I am a teacher of Romanian language and literature at the Secondary School No. 7 in Petroșani, Hunedoara County. I have been working here for 32 years, I like my students and my colleagues, I like everything that is new and interesting. My students, with whom I work in this project, are 14-15 years old and they are wonderful, beautiful and curious children. I like reading, travelling, painting and having people with beautiful souls around me, because I am one of them. I am glad to be in this project!

Our learning environment is supported by a dedicated team of 28 certified teachers (10 for Primary and 18 for Gymnasium), many of whom are highly experienced in modern teaching methods and European projects like eTwinning.

The school is well-equipped: the newly installed IT laboratory supports our focus on digital literacy, and the classrooms benefit from interactive whiteboards. Students enjoy spending their breaks in our large library, which doubles as a hub for cultural events. Furthermore, we provide a Sports Hall and ample outdoor green areas for both physical education and practical environmental activities

Our mission is to foster critical thinking and prepare every student to be an active, informed citizen.

Among these is Nardò, a town of nearly 32,000 inhabitants, known for its historic center, its many districts, and its seaside resorts. One of Nardò’s distinguishing features is that since 1952 it has officially been considered a city: based on its territorial extension and population, it ranks among the largest centers in the province of Lecce. Located southwest of the Salento capital, it borders Copertino, Veglie, Porto Cesareo, Leverano, Salice Salentino, Galatina, Galatone, and Avetrana, a town in the province of Taranto.

A Brief History

Nardò is one of the most well-known towns in the province of Lecce not only because of its size, but also due to the richness of its services and activities. Its origins, however, are very ancient: in the caves of Uluzzo, an area within Nardò’s territory, archaeological finds dating back to the Paleolithic era have been discovered.

The city, in the strict sense of the term, was founded in the 7th century BC by the Messapians, a population particularly active in this area. A few centuries later, present-day Santa Maria al Bagno, now one of the most well-known districts, was conquered by the Romans, who seized its port. Nardò, then known as Neretum, became a Roman Municipium and remained so until 476 AD, the year of the fall of the Western Roman Empire. From that moment on, it became part of the Byzantine Empire.

Thanks to its strategic position and its many outlets to the sea, Nardò was long contested by various conquering peoples, who left numerous traces of their presence. During Byzantine rule, many Basilian monks of Eastern rite arrived in the city, deeply influencing its religious and cultural life. Around the year 1000, a violent Saracen attack destroyed much of the town. The Saracens remained until 1055, when the Normans arrived, accompanied by Benedictine monks who settled in the famous Abbey of Santa Maria di Nerito.

Over the centuries, dominations in Southern Italy followed one another rapidly. In the 13th century, the Angevins took control, and during the feudal period Nardò became a center of great importance under the rule of the Del Balzo family, who promoted its development and prestige. They were later succeeded by the Acquaviva family, remembered as particularly authoritarian rulers. At the beginning of the 19th century, the city was involved in the Carbonari uprisings: it was here that the Fenice Neretina was founded, a secret society that fought against the Bourbons in the countryside along the border with the fief of Copertino.

In 1861, Nicola Giulio was elected as the first mayor of the Kingdom of Italy. However, one of the most significant moments in Nardò’s history occurred during the Second World War, when the city welcomed about one hundred thousand Jews fleeing deportations, offering them refuge before their departure for Israel. During those years, Nardò took on a strong Jewish identity: a synagogue was established and even a kibbutz was created near Masseria Mondonuovo. For this extraordinary act of solidarity, the city was awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Merit in 2005.

What to Visit in Nardò

The long and glorious history of Nardò is still clearly visible today through the many monuments and artistic testimonies scattered throughout the historic center. Among the must-see landmarks is the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, built on the site of the ancient church of Santa Maria di Nerito. Commissioned by Pope Urban II and Count Goffredo, construction began in 1080. The building features a basilica layout with three naves and both round and pointed arches. Of great value are the frescoes, including Saint Nicholas blessing according to the Greek rite, the Virgin with Child, Our Lady of Grace, and Saint Augustine. Particularly impressive is the 13th-century crucifix made of black cedar wood, known as the Black Christ.

