Her father, John Bottom, of Irish descent, was born on 14 June 1947, and died on 2 February 2010 in Fontana, California, and her mother, Arlyn Sharon Dunetz, born in Bronx, New York, on 31 December 1944, to a strictly Jewish family. They were married on September 13, 1969, in an impromptu ceremony, and some time later joined the Children of God sect and became missionaries, later travelling to Venezuela, where one of his sisters was born.

 

Joaquin, who was born in Puerto Rico, lived on the island until he was three years old. In 1978 he left the sect and returned to the continental United States, where the family changed his surname to Phoenix. John and Arlyn decided to encourage their children to develop their creative instincts. Because his siblings had nature-related names such as River, Rain and Liberty Butterfly, Joaquin decided to change his name to Leaf.

 

The family moved to Los Angeles from Puerto Rico. His mother began working as a secretary at NBC and his father became a landscape architect. Their parents hired an agent who eventually introduced the brothers to the world of acting.

 

Phoenix's first acting jobs were in advertising campaigns and brief appearances in two television shows in which he appeared with his brother River: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (in 1982) and Backwards: The Riddle of Dyslexia (in 1984). She made her big screen debut in the 1986 film Space Camp, and her first starring role came in the 1987 film Russkies.

 

He soon established himself as a child star in 1989's Parenthood, before deciding to retire from acting for a brief two years and move to live in Mexico and Cuba with his father.
