Cooperation during classes or activities from various projects is a good base for teaching values. Working in teams, sharing or planning together can help student learn and develop values such as: respect, solidarity, friendship, responsability. While working together the students can learn a lot from one another.

I think it sums up pretty well how values are worked in chool and in general in the everyday life of anyone. I like too the emphasis that makes when says "A child growing in a conflict ridden home is unlikely to be peace oriented". The family is very important to teach values.

I believe that teacher role nowdays is to show students the direction, and then let them find their own way. By that I mean that solving problems as teams, finding the best solution together helps students develop their creativity, encourage them to make their opinion about something, and at the same time to cooperate with their team, share, help, tolerate different opinions, compromise or defend their point of view. By working in teams we give students freedom of solving problems the way they think is the best and at the same time teach them how to work with others, how to cooperate. I believe this is the basis of values education.

Ester Degennaro-Italy. The Handbook is very interesting because the school has to be the place where you can build our future society based on true values. I love the statement that "every teacher is a values facilitator. It's true that we can focus the problem through co-curricular activities, only in this manner our students can aspire for values based living. Equality, respect, tolerance, and cooperation to reach a global level of peace.

To incorporate values in the classroom it takes time, a lot of enthusiasm, a strong desire to change the society and team work of all school employes. Introducing confilct situation to students can put them in such imaginary possible situation and preapred them to react in real life. Students need to have a time to speak up, they need a chance to give their point of view. More often of telling what not to do, we need to start telling the kids what should they do and what are they obligate to do. Often we forget that some behaviour children never seen from the older ones, and they have to learn it, just like poems by heart.

Something essential that i have read in the book is that the teacher can identify the values of each lesson, keeping the lessons’ objectives and learning outcomes in mind. So this is the most important aspect when trying to integrate values into curriculum. The efficiency of this action depends a lot on the teachers”s ability to find high quality teaching strategies and methods that could have an important impact on the children”s thinking and behavior(group work, role playing, moral exercise based on story telling). So the process is like a journey of self-transformation for both students and teachers, with the teachers becoming inspiring role models for the children in their care.

While conducting projects, the possibilities of integrating values are so much wider, but i think that it is important to involve parents into project activities,as family also has an important role when inspiring the children to assimilate and understand values.

Using enriched materials for teaching is not the only thing that matters; building a proper relationship with pupils is utterly important: children that can trust, be open, and discuss about themselves is a much more difficult task. Equally difficult is to develop a conscious behavior as well as the feeling of empathy for the others.

The values-education handbook offers some very practical guidance for teachers not yet acquainted with this well-orchestrated approach of teaching values. The lesson plans are careful to include assessment strategies and propose concrete activities in which often not only the school environment, but also the wider circle of family and local community are taken into consideration as addressees. What I particularly noticed is the need for a holistic school approach with an action plan that honours the repetition of teaching values in a spiralling way and the care and attention dedicated to change mindsets. So on page 10 it is said that good behaviour should not be motivated by 'fear' or 'compulsion' but by a sense of obligation, i. e. from a 'must consciousness to ought consciousness'. In due course, with increasing age, pupils will be cognitively more mature to realize that it is also their own wish to fulfil this 'ought'.

In addition values should be inculcating in each subject. What's more every school prepares an annual plan concerning on values. What I find worthwhile: being successful would demand not only possesion of technical and professional competences but as much the possesion of soft skills and life skills. There is an answer ( all are meaningful of course but) : Dys-functional families, increased crime and violence, effect of media and information overload.. This is exactly what I have in my mind nowadays. I think this is our major purpose of implementing VBE in our schools. The second part that I liked : " the ten basic themes may also form a part of Values Education in schools."
*Think positive
*Be compassionate and do no harm.
*Discover inner peace
*Learning to live together
*Resolve conflict non-violently
*Build peace in the community
*Be your true self
*Caring for the planet... so on.
They are the basic rules for peace in the world. If we do successful attempts to implement VBE, this may contbute a lot to WORLD PEACE.

Younger age pupils develop more of a cognitive knowledge of values, they are not that mature to internalize the fully, so the different stage of the pupil's development reflects different stage of the value development as well. They are to be ready to collaborate and get an input as well as produce an out put of what they have learnt not only as a concept but as a life skill too. The methods and techniques are different too. The teacher should have this in mind while integrating them on the classes.

I found the map with different levels of peace particularly inspiring and am thinking about using that in my year 9 Ethics class in which I will have to deal with an Ethics of peace in the upcoming months. Also, the thought that a value-based education covers ALL of the subjects taught in schools gave me food for thought because I think it is normally predominantly taught in subjects like History and Ethics. On top of that, I think one of the key factors for teaching values in the classroom is creativity as everybody can participate and there generally is no right or wrong. It thus promotes tolerance and compassion among the students.

I have read the Handbook for teachers. It was very interesting for me and also exciting. As for me there are a great number of suggestions to use and develop at the lessons. The proposed games for developing the self-esteem and the ability to form their own opinion are very interesting. This book shows the possibility to integrate the values into the educational process. I think that we can teach our students by using these games and different values can be taught by means of giving different situations at our schools.

