A compression fracture occurs when opposing forces are applied to a bone from both ends at the same time. For example, a compression fracture may occur in the spine when an athlete lands on their feet or butt from an incredibly high height. The impact from the ground and the weight of the falling body causes a compression fracture in the vertebrae. A coach should work with the medical team to help get the athlete off the field. Once that's done, the bone should be splinted in the position it was found. The patient will most likely wear a back brace and be prescribed painkillers. They will also be told to get some bedrest and physical therapy to help them move better and strengthen muscles around the spine. They should be completely healed in about 3 months
