What struggles have they gone through to become a nation-state?

The struggle in becoming a nation state is that they were previously owned by Russia and control was constantly changing with the Soviet Union and its collapse. There are big populations of different ethnicities. The main two are Russian and Ukrainian. The waterways, including the black Sea, and access to it have been a problem. This is a problem because with Ukraine's control of the peninsula and its waterways, the Russians don't have access to it. Russia also have problems with trade routes and travel with other countries.

Will they ever succeed in their quest to become a nation-state?

They will most likely not succeed in becoming a nation-state because there are a lot of historical ethnicities. The Crimean Peninsula is made up of Russians, Ukrainians(at the highest percentages), Tatars being muslim, Belarusians, Armenians, and others. Russians and Ukrainians are the most populous ethnicities in the Crimean Peninsula. In order for it to become a nation-state it would need to consist of only one ethnicity. Since there are such high percentages of each ethnicity, this is very unlikely to happen.

Who has control over the Crimean Peninsula has gone back and forth between Russia and Ukraine. Currently Ukraine has control over the peninsula but Russia wants to take control back. History of the peninsula has dated back to 1783 when crimea was under control of Russia after they defeated the Ottoman Empire. 1954 the soviet government transferred crimean peninsula to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.
