The mood for the audience is a lot more shocking, this is the first time the reader hears of Nathan's death and it's jarring. His death is very violent and surprising for the reader.

Rachel is talking and her tone is annoyed/jealous that Leah can get away with standing up to her dad.
"Which was fine and dandy for her, I guess if she wasn't going to get punished for it!" This shows Rachel's jealousy. 

Both of these lined up.
