shown how much rationing coupons people were given and how many was needed to buy certain food products. This aspect of History I found really interesting and is the main reason I remember about this topic in particular.

Primary school was over 20 years ago for me, but I do have some faint memories. In primary we dressed up in a Victorian maids outfit. We visited a well established castle and played the parts of Victorians for the day. Things included Making beds, cooking, cleaning. If I am honest, I just remember being scared the whole time as all the people who worked there, played the parts really well and it frightened me. Looking back now it is one of the only memories I have.

One of the things I do remember is learning about WW2 where we visited a museum where we experienced what it would be like for children living in this troubling time.
From primary school history, I remember a couple of topics we did. In year 3 we learnt about World War II. For this topic, I remember doing lots of hands on activities. For example; I made a doll (part of the toy section we did). We also had a tea party as an afternoon activity, where we all got to dress up and show and use the toys we had made. As well as this, I remember we did a performance all about World War II and performed it to the rest of the school and to our parents/careers and friends. I can still remember one of the songs we sung for the performance, and I remember being in the hall practicing. For the performance we got dressed up as well.

Another topic I remember doing is studying the Romans. We did lots of artwork related to the Romans, for example drawing their armour. I also remember writing lots of dairy entries about what we thought life would have been like for the different types of people living in that time (eg; as a slave, as a warrior). We also did a topic about the Victorians and we did similar work.

In addition to this, I remember studying about the history of chocolate and we go to go to Cadbury’s World. We had to write about where chocolate came from etc and made lots of fact files. We also go to design our own chocolate bars.

I worked in a primary school in my gap year, and the children really enjoyed ‘wow’ days where they would dress up as someone from the time they were studying, eg; as a Roman or a Victorian etc. and would have. A full day of history and doing activities around the history topic. In year 4, we dressed up as Romans and the children made clay lamps etc.

From primary school history I have positive memories about what I learnt; I remember a couple of topics we did.

My memories of History in Primary School: Once in primary school, we had a Victorian day and we all had to dress up in rags. Our sports hall was set up as a Victorian classroom, and we had to do handwriting and the 'teacher' pretended to use the cane to scare us all. Another time, we dressed up as Victorians again and went to an old Victorian House. We were all put into groups, for example I was a Cook, and had to prepare lunch for everyone. Other groups were Upper Class.

I also remember doing a play on the Tudors and a World War 2 play.

I remember learning about the Tudors and the Stuarts and particularly enjoyed learning about Henry VIII and his six wives. I recall being taught a rhyme to help remember the fate of his wives (divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived). Back when I was at primary school, many years ago, there was no internet so we used books to find out information. My favourite school trip was to the Weald and Downland open air museum where I was fascinated by the Tudor style houses, especially their 'toilets'!

Liv Deacon With History across any of my schooling I really struggled to engage with it as history was never my most loved subject I find it harder to remember dates, names and events and therefore have to try really hard to perfect the subject. This led to me not having the best experiences with history especially in primary school. I do have a few select memories of primary school history such as dressing up as a Victorian child and experiencing that for a day, learning about the monarchy and henry the 8th and visiting the natural history museum. i would say personally i dont have the best memories of primary school history but i hope to learn more and give my future students the best memories in history.

Throughout primary school, i remember having themed days. This would involve us to dress up or we would go to the local museums and spend a day learning about life.
One day, the school had hired some actors to play as both a viking/ancient Greek, who (linked with the dress up days) gave us certain activities like they used to do at the time (building viking boats, olymipcs)
I also remember having a 'pyramid competition' where we had to see who could build the best pyramid.

From primary school when I was learning history I remember learning about WW1 and WW2. This provided us with an insight into how Britain operated during the World Wars and how they would have to adapt to changes such as evacuees coming to stay with families. Another topic that we learnt about was when the Romans invaded Britain and the legacy that they have left behind today. I feel that history in my school was left behind at times and we would usually have 1 hour every couple of weeks or so of History lessons
