In 33 CE the Mediterranean was ruled by the Roman Empire. The Empire expanded into the Mediterranean, taking control of Sicily, Sardinia, Spain, Gaul, North Africa and then Greece. The Roman Empire lasted from 27 BCE to 1453 CE. The main language of Roman people was Latin, with Greek also being used by the upper class. People married at low ages and infant mortality was prevalent. In this time, Romans were of many different races and backgrounds. Transportation was both by road and by sea. Although the roads were very good, many people preferred the sea, as there were bandits and thieves on the roads.

Significance of the Conversion of Saul of Tarsus

Saul of Tarsus’s conversion to Paul was very significant. Saul was once a very brutal Jewish leader, he was in a high position of the Roman Empire, he was also taught about the Greek culture and the rabbis. Saul thought that Christians beliefs were incorrect, he then executed those who believed. His beliefs changed after he was stuck by a blinding light of Jesus. Christ said “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”, Act 9. Soon after he joined Christianity and spread the word of Jesus.

Paul's First Missionary Journey

Paul’s first missionary journey was the shortest, in time and distance out of the three. In the late Spring of 44 AD Paul and Barnabas began their journey. They then cross the island by foot and arrive at Paphos. After this they travelled through, Perga, Pisidian Antioch, Iconium, Lystra and finally Derbe. The missionary journey lasted from 44-48 AD. At Iconium Paul and Barnabas boldly preached the Gospel to many. Paul continued for a long time at Iconium, God approved their work there. At Lystra they preached the Gospel and saw a miracle performed. Paul and Barnabas refused to accept the worship of the people and directed them to the worship of God. The unbelieving Jews caused Paul to be stoned. Paul’s life was spared and he went to Derbe to preach.

What Paul's Letters were About

Paul’s letters were portraying the word of the lord. There are 27 books in the new testament, 14 of those books have been attributed to the great missionary Paul of Tarsus. The books are in the form of letters, traditionally these are given to an individual or a community. A few of the important letters are Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, and Ephesians. For example, Paul begins his letter by introducing himself, he then follows his introduction with a flattering greeting to the Roman church, and expresses his desire to preach in Rome someday. Paul begins with a discussion of the state of humanity before the possibility of salvation through faith in Jesus and says that salvation from sin is only possible through faith.

The Cultural Challenge Paul Revealed in one of his Epistles

Sometimes people say that circumcision is Biblical and is therefore to be recommended to Christians. It is true that circumcision can be found in both Jewish and Christian scriptures. However, it is not true that the procedure is recommended to Christians. The passage 1 Corinthians 7:19 references that ‘Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts.’ Paul preached that the lord would still have faith within you and physical features did not affect that.

Paul's Messages for Today

In Paul’s epistle (Philippians 2:1-5; 3:12-14; 4:6-9), he obtains the word of the lord, he also explains the importance of being humble and appreciative of the lord and others. In this letter Paul mentions how a person of God should live in peace. He says if these rules of simplicity are followed, the lord's peace will be with you. In this day and age society has become selfish and ignorant of God’s word, creating distress and little respect to the world. This is an example of why the word of the lord should stay apparent.
