Through these initiatives, I aim to cultivate an informed and ethically conscious learning environment.

An analogy that resonates with me is comparing AI to a calculator in the context of mathematics. Just as students in primary school are taught to perform basic arithmetic without calculators to train their brains for more complex tasks, the use of AI should be approached with a similar mindset. While AI can be a valuable tool for generating ideas, seeking feedback, and even acting as a mentor or peer, it cannot entirely replace the human touch in every aspect. It is crucial for students to understand the complementary role of AI and the importance of cultivating their cognitive abilities for more intricate endeavors.

As teachers, we must demonstrate to our students the ways AI can be used, but more importantly, we need to be critical of the information it provides.

AI can help the teacher to lower the amount of work but cannot take the teacher´s place. It´s always on the teacher to evaluate the purpose and the risks when it comes to using AI during the preparation of the lessons or during the lessons directly with the students.

The document provide us with some reflections that those of us that have been in charge of privacy issues and course design have been dealing with for a long time.

It is essential that we transmit this knowledge to all the learning community (be it teachers, administrators, learners or families of learners), as these issues do not end in the teachers' task. Creating spaces to train the community, reflect and reach consensus is a must if we want to incorporate AIs properly in the teaching-learning processes and environment.

Teacher has the main role in implementation of the AI tools in class.

There are some thinkg which has to be integrated as a part of evera implementation:

We should explain to students how AI tools are used, what data is collected, and how it impacts their learning experience.

We should be aware of potential biases in AI algorithms and take steps to mitigate them, ensuring fair and equitable treatment for all students.

The most important - Implement measures to safeguard students' privacy when collecting and using their data.

If we are familiar with them, we can predict and prevent ethically questionable situations.

Teachers should of course take active part in continuous professional learning on AI.

When designing the assessment tasks, I need to keep in mind the social and cultural background of the learners and provide criteria/rubric with lead to greater authenticity and reliability of the students’ work.

To increase awareness and community engagement on the use of AI and data in teaching and learning, instructional resources could be used that teach the concepts, applications and ethical implications of AI and data in a playful and interactive way and can thus help students develop competencies for the ethical use of AI and data, as well as actively participate in the digital society.

Bias and Discrimination

One of the most pressing concerns is the potential for AI systems to reflect or amplify human biases and prejudices, leading to unfair or discriminatory outcomes for certain groups of students. For example, an AI system that is trained on a dataset of predominantly white, middle-class students may be more likely to recommend courses and resources that are aligned with the experiences of those students, while disadvantaging students from other backgrounds.

Privacy

AI systems in education often collect and store vast amounts of data about students, including their academic performance, personal information, and online activity. This raises concerns about student privacy and the potential for this data to be misused. For example, data could be used to track students' movements, monitor their online activity, or create profiles that could be used for advertising or other purposes.

Transparency and Explainability

AI systems can be complex and opaque, making it difficult to understand how they make decisions. This lack of transparency can lead to concerns about fairness and accountability. For example, if an AI system makes a decision that negatively impacts a student, it may be difficult to determine why the decision was made and how to challenge it.

Human Control and Agency

There is a concern that the increasing use of AI in education could lead to a loss of human control and agency. For example, if AI systems are used to make decisions about student placement, curriculum, and assessment, there is a risk that teachers and administrators will lose their ability to exercise their own judgment and expertise.

Addressing Ethical Concerns

To address these ethical concerns, it is important to develop and implement clear guidelines and regulations for the use of AI in education. These guidelines should address issues such as bias, privacy, transparency, and human control.

It is also important to educate educators, students, and parents about the ethical implications of AI. This includes understanding the potential benefits and risks of AI, as well as how to identify and address potential problems.

Finally, it is important to continue to research and develop AI systems that are fair, transparent, and accountable. This will require a collaborative effort among educators, researchers, technologists, and policymakers.

A critical thinking, a thorough look and the student´s feedback are key to an appropriate, effective use of AI that really promotes student learning.

We should also teach students to question and analyze the ethical dimensions of AI applications, considering the potential impact on individuals, society, and the environment.

Conversations about the importance of fairness and strategies to mitigate biases in AI applications are also important to ensure that AI technologies used in teaching are inclusive and accessible to all students.

Someone could even conduct workshops and training sessions for teachers, parents, and community members on AI ethics, or create forums for discussions where community members can express their thoughts, concerns, and ideas.

Some risks must be considered, and somehow must be taken seriouly and/ or can be anticipated, suh as:

1. Algorithmic bias: AI learns from existing data, and if that data is submitted, the AI model can perpetuate this bias. This can result in systemic discrimination in a number of areas, such as criminal justice, hiring and lending.

2. Economic inequality: If AI adoption becomes uneven across countries or companies, it could lead to greater economic inequality. Those who have access and resources to utilize an AI effectively can accumulate more wealth and power, while others may be left behind.

3. Technological dependence: As organizations become more dependent on AI, there is a risk of technical failures or security issues that could have significant consequences. Poor implementation or mismanagement of AI can lead to serious problems.

4. Ethics and control: AI raises complex ethical issues, such as understanding the algorithms used and the transparency of decision-making processes. Additionally, there are concerns about who controls and holds the power to make decisions based on AI.

I think we need training on this. So I appreciate opportunities for professional development like this.

·         Is the teacher role clearly defined so as to ensure that there is a teacher in the loop while the AI system is being used?

·         Are the system processes and outcomes focused on the expected learning outcomes for the learners?

·         Is the system accessible by everyone (teachers and students) in the same way without any barriers?

·         How does the AI system affect the social and emotional wellbeing of learners and teachers?

·         Is access to learner data protected and stored in a secure location and used only for the purposes for which the data was collected?

To raise awareness and community engagement on the use of AI and data in teaching and learning, we can organize workshops, seminars, and discussions involving teachers, parents, students. By promoting open dialogue and collaboration, we can collectively navigate the ethical challenges to ensure the ethical integration of AI in education.

Some ways of applying Ethical guidelines in my classrom: making sure that the AI generated content is factual and not biased, providing equal access to AI tools to all students (for example, making sure that all students can use smartphones for a quiz), or ensuring that student data is safe by using tools that don't require registering.

Teachers and school administration should be properly introduced to possibilities of AI, its use, and etchics. Preferably something realistic. The guidelines sometimes sound like AI is more developed than it is (example, "Does AI clearly signal that it is a simulation and has no feelengs or empathy?").

Continuous training for the development of supervision and AI usage skills, along with fostering a culture of responsibility and digital ethics, will be a priority. I will promote the development of socio-emotional skills in students through AI technology, encouraging empathy, collaboration, and mutual understanding. Additionally, I will integrate digital ethics, empowering students to understand the ethical challenges associated with technology, promoting a more inclusive and responsible educational experience.

To increase awareness and engagement of the educational community regarding the use of AI and data in teaching and learning, I consider it essential to conduct regular training sessions and workshops for the entire educational community. This would involve addressing the benefits, challenges, ethics, and potential impact of these technologies, fostering a comprehensive understanding and informed participation.

Moreover we must understand how AI works in order not to underestimate bias.

By fostering open dialogue and promoting responsible AI usage, educators can empower students to become informed and critical consumers of AI-generated information, thus shaping a future where AI serves as a tool for enhancing learning rather than perpetuating biases and disparities.
