The Hero’s Journey

The Hero’s Journey according to the lecture's mimics people’s journey through life. Movies that were made based on hero adventures according to lectures were, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings. One of my favorite movies was Clash of the Titians which I never thought of as a hero’s journey until I learned it in our lectures. Based on what I have learned about pictures having heroes, it will make me watch movies open minded with critical thought skills. I also learned in our lecture that the hero’s journey has three major parts to their story. One is the departure, Initiation, and the return. To sum it up, the hero goes out on an adventure, meets a supernatural aid, a guardian struggle with challenges, acquirer's wisdom and returns home. Kendrick Lamar’s album, Good Kid MAAD City can be consider as a story about a Hero’s journeys. After reading the words to this album, I decided to listen to the lyrics as well. Listening to Kendricks words' help me paint the pictures of the life he lived and was able to connect the story he tells, to the hero’s journey. Kendricks tells us about the challenges he had to face while growing up in Compton were drugs, murders and daily violence was considered as a normal part of life. Living in Compton and being a minority has many disadvantages. In one of his song about “getting money” gives you a clear picture of the peer pressured he had face along with any bad influences he had to learn how to overcome. After reading and listening to Kendricks story, his life adventure starts in his 7th grade English class. His supernatural aid was his English teacher. One could say that the teacher was also the one who was instrumental in the threshold of his life which had inspired him to love poetry. Kendricks temptations and challenges were drug as well as gang affiliation and taking part in illegal activities to make money. Not to mention him being introduced to selling drugs at an early age by a family member who is supposed to help guide you in a positive direction. Another aide to his story was when his dad told him about the mistakes he made in life and wanted him to be different from him. Kendrick's father wanted him to learn from his mistakes so he would not make the same ones. I see his transformation as being the time he saw Dr. Dre and Tupac making the video of California Love. This was his turning point and from then on with the knowledge of his poetry writings he knew what he wanted to do with his life and that was to become a rapper. Kendrick makes mention of this in several of his albums. He got his first break as a rapper when he got a record deal with Top Dog records. After being with the label he begin to push for the better, he changed his stage from (Kdot) to his real name. The gift of the Goddess came once he signed with the Aftermath label and Dr. Dre.

Kendrick Lamar, through his music is pointing out the difficult challenge young black boys and girls face while growing in a life of poverty with not real chance to climb out of poverty. People of color face a many of obstacles and he hopes through his music that he could inspired and encourage hope to people who are facing what he had face in life. He also tells you no to let the world define who you are and what you will be based on where you came from.

Poetry

I have chosen to analyze the Female Voice of the play list. The reason I have chosen these three songs was that it showed some form of women being the dominate one in the relationship thus turning the table on men in some since.

My first choice is the song Formation by Beyonce one of my favorite artists. I believe. This song is about a women female empowerment. The song starts off by accusing her haters for not knowing what they are talking about in that they are saying she is associated with illuminati, which is suppose some secret society. She is looking gorgeous in her designer dress. She is proud of her African and Creole roots not a shame of her hair texture and proud of the way she looks. She refers to an old cliché. “You can take the person out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the person. She means that yes, she is rich, but she still falls back to her roots. Slay means that she has succeeded, conquer, and dominate something. She is calling on all women to get into Formation and Slay. What is also interesting in this song is that she is turning the situation a rounding by showing that women can be dominant when it comes to relationships with men. The women are the ones providing the benefits after being satisfied in bed and then he is rewarded with dinner and a shopping spree. The song is saying that women can be dominators too.

My second son is Love is Blind by Eve. The is a powerful song about being in love with a person who does not give you the same love that you are giving them. This song is saying that love is blind because it covers up all the bad that the person is doing to another person while claiming to love them. She is upset that her friend Is being mistreated by the man she loves. Although she has never met her friend's boyfriend, she knows she does not like him because of the way he treats her friend. The friend begins to ask what it about him is that she loves this man so much when he, is beats you up and disrespecting you not to mention you got pregnant by him. I was so mad at her I wanted to punch her out. Love will cloud a person's mind. He played on her emotion repeatedly and one day she took my advice and left you. Next thing I knew she took you back in and now she is dead, and I want to kill him. Then he had the nerves to act like he was mourning your death when he was the one who had caused it. I really wanted to kill him now that your gone I cannot understand, why you loved that man so strong. When love is blinding you, you will take anything and sometimes even death.

The third song is Let’s Talk About Sex. By Salt-N-Pepa. These ladies was alo on of my favorite rap group back in the 80’s back when women started to hit the stage for rapping which were mostly men rappers. The song begins by say let's talk about sex and what we will be encountering with each other while engaging in sex. Sex is a topic that should be talked about because it is happening all over the world. It is good to have the conversation about sex so that you can use precaution and practice safe sex. The song also say that women use sex to get what they want from men. The more sophisticated women go after the businesspeople and men with money. Women will use sex to gain a profit. The harsh reality of using sex to live a lavish lifestyle, you do not get the chance to experience true love with someone because you use sex to make money.

What I love about each of these songs is that they are telling a story from a women's perspective and is giving women a voice in the music industry's as well as men. Women are just as talented as the men are.

This is a picture of Beyonce’ and Jayz

Theme

The theme I choose to write about is part of the short story's I read in the class The one that stood out for me is by; Tyler the Creator, Flower boy. The theme is about facing your sexuality. This is so prevalent in our society today because so many people are being bully, pressure and disowned my family based on their sexual preferences. Times have come a log way from when people were not at all willing to tolerate same sex couples nor was being married to the same sex even though about being legally married. Tyler The Creator, express a few of his views about this matter. In one of his song "The Garden Shed", it say; "You don't have to hide I can smell it in your eyes That there's something more to say , baby "If I could , If I could If I could find the words to say Find the words in the Garden shed. To me, I gather that, you have experience a sexual encounter in a hiden place and don't know how to express your feelings about what happen behind the close doors. Also in the same song, he says, " That is where I was hidin" That was real love I was in Aint no reason tp pretend. This is unfortunately an all so familiar storys for gay and lesbians' individuals who are afraid to show their true identify due to fear of isolation and now being accept amongst their family or peers. In some cases, it could lead to suicided depending on the persons mental emotions. One thing I believe about this story is that, he want to be himself but he has to come to the realization that, you can not please everyone and some people no matter who they are, will always havw something to self but the most important thing is that you embrace you and who you are.and do what works best for you.

One thing I have to say is that, this was a very hard and challenging class for me. I must admit that this class has thought me how to read , understand and analyze literature. I learn the about how a character is developed which will make the story that much more lively. I learn about the type of character which were flat-two dimensional, Protagonist the change and Antagonist who work against the protagonist and the Static/dynamic. I learned about the Point of View, This is the first person telling the story from their perspective The one I really enjoyed was the lesson on poetry. I never realized that rap music was consider as part of the literature that rappers are expressing the emotions and feeling through the for of poetry. No matter how we look at it, story's play a major part in our society. We learn life lessons and our history through storyies that are told by those who lived through it in order to tell the story . All story in what ever form it is presented in are a very important part of our English literature
