I am taking introduction to research methods right now and our second module is all about what research method is best for the type of researc we want and the type of response we want. If we want a percentage we would not ask people to describe their most memorable advertisement. There is qualitative, quantitative, and subsections within those types of research.  
Let's say we want to find out if people respond more to advertisements with a jingle or without a jingle. We may first ask people if they can remember any commercial and why. Then play for groups a commercial with a jingle then one without and see which group remembers it better. No matter what someone wants to know it is always better to do more than one type of research. So sociologists can conduct empirical research which is the research we usually think of when we think of research. Or we can construct a theoretical base. They usually work hand in hand with eachother. There are three fundamental theories. Symbolic interactionalism where humans have a self, people construct meanings, and what others think of you. Then there is functionalism where society is a machine with many different parts. Those parts must work together in order to be successful. The last theory is Conflict theory which is basically that there are not enough resources, which sounds like capatilism where one group has more than other groups. 
How to do research. This biggest part of research is that it must be replicable, it cannot be some cosmic event that happens once then it's done. No matter what type of research is done there must be a way for other researchers to replicate it because the whole point of research is to debunk your theory. I love research methods hence the reason I'm taking an entire class about it and even before I took an entire statistics course for researching. My favorite research methods are surveys (I used to have to do one every week) and participant observation. As I am typing this I am wearing a black lives matter shirt because the disparity between blacks and whites in the justice department is not okay. Knowing that a white man with a criminal record is more likely to be hired than a black man without a criminal record isn't surprising. 
This is just talking about the inequality after getting out  of prison, we can still talk about how there is more people of color even being incarcerated. Black neighborhoods are over policed so of course they have higher rates of crime, and white perpetrators are undercharged so of course they have lower rates of crime. 
We can talk about mass incarceration and how the entire justice system needs to be reformed and the police need to be defunded. The police itself stems from slave patrols so how are we supposed to expect the police and even society to treat people of color fairly when our entire system was created to do exactly the opposite of that.

This place is a very small place and everyone usually already knows eachother. The baristas knew the regulars and even some of the regulars knew eachother. They would say hi to each other, but the space is extremely friendly. Almost everyone gave me a smile when I passed. You coul tell who was there to use the internet and get work done though. They would have earphones in and did not really look up at people. This coffee shop had a lot of older people, like retired people. There was a grown man smoking at the table next to me and an older couple at the other table. And there was one young person on their computer probably doing work. The people who simply passed to just get a drink were younger people. Growing up my grandma always told me to never leave the house in pajamas. I was always curious as to why because they were just pajamas, but then I got older I realized it's because we should care about what other people think about us. We should never dress that way because people will look down on us, but then that will affect our sense of self. We may start to think "yeah I am lazy" because that is what other people think of us.

We act certain ways based on our circumstances also known as our stage. Our entire lives we are performing and we don't even acknowledge it. When I am with my girlfriends family I want to present myself in a good way and always go in appropriate clothes and make sure I have my hair combed back and never curse and make sure to not be too touchy with my girlfriend. That isn't how I actually am, just ask my girlfriends I wear crop tops and ripped pants all the time and I curse like a sailor and I usually just put my hair in a bun if I even brush it. But I give off a certain person and a certain impression on her parents because that's all life is. Changing aspects of yourself in order to get the impression you want. 
It's the same reason people tell you not to slouch at job interviews and to dress well because although you might not always look like that you want to make a good impression. We are all actors on a stage and the stage is just socializing. How I dress for school is not how I would go to a wedding, it's also why we put on heels when trying to look nice, it's because we want people to see us a certain way. One time I was watching Brooklyn 99 and Jake was dating a coroner and she was supposed to be weird because she liked for him to be cold and to be still (the show was making a joke about necrophilia) but after I watched that show I realized I have never seen a positive portrayal of a coroner/funeral director/people who work with bodies. Their either portrayed as necrophiliacs or as cold people who are just overwhelmed with sadness. This got me to thinking of other stigmas. 
Being a sex worker is frowned upon and people think very rude assumptions. But they are still people who just happen ti be sex workers. There is a song going around for people who work in unconventional jobs and the lyrics are "if im asked asking by a stranger what I do I usually end up telling a lie because there's too much to get through". So now when you say you're an accountant to younger people they will assume you have an unconventional job because of that song. 
Basically don't judge people, jobs are jobs. Usually just a way to make money. As someone who doesn't like their body and is extremely insecure I never went to the mall for fun. I never bought clothes for fun. Shopping brought me an intense discomfort and even to this day triggers me and I can't shop in stores without planning ahead and having coping mechanisms ready for myself. Shopping isolated me and during middle school all my friends just wanted to go to the mall and window  shop. It was relaxing and fun for them which I never understood. 
