While modernism itself was a rebellion against traditional writing, Poetry had a similar response but in the opposite direction. Instead of adding more chaos and different perspectives to their poetry, they chose to do less and less. Imagiste was coined by a trio of poets who came up with guidelines concerning how poetry should be made. The first rule states that the subject be directly spoken about, the second that there should be no superfluous language.

Modernism was a response to the changing times. Many writers moved to europe to attend bars and restaurants made just for creatives. The movement was also spurned on by the end of WWI which made people trust tradition even less. The fragmentation of modernism stories was to represent the fragmented world.

The 50s period saw the expansion of the American dream. Corporate positions became part of the dream, especially with the rise of conglomerations and franchises. This was also the age of advertising and had what was described as an "Automania" with people buying new cars en masse. Planned obsolescence became a common practice. Overall, this period began the American dream of today and the modern way we consume products.

https://www.murrieta.k12.ca.us/cms/lib5/CA01000508/Centricity/Domain/1270/The%20American%20Dream%201950s.pdf

https://envisioningtheamericandream.com/2012/05/09/introduction/

The American dream of the 1960s took an interesting turn. People began to think extraspectively, and the dream was no longer personal. Equality for all was the dream. The american dream was rocked by counter culture of anti-vientam sentiment. The American dream was defined by perhaps the most famous quote of the century: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." The american dream was only in its true form if people were truly judged by their works, and so it was the hope of the 60s.

Counter culture sprang up with socialist feelings, and the war was against socialism.

This era began the modern american dream with the details as we know them. New cars, suburban living, and the standard family were created here. Materialism grew. As my father quoted to me, a saying of the time was "The kid who dies with the most toys wins." Everyone wanted the latest and greates. More people had more, so to stand out, you had to have better and bigger. The corperate worker became the ideal, a father with a home wife and two children in a suburbian home.
