Doing this concept map was a good brief introduction to disability studies. My students respected me because I respected them, and I continued to show that I cared about their wellbeing as well as their grades in the class. PBIS is really universally important among all ages: I even use behavior management systems in preschool where I teach. In my co-teaching lesson, I was able to allow my partner's detailed lesson to be the one we chose to use, and work with the mods I saw would best fit the student from my case study. Using my knowledge of that child's needs and disability, I came up with strategies that could help them adapt the lesson (a very in depth analytical approach to a large topic) that my co-teaching partner agreed would be beneficial to a student like the one listed in my case study. This is called Universal Design for Learning. I like the idea of using certain approaches to help one student with special needs and making them sort of become standard procedure for everyone in the classroom; it becomes a learning process in instructional method for everyone involved, and allows instruction to be more student guided based on the needs of the class. This is, unfortunately, not the special needs student whose work I had saved (Couldn't find the file), but one way I think a teacher--especially an English teacher--can identify special needs and issues with students is paying attention to their responses and using progress monitoring. For example, I can identify places in the student's work where grammatical and syntactical conventions are below grade level and where they may be struggling with something like processing or comprehension, just by looking at their written work.