But if I move away from my main thinking of shopping and shift into a new day and age where online shopping is readily available for us I don't have a sense of discomfort. If I know my size I can just pick what I want then it gets here and that's it. If I want something I don't have to wait in line or even pray that they have it in store because I can just look online. Hitler was a monster" but that is our hearts and opinion speaking. It has nothing to do with the brain and how we learn from the time we're born to obey those in charge. The experiment it talks about in this chapter is one I learned of in my Research Mehtods class. The sujects didn't necessarily like giving the shocks, but they did anyway because the researcher kept telling them to go. In one instance a man asked "whose fault is it if he gets hurt? I don't want to do that" and the researcher told him that he was at fault and it was all him. After having the responsibility shifted the man continued to "shock" the learner. 
It goes to show that after a shift in responsibility we don't feel as bad doing something. That's why the nazis could continue because they weren't at fault. It was hitler or whoever they were reporting to.
I have an example, I try to use less plastic, but sometimes I do use straws and my girlfriend gets mad at me (she is an environmental science major) and I say that they're already made so it's not my fault. I'm just using them. When I was in middle school I had an android while all my friends had IPhones. They would always joke about how I turned the groupchat messages green and would even have groupchats without me. Finally came the day that my sister was gonna buy herself a new phone, so I asked her if I could get an IPhone. She asked me why, and at the time I just told her that it was because IPhones were just better. I knew it was because I just wanted to fit in. I just wanted to feel like my friends. My sister got it for me (though it brought our phone bill up). 
Getting this phone showed that I belonged. My friends might have been more excited than I was. The first thing they said was "yay now we can have blue messages and can facetime". It worked, it officially made me part of the group and they would give me phone cases and now I could take pictures because my camera quality was no longer shit. 
I saw it worked, but it only worked until the next IPhone came out. I couldn't afford to get the new one. So all my friends upgraded while I had a cracked outdated phone. Treat everyone the same and make everyone feel happy and taken care of. We are taught this so that no matter where people go whether it be our starbucks ore a different one the customers get a starbucks experience.
The starbucks experience is one that was created by our consumer economy, you can't experience a brand yet we all know what a starbucks should be and what to expect. Chains are the worst to work for. My cousin who works at a completely different starbucks could walk into my starbucks and know where everything is and basically just work there like it was her store. Chains don't allow individuality because you can't be original and blend in with the rest of the stores in the chain.
 I only work part time so that is about 25 hours a week. I get paid more than minimum wage, but I don't get any benefits. I don't get insurance or even help for insurance. The biggest benefit I get is that I get free spotify premium. I go to school full time and work and do side hustles and I still can't afford an apartment by myself. I have been the person to pay with every cent they can find because it was all they had. I have slept in cars and was supposed to be homeless (if it weren't for my grandmother letting me move in).
 The thing is she gave herself  a car as well, most people don't have cars and can't drive themselves 45 minutes for work. A lot of people have kids too, she was just living alone. She isn't truly getting the experience because she knows that after this one shitty month it'll be over. I don't even know if I can transfer because I can't afford it. I don't have a car right now because I can't afford to get my car fixed. It's shitty
I have this customer who comes in everyday and gets a frappe and it's 5.25, everyday he pays with a roll of nickels that is $5 and a quarter. He pays that way all the time and he literally nickel and diming it.

I work at a starbucks and when people aren't ready I found that it annoys me, my reason for being annoyed is that "the menu is the same every time, they should already know what they want. Especially if they already had to wait in a line". Even on the Mcdonalds part I feel like the workers expect efficiency from the customers as well. 
People also think that because there are many machines that the job is easy, but a job is still a job and things are still gonna take some time. But in regards to the actual question, the simple answer is yes. They should get the $15 an hour, fast food work may be less desirable, but it is still a job tha has hard aspects. The only bad thing is that with the price of labor going up the price of everything around will go up as well, inflation. It SHOULDN'T go up, but it does. 
The biggest factor that might discourage the possibility of unionizing is the possibility of being fired. It's not legal but companies do it and it instilled fear within people. People want the jobs that the unionizers have so they fire them and get people who aren't part of the union. One would be on a scale of 1-10 how much do they understand the material. Another question would be how they did on their hw, what score they got. Finally and the least important is the score on their test. Tests aren't always great ways to measure something because some people just aren't good test takers. But it could still help us understand whether a teacher is good or bad. Just a couple days ago I was in a zoom class and my teacher had given us a problem. I did the problem, then one person said there wasn't enough information and then everyone started saying that there wasn't enough information. I had done the problem and knew I was right. I knew that they were wrong and my teacher asked me what I thought and I said "i don't know" because I was worried about being the only different one. I didn't want to be the only person with a difference answer.
