Observation 9/17

Kate, thank you for having us! Before the observation, you asked us to focus on classroom management, and staying on track. Here is what I observed.

Glows:

Students are comfortable in your room. You interact with students in a positive and fun manner.

You incorporate opportunities for students to discuss during the lesson. You asked reflection prompts throughout the lecture, and incorporated prompts after the video, giving students to verbally reflect on the life of De La Salle. Student voice matters!

Students were engaged with the content - students were interested with the different elements of the lesson (video, lecture, discussion, etc.). You catered towards different learning modalities.

Grows:

You may have one in place already, but I think a seating chart would enhance the learning environment. There was a group of 3-4 students in my corner who were distracting each other throughout. A seating chart would alleviate that, while also giving students the opportunity to discuss with classmates they may not talk to on their own.

When it comes to staying on task, I wonder if students could benefit from a quicker pace. I noticed that we would remain on one slide for several minutes, with 90% of that going towards note-taking. I wonder if highlighting key points that students should have down would lead to a quicker pace. That way, students do not feel they need to copy down everything, word for word (FYI - I have this same issue with my freshmen. I will let you know if I find something that works for mine).

Good work! It was pleasure being in your class.

Kate- Thank you so much for having us observe. It was wonderful to be present in your classroom and observe ways in which you manage your classroom per your focus.

I really appreciated the way in which you utilized the guided notes in which you provided essential questions for the students, allowed them to think pair share, and even exposed them to video and visual modalities. This encouraged student engagement and integrated active listening. This tool supported you in classroom management by focusing student learning and sparking curiosity in a facilitated manner. I am hopeful that I can integrate this into my own teaching practice to best serve students in approaching holistic learning. Thank you again!
