The big picture of ELA I U5 is that students will focus on how to analyze and craft argumentative texts through rhetorical devices and tone. The arc of the learning is that we start with an intriguing question for debate that sets up students to build an argument for themselves about the topic, explores that topic through development of theme and plot, demonstrates through an article how to build an argument, then practice explaining how author's build arguments before having to write their own in response to a new argumentative article in the EOU exam. The TEKS are assessed through TDQs, multiple choice questions, and varied writing tasks.