It reminds me of the experiment where it was a group of people and only one person was being experimented on. They tested exactly what group conformity would do. The joke that everything Americans have is from China, and while to most it is just a joke, there is some truth to it. 1/2 of the clothes I chose were made in China, this is different because 50 years ago nobody would have wanted anything to do with the communist country. But now, money is so much more important to Americans that they are willing to go out of country just to save money. 
The standards for our country have changed so much, and by even buying these clothes I am supporting something I don't believe in. I grew up poor and even now would describe myself as poor. There are people who I grew up with whose parents would tell them they could only get the best job. That they could do better.  When I went to Lincoln all of the kids would look at my beat up ugly car that broke down too often and judge me. I could tell they were put off by the look on their faces and the fact that no one wanted to ride in my car. When I would hang out with my friends that lived on the south or east side and were in the same economic boat as me they were awed that I even HAD a car. They would ask me for rides and tell me I was lucky to own a car. 
Poor people give way for rich people. We are the backbone if society yet wew are expected to accept the worse. Why is my family, who lives in the ghetto, be struggling to pay our water bill while people who can afford to live in lincoln, off alexandria, not have a water bill because they have well water. But after reading this chapter it opened my eyes. To me, starbucks was never a place for fancy people because by the time I was born it was mass consumed and on every street corner. But now that I work there I realize that I do judge people who don't know the name of our sizes, I automatically think "they obviously don't come here often" and there is problem to that. It means that I assume that everyone can afford to go there often because shelling out $5 per drink is ALOT of money. I also realize that as a kid when I saw a fellow student come into school with Starbucks I would be insanely jealous because in my mind it meant that they were cool. 
Now that I'm older I realized that I look down at Starbucks, I often make comments about how it isn't a real coffee shop. I make comments about how I drink real coffee and go to "real" coffee shops. I drop barista words and know the proper terms for things and think I'm better because I know these things. Which is inherintely the problem. I even say that coffee from starbucks isnt real coffee and it's basically water. I think I know better than the people who drink starbucks daily. I knew college was in my future, but only because my grandparents made it abundantly clear that they would make sure I do better than them. They came from Mexico to allow us to have better futures. College wasn't an option, it's a requirement. The only catch is that it must be a major that can instantly get a job or make money. None of the follow your dreams bullshit that many of my classmates were told. My friends were told to choose something they were passionate about, but I  had to be realistic. If I wanted the chance to rise up then choosing wisely would do me good. I never did estra curricular like dance or gymnastics because my family was worried it would distract me from getting good grades and in turn I would not be able to go to college. 
In order to go to college and to even afford clothes for school and so on I didn't go to the dentist for years. I never even had a primary care doctor. All of my family's money went to school and if we didn't need the doctor right then and there then it wasn't important. It got to a point where I couldn't see in class anymore because my glasses were 4 years old and obviously did nothing for my vision. There is old money which is the top tier upper class and those people look down on everyone else. Those are the ones who create the boarding schools and the ones who hire private music tutors. Then there is new money which is a subsection that is growing exponentially. These people do not have all the connections of the old money people, but can still probably afford the same things. 
No matter which section you're in, there will always be a set of rules that one must follow.  When reading the chapter the person was talking about how a certain race was good at basketball because they were sneaky, and their height helped. I instantly thought it was talking about black people because that is the stereotype that is put on today, so to read that it was Jewish people really confused me. It is not a connection I am used to seeing. 
The chapter also talked about how sports is used as a means of assimilation and it truly is. My very mexican family who does NOT watch football every sunday ALWAYS celebrates the Super Bowl. We get together everywhere and make super bowl food while watching the game. It reminded me of the movie The Perfect Game because the boys from Mexico were gonna play in the US and I remember the scene where the coach is saying a certain time didn't work because that's when they had their siesta. I remember that all the Americans were confused and didn't want to change the time.

