It is not a secret that Soutar is a genius, so I decided to reach out to him and ask for collaboration on a project. Soutar graciously agreed. Soutar worked on the online server and game logic, and I worked on the graphics and the client-side logic. Together, we were able to complete an playable online-game! This was the first time that I have worked with another programmer, and it was a wonderful experience. Not only did he speak in an obscure way, he bore me to death.
Cicero's speech was my first "real" Latin experience, and it did a successful job at intimidating me. The 3rd person, the weird vocabs, the rhetorical question were just of many reasons why Cicero's speech was a nightmare to translate. Unlike Caesar, Cicero didn't have an interesting history. So not only was he hard to understand, he was also incredibly boring. The best, however, has to be Martial the poet. Martial was the first and best poet/writer that we studied. He wrote in a style that was humorous, but also challenging to decipher. That being said, I have to say that I enjoyed learning the history aspect of this unit. I was always fascinated with ancient Rome, and this just adds more to my understand of the glorious empire. The bad part, however, was the translation. Caesar used many literary devices such as alliteration, tricolon, and anaphora that made translating much more difficult. The vocabulary was also a pain. With the collaboration of my fellow classmates, I along with my classmates were able to finish the unit in one piece. Using this program, I can click on a word in a Latin text, and it will give me tons of information for that word. Translations were made so much easier using this tool. However, this also led me to my inevitable doom. I learned that I procrastinated a lot; I learned that I was careless; I learned that I was underestimating things. This self-paced program helped me to fix some of those things. I now finish my assignments on time (well, most of the time), I'm now more careful with my work, and I now examine a situation more thoroughly. I was always addicted to my phone. Without my phone, my life feels worthless and empty. After this course, however, I'm beginning to find meanings in my life again.