It is a very useful book. Thanks a lot for sharing with us. I haven't read the whole book, but as many of us I have downloaded it too. We all agreed many times during these two weeks that 'Values education is not another subject", that is why I really like the Tree for Life as it shows how important it is to work together and how much we we can achieve together with parents.
I have decided to concentrate on Section 3 this time, as a mentor working with will-be teachers too, I was interested in the topic Engaging learners. The main idea I would like to draw the university students' attention is "A values centered approach in the classroom will add meaning to each class" .because " education and values go hand.in-hand. We are always examples. They mustn't forget it. This section shows the importance of many activities we use in school, in classrooms such as roleplays, groupwork, discussions, brainstorming etc. I was happy to read the Balloon debate here, we alsways try this task when we are talking about jobs for example.

Thank you very much for sharing this book with us. I find it very interesting. I haven't finished it yet but I have downloaded it and will surely read it all. I noticed that the first value mentioned in the preface of the book is spirituality, and I believe that it would help us greatly to incorporate that value in our school practices, as a starting point. I'm thinking of ways in which I can draw my students attention to the fact that we are spiritual beings, made not only of flesh and bones, and that as we nourish our body we also need to feed healthy food to our minds and hearts. As a yoga teacher I have learnt that the first two steps in yoga practice are Yama (developing positive traits) and Niyama (avoiding hurtful behaviour), do's and don'ts. Before even getting to do some poses students of yoga are taught to behave 'properly'. I like the idea that values based education is not so much about 'being good' as it is about 'being happy'.
I also loved the fourth section of the book, with all its practical activities that can be easily used in class but also all those suggestions about how to put those values into practice inside and outside school. That is a great way to bring school closer to the families and to the community and to make students aware they are being given necessary tools to shape their own successful future.

Thank you for sharing this book with us. I wish to comment on the section dealing with how to inculcating values through continuous and comprehensive activities. Fostering values in our students is not possible within a split second, it is an on-going process. Before the learners can make a judgment they have to know the respective facts (knowledge), then they can be confronted with conflicting situations in order to pass on a judgment, based on that judgment they will develop faith in certain qualities/values, and can take action. Only if they actively start living out a new value you can say that it has been internalised. Furthermore, we should not forget about our responsibilities as teachers/role models. If the students respect our authority and consider us to be a role model they will most likely follow examples we set.

lato’s Republic, Rousseau’s Émile and Dewey’s Democracy and Education – there’s a strong case to be made, as Dennis Hayes has, that these are the only books on education that teachers need to read.

But if I was about to enter the classroom as a teacher for the first time or was looking to improve my practice, I would probably want to read something with more practical advice on what I should be doing and, more importantly, on what I shouldn’t.

Much of what happens in a classroom is highly variable and hard to define, but over the last 10 years a wealth of books has sought to draw together evidence from other fields and provide a series of “best bets” on what might have the greatest impact on student learning. Here are just a few of them.

Why Don’t Students Like School? by Daniel Willingham

Understanding is remembering in disguise

In this eminently readable book, Willingham takes findings from cognitive science and applies them to the classroom in a straightforward and practical way. A central claim in this book is that while we are naturally curious, we are not naturally good at thinking and can only truly think about things we know. It also contains one of the best lines ever to feature in a book on education: “Memory is the residue of thought.”

The Hidden Lives of Learners by Graham Nuthall

Learning requires motivation, but motivation does not necessarily lead to learning

For Nuthall, three worlds exist in the classroom. First, the public world that is largely managed by the teacher and features easily-visible lesson activities and routines. Second, there is the “semi-private world of ongoing peer relationships” in which students foster and maintain social roles in the classroom. Last, there is the private world of the student’s own mind where learning actually takes. This book peels back the layers of those worlds and reveals many surprising findings.

Trivium 21c by Martin Robinson

In a true democracy all citizens share responsibility for their community

As a general model of what should happen in schools, this book has it all. Drawing on the classical triumvirate of grammar (knowledge), dialectic (questioning and debate) and rhetoric (expression), Robinson offers a model of education he wishes to see for his daughter and that seeks to draw on the past to anticipate an uncertain future.

Embedded Formative Assessment by Dylan Wiliam

The first fundamental principle of effective classroom feedback is that feedback should be more work for the recipient than the donor

Formative assessment is probably the most influential idea in schools today, and possibly the most misunderstood. In this book, the architect of formative assessment sets out the core principles of effective assessment but crucially applies them to the classroom with highly practical examples based on years of research in the field.

Seven Myths About Education by Daisy Christodoulou

If you only teach pupils using the knowledge they bring to the classroom, then you will reproduce educational inequalities

In this brief but explosive book, Christodoulou challenges several orthodoxies in education such as prioritising skills over knowledge, the claim that teacher-led instruction is passive, and why you can’t just look it up on Google. Whether or not you agree with everything in this book, every teacher should at least be acquainted with its arguments.