I don't think being color blind is a realistic thing. Of course you're gonna see color, it's a way to connect with someone when you know you guys have something in common. But more than that, it's something to be proud of, it shouldn't be hidde because of course being white, black, asian, latinx, etc. is different. That's just a fact. But when people say colorblind what they should mean is that despite their race and their upbringing it should not affect any opportunites. That despite being colored they are still equal. I would agree with this if it weren't for the fact that everytime I've taken an AP exam or when the census comes and I have to check off my race there is no Mexican or hispanic option.  I never really understood the difference between race and ethnicity because on those same questionnaire it would ask me if I identified as latino an if that was my ethnicity. I always thought they were one in the same because I would answer that question and then choose "none of these options" for race. So what is race? Race is maybe where your family is associated with? Like what place is your family most heavily associated with like Mexican or Irish or Canadian and so forth. But that doesn't seem right either because there is no American race from what I know.
After searching it up, race is stupid. It is a group of people that have a shared physical or social aspect. It is socially constructed and it is a way to keep people apart and have a them and us mentality. The options in the census are like white, black, native hawaiian, and native american. Those are groupings that are usually made for racism.
Tangent why did it never occur to me that racism stems from race because it literally just about physical attributes and now I'm shook. My mom told me that I preferred dress up toys like dresses and purses and of course anything with swimming as we had a pool outside. She also said that since her favorite were books for us that we had a lot of books. That was her favorite thing to buy for me. During the early time of my life I was middle class and so this makes sense. The deprivation that our book talks to us about is what my mom would do, she would buy us mountains of books. And based on the toys I did gravitate towards I would say that I very much followed the lines of my expected conformity. I couldn't tell you if it was expected and pushed on me or if I naturally would have gravitated towards the more feminine toys.
On the other hand my sister was the first child and my mom told me she was very tom boyish. She said that she preferred trucks and action figures, especially buzz light year. She wanted to dress up as spooky things for halloween while I wanted to be a princess and fairies and things of that nature. 
When my sister was growing up my family lived in the fields in french camp, my mom was still in college and my dads business had barely begun. She was typically lower class and so she did a lot of out door things and made herself busy with what she could. When I was born we had moved to the Lincoln area and so now my sister was put into a whole new set of expectations. By todays standards and expectations I am everything a woman shouldn't be. I have acne, which is not silky skin that is seen in the magazines or on TV. I hated and still hate my acne because I think I am less worthy when I have it. I'm not just unbeautiful, but I am ugly. I am brown and especially in the summer I get extremely dark, which is not the complexion people aspire to be. Even now I want to be lighter when I shouldn't be because that is completely wrong. It is internalized racism that is instilled within me. But most of all I am fat. Fat is not a dirty word, fat does not inherently mean ugly. But in our society they are basically synonyms.
So by standards I am ugly. But why? Acne is normal, skin tone is not something you can control. and fat is not bad, even now I try diet after diet and have an eating disorder but the thing is since I'm big then I obviously can't have an ED. Or I look good because I lost some weight. Because four years ago during the height of my ED was my prime and I should try to get back to that.

Take a look at the show Ugly Betty, Betty who was competent and smart and overall a great employee was often looked over or ridiculed because she was "less appealing" than her coworkers. And only after she became "beautiful" did she start to prosper and get big and find a great job. It shows the importance of beauty and looking presentable. 
On TikTok it was proven that if you were plus size you were less likely to get on the for you page than your thinner counterparts. Your content could be amazing, but they restrict those that don't automatically fit in the beauty world.
We can even look at interviews, you have to dress and up and look nice. If you don't look presentable you won't get the job. That includes doing your makeup, wearing nice clothes, and just having a nice physical appearance.

Right now everything is Christmas themed so I did need to do some digging. It was a little weird to me that everything wasn't clearly seperated, but I think it would be more clear had it not been christmas season. 
The more I checked there was a section for toy brands. I noticed that brands that mainly targeted boys used the colors red and black and yellow while female targeted brands mainly used white and pink and purple. It was a noticeable difference that kids could probably notice. It is the colors we usually associate with each sex. 
Looking even further I wanted to see where I could get boy toys and girl toys. Then I saw an application that said "Find the Perfect Toy" and the first question asked is gender. The very first question for a toy is gender, showing that there are toys for each gender. But something that Target did that I found surprising was that the options were BOY, GIRL, GENDER NEUTRAL.

The amount of men I saw I could count on 1 Hand. There were 2 boys in all the photos I sifted through and even then it was guys who are described as "feminine". It was James Charles and Manny MUA. It was 2 boys with makeup on and who people usually hate on because they do such "feminine" things. Other than those 2, all the rest were female. 