Also worth visiting is the Church of San Domenico, dating back to the 16th century and built at the behest of the Dominican monks. Its façade is striking for having been constructed in two different phases. Slightly later is the Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in 1580 on the remains of a medieval castle and considered one of the masterpieces of Lecce stone.

There are many other religious buildings of interest: the Church of Santa Chiara, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, Santa Maria della Purità, San Trifone, Sant’Antonio da Padova, Santa Teresa, and the Crypt of Sant’Antonio Abate, which preserves numerous frescoes in a distinctly Byzantine style. Lovers of Neoclassical architecture can instead visit the Episcopal Seminary.

Among the civil buildings, the Palazzo dell’Università, also known as the Palazzo di Città, stands out. Built in the 16th century to house the Mayor of the Nobles and the Mayor of the People, it collapsed following the earthquake of 1743 and was later entirely rebuilt in Baroque style. Over the course of its history, it also served as the seat of the Court of Lecce. Equally fascinating is the Sedile, a symbol of civic power and a testament to the city’s ancient splendor.

Not to be missed is the Acquaviva Castle, which housed the feudal family that ruled the city in the 15th century, as well as the many Coastal Watchtowers, built with the arduous task of defending the city and its territory from attacks coming from the sea. However, what most characterizes the Nardò landscape is undoubtedly the presence of masserie, both fortified and unfortified.

In recent years, there has been a strong re-evaluation of these ancient rural structures, once humble farming centers and now valuable witnesses to the social and economic history of the area. In this respect, Nardò represents an inexhaustible source: the masserie are numerous and spread throughout the surrounding countryside. Among the most significant are Masseria Abate Cola, Masseria Ascanio, Masseria Brusca, known for its dovecote towers, Masseria Le Stanzie, Masseria Torre del Cardo, Masseria Torre Mozza, and many others.

Finally, it should be emphasized that the vast territory of Nardò is also renowned for its extraordinary natural attractions. Above all stands the magnificent Porto Selvaggio Regional Natural Park, a true natural gem of Salento, where Mediterranean scrub, pine forests, and crystal-clear waters blend into a landscape of rare beauty.

Nardò's beaches are truly beautiful and represent one of the main tourist attractions in the area. Located on the Ionian coast of Apulia, they offer a variety of beaches with crystal-clear water.  Here we can see the coastal towers built to protect Nardò from the sea attacks of the Ottoman Turks. The Tower Santa Maria dell'Alto is located in the Porto Selvaggio and Palude del Capitano Park. It has a legend about a young noblewoman, forced to marry a man she did not love. She took refuge in the tower to escape her fate. Desperate, she threw herself from the top of the tower into the sea below. 

The local cuisine is full of dishes based on fresh seafood and local products. 

Nardò has a rich and complex history, with origins dating back to ancient times. The city was founded by the Messapii around the 7th century BC and was later conquered by the Romans, becoming an important urban centre that left visible traces of its past, such as the Roman amphitheatre and the underground cemetery.

The village's primary school was built in 1975, and the old school building was demolished in 1999 when a new building was constructed. During this time, education was temporarily continued in the old staff quarters building. In the 1999-2000 academic year, the new building became operational. It served as an 8-year primary education institution in this building. With the introduction of the 4+4+4 Education System, two institutions, a primary school and a middle school, operate in the same building. It has particular success in the girls' volleyball branch. Within the scope of the Fatih Project, our school's internet and technological facilities have been improved. Our school needs more classrooms and a cafeteria.

Culture and Tourism: The Bandırma Ferry Museum, Atatürk Monument, Amisos Hill, and Tekkeköy Caves are among its main tourist attractions.

Natural Beauties: The Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary, Kabaceviz Waterfalls, and unique beaches are famous.

Gastronomy: Bafra pide, Samsun pide, nokul, and tirit are among its most well-known delicacies.

Samsun is the most developed city in the region in terms of industry, education, and health, and is an important center for both historical and nature tourism.
