At the beginning of the story, you can clearly see that Darry treats Pony very poorly. He always hollers at him, and has this sort of favoritism. He only tears Pony poorly, and only will stop when Soda tells him to stop. This is proven in the text when it states, "Me and Darry just didn't dig each other. I never could please him. He would have hollered at me for carrying a blade if I had one. ... He never hollered at Sodapop-not even when Soda dropped out of school or got tickets for speeding. He just hollered at me." Pg 15. This quote proves that Darry is clearly favoriting Soda. Because of this, I belive that there will be a point in the story where Darry will learn he has to treat Pony better.

Early on you can see there are major issues with Darry. He seems to boss and treat Pony worse than others. Not only is he disliked by Pony, it seems it may be the same way with Soda. All throughout the 1st chapter, you see Soda continuously tell Darry to leave Pony alone. Also, he shares something very important. In the text it states, "Shut up and I'll tell you something. Don't tell Darry though. Okay. I think i'm gonna marry Sandy. After she gets out of school and I get a better job and everything. I might have to wait till you get out of school, though." Pg 19. This shows a lot in only one quote. In the story, it clearly shows that Darry is somewhat of the leader. In this situation, Soda chose not to tell Darry, but instead tell Pony about something very important. If you're going to tell anybody, it would make sense to tell your leader. And because of this, it shows there is either a trust/power issue causing him not to tell Darry. Later on in the story there may be a situation where Darry recolonizes he is a poor leader, or he is taken from his position.

"Okay," I said nonchalantly, "might as well." (Hinton 25).
Nonchalantly means in a casual and calm way. When the girls ask Johnny and Ponyboy to sit with them in the theater, Ponyboy seems relaxed and calm in the girls' presence which is why he responded in a calm and collected way.

"Then someone had me under the armpits and was hauling me to my feet. It was Darry. Are you all right Ponyboy?"( Hinton 15) Right in the beginning there was trouble and Pony wasn't able to fight for himself. So his older brother who is a part of the gang gets there in time to have his back and help him get out of danger. The book already shows in many ways that all of these boys will be there and help each other with whatever they need and this is just one of the ways that it is shown.

After realizing that a lot of the characters have issues with Darry, there may be a reason for this. Darry was an incredibly popular, athletic, star in school. He even got a scholarship. This is proven in the text when it says, "Darry didn't deserve to work like an old man when he was only twenty. He had been a real popular guy in school; he was captain of the football team and he had been voted Boy of the Year. But we just didn't have the money for him to go to college, even with the athletic scholarship he won." Pg 18. This quote clearly shows that Darry didn't have a great turn of events. He was popular, captain of the football team, and had a scholarship. That was all taken away because of a lack of money. This is most likely what causes Darry to be so tough on everyone else, because of how unfortunate everything turned out for him. He could have had a perfect career playing professional football, but instead is roofing houses for a living. Sometimes people take out their anger on others and that may be why Darry is acting harsher towards everyone, especially Pony.

Unfathomable means to not or not be capable to understand and comprehend something. This is how it is used in this part of the book. Ponyboy does not know and understand why Two-Bit would like attending school at eighteen and a half while never learning a thing.

I was surprised when Johnny stood up for the girls and said something. It was the right thing to do since Dally had been bothering them a little bit. So far Johnny has seemed shy and too nervous to stand out or do things that would put him into a situation like this. I am glad that he did say something but I wouldn't have expected it to come from him.

I think that the people in the car are going to be the ones that jumped Johnny a while ago. Earlier in the book Johnny says it was a blue Mustang that had been there that day he got beat up. Also the second Johnny sees it he gets visibly scared and so nervous he loses some of his color. He then made a nervous sound too. Johnny seems to be not too tough and to be scared easily but he has only seen the car so far and he's already this worried about it. He hasn't even seen people inside of it or know if they have weapons or not. He would only be this scared if it was the people who jumped him I'm thinking.

Based on the events between pages 49-52, I think Ponyboy and Johnny are going to go on the run. If or when the police find out that Johnny killed Bob, they have to stay safe. In the book, Johnny says, "We gotta get outa here. Get somewhere. Run away. The police'll be here soon." I was trembling, and it wasn't all from cold. But Johnny, except for the fact that his hands were twitching, looked as cool as Darry ever had. "We'll need money. And maybe a gun. And a plan." (Hinton 52).
Johnny and Ponyboy are going to stick together after that night. In my opinion, i think Johnny killed Bob since he was terrified after the Socs jumped him. I think that on their way back from the park they are going to get into some trouble and get hurt. It is late and dark when they are walking which seems like a time it would happen and Johnny and Pony are the main ones that have been getting hurt in the book. If this doesn't happen then I think Darry will be even more mad at Ponyboy for going back out so late when it was already past his curfew. He might even get so mad and hit him for a second time even if he doesn't mean to

(Hinton 33).
Ponyboy was explaining to Cherry Valance how Johnny was terrified by the Socs ever since this event. I think this foreshadowed the event from pages 49-52 when Johnny killed Bob. This event shows Johnny's motives. Also, at the end of chapter 3, it states that "Things gotta get better, I figured. They couldn't get worse. I was wrong." (Hinton 48). This is probably foreshadowing that the story is going to get more intense as the chapters go on, after Ponyboy runs from home when Darry slapped him.