My very first picture was of Selena Gomez who is technically not white, but is very white passing. I think that is a major thing to take into account. Beauty is for those who are white or white passing. I was genuinely surprised with how many POC I saw. My second picture was of a muslim woman with a hijab on. Of course she was beautiful, but I was surprised that she was my very second picture considering how people would not usually see muslim women as beautiful. 
I was very surprised to see that a little under half were women of color, the pictures were mainly of white women and black women. 
One thing I could notice right away was that there are no plus size people. I kept scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. I was told through these pictures that plus size people are not beautiful. I am not beautiful. Weddings aren't made from love, people think it is, but it's not. That is why so many little girls are able to imagine their wedding so easily despite not knowing who their spouse would be. 
But weddings and marriage are so ingrained into our society that if anyone questions it we automatically assume that they're just bitter or they haven't found the right person. That is why gay marriage was so important because it is so important to our society that not being able to did say something. It was a difference and it was because they expected the gay to find someone else or do it the proper way. The perfect family is made up of 1 mom, 1 dad, and 2 1/2 kids. That is the nuclear family. That's now though. I come from a mexican american family and mexican families tend to follow certain rules and have a set way of life. Even now our family has expectations. My cousin who is 24 has had a boyfriend for 2 years and yet our family would disown her if she moved in with her boyfriend before getting married. My other cousin just got engaged and hasn't lived with her partner. They all still live with their parents because that is what is expected, you only leave the house when you go to college, but then you come back and you leave once youre married. These thoughts might seem out of date and I think they are and I dont agree with them one bit, but it's what it expected. Sex isn't even on the table (despite the fact that we know they are sexually active) it's a shameful secret. Even after marriage these standards are not forgotten. The wife is in charge of the kids, even though both parents work, it's on us as females to keep the kids in line. My family taught us to serve our dad, boyfriend, any male we had before ourselves. I get made fun of and told that I won't find a husband since I don't know how to cook. The standards of society in the 1800's still bleeds into today. Despite knowing that white weddings don't really mean anything and are a capitalistic concept created so that people can shell out more money; I can't help but want that extravagant white wedding. I can't help but want that big white dress and have a nicely decorated venue. 
The reason I have this fantasy is because as kids girls are always shown princess movies or romance plot lines that show us that our lives will be changed when we meet the boy of our dreams and the happy ending is a wedding. A marriage is all we need to be happy and for a long time I believed that. Granted I have a more realistic dream and don't want anything as big as I imagined as a kid. 
Weddings mainly show who can have the most extravagant dress or ring or have better food. I mean, I agree, I would say the same, but in the event of survival or in dire need most people would do whatever it takes to live. And like the team that crashed in the Andes, that might include human flesh. 
If in the beginning of time humans deemed it okay to eat one another and to eat the dead and it was something common then we wouldn't think it was so bad. We would find it normal because what we deem as normal is only normal because it is what we're used to. Canibalism is only not okay because we say it's not, but if we collectively as a society said it was okay then we would have human flesh in restaurants and grocery stores. 
I can say that I think I would never resort to that. I only think that because I don't even like eating animal meat. Prisons are inherently evil, they're supposed to be about reform but they are holes. There is nothing that actually helps incarcerated people, they just take them away from the public eye. The prison complex is just corruption. You can think of the Stanford project, where students were given either the role of guard or prisoner. The guards were not given any rules and were told to keep order in any way that they choose. After only a few short days the guards abused the system and would beat the prisoners. Whether it be the label on our clothes or the label of whether we're straight or neurotypical or anything else. The most important is the label of whether we're sane or not. Once labeled as crazy our word means nothing, we constantly have to beg to be heard. If you're labeled as bipolar all of a sudden you're emotions aren't valid because it's not you it's your illness. Everything is written off due to the mental illness. If you are labeled as schizophrenic like in the article then you're just crazy. Even on meds you are unreliable. That is because of the stigma surrounding mental illnesses, it's something we don't understand so it must be written off. I was in crises and I saw a lotttt of people that were "crazy". There was this one guy who had no filter and would groan so loud it would wake me up. He would groan and complain loudly and would basically have no respect for others if they were sleeping or reading. He broke the unspoken rue of keeping to yourself, don't make a scene. He was a full grown adult and we would expect him to understand what was expected in public. 
If we want to take about someone not in a mental asylum then I have someone else. 
The year of 2020 has been a strange year, a global pandemic has taken over our lives. In an effort to slow down coronavirus health officials have asked us to wear masks in public. Wearing a mask now is something that is common and public courtesy. We expect people to wear masks when in common/ public areas. Last week I was in the hospital and there was a man there that kept taking his mask off. He kept complaining and taking it off then putting it back on.
