This stage is all about the baby being taken care of and feeling safe. If all the child's needs are met, then they will develop trust to those around them, whereas if they are neglected they will develop a mistrust.

My resolution for this was trust. This is because I had many people in my family around me to help take care of me and make me feel safe.

"In these early months, babies need to develop a balance between trust, which lets them form intimate relationships, and mistrust, which enables them to protect themselves."

During this stage children start to make their own choices and start making preferences. Children who are encouraged to be independent and make their own choices will develop autonomy. Where a child who is not allowed to be independent and make choices will develop shame and doubt.

My resolution for this was autonomy. This is because I was taught to be independent by watching my older sister and was allowed to make all of my own choices.

"Caregivers who view children’s expressions of self-will as a normal, healthy striving for independence and not as stubbornness can help them learn self-control, contribute to their sense of competence, and avoid excessive conflict."

During this stage children start to understand the power and control they have in their environment. Children become initiative when they are comfortable trying new things and moving on from their mistakes. Children who develop guilt feel more embarrassed trying new things and can think mistakes make them a bad person.

My resolution for this was initiative. This is because at that age I was very ambitious, always wanting to try new things even if I wasn't good at it or made mistakes.

"Children who learn how to regulate these opposing drives develop the virtue of purpose, the courage to envision and pursue goals without being unduly inhibited by guilt or fear of punishment."

This stage is all about learning new things and developing a sense of self worth. A child will become industrious when they have plenty of opportunities to learn and strengthen new skills. A child will feel inferior if they are not assisted and given oportuinites to strengthen their skills.

My resolution for this is becoming industrious. I would ask for help when I needed to and was confident in myself once I got the help I needed to achieve my goals.

"Developing a sense of industry, by contrast, involves learning how to work hard to achieve goals."

This stage of development is all about becoming independent and developing your sense of self. Teenage years are a time where someone will start to understand what kind of person they are and want to be in the future. Those who are not supported in discovering their sense of self might develop role confusion and not know exactly where they fit in life.

My resolution for this I feel is a mix of both. At that age I had some aspects of my life completely figured out, where other aspects I felt clueless and very unsure of myself.

"Adolescents who resolve the identity crisis satisfactorily develop the virtue of fidelity: sustained loyalty, faith, or a sense of belonging to a loved one or to friends and companions."

Those that do not have these strong connections may develop a feeling of isolation.

My resolution for this I feel will be intimacy. I have close relationships with friends and family, and hope to settle down one day.

"A man is not capable of real intimacy until after he has achieved a stable identity, whereas women define themselves through marriage and motherhood.

During this stage adults can choose to contribute to their community or not. Adults can be generative by mentoring youth, making commitments to others and contributing to the next generations. Adults who choose to be self-centered, don't improve themselves, and fail to get involved with others will become stagnant.

My resolution for this I hope will be generativity. I plan to be a teacher and a foster parent one day, and hope those things bring me a lot of joy and fulfillment.

"Commitment, the other aspect of identity formation, involves a personal investment in an occupation or ideology (system of beliefs). Commitments can be held after they have been deeply considered or after crisis, or they can be adopted without much thought put into them."

During this stage the elderly start to reflect on their lives. Adults who achieve ego integrity feel a sense of accomplishment, and feel at peace at the thought of death. Adults who develop ego despair feel regretful about their life and feeling like it was wasted.

My resolution for this I hope will be ego integrity. I hope that I am happy with all that I have accomplished in my life and do not become bitter in old age and can cope with the challenges of daily life.

"The effort to make sense of the self is part of a healthy process that builds on the achievements of earlier stages—on trust, autonomy, initiative, and industry—and lays the groundwork for coping with the challenges of adult life."
