Location: The First Battle of Ypres was fought on the Western Front and both sides had trenches that ranged from Switzerland to the North Sea.
Causes: The First Battle of Ypres began because the Germans wanted to gain access to the English Channel.
Battle Conditions: The land around the battlefield has been described as having a very dreary landscape. During the battle, the Belgians flooded a large area of land to create a water barrier between them and the Germans.
Sides: France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom against Germany
Casualties: During the First Battle of Ypres, Belgium suffered a large amount of casualties including about 10,000 wounded. The British casualties were about
58,000, the French casualties were about 86,000, and the German casualties were about 135,000.
Weapons: The weapons used during this battle included super heavy artillery, cavalry, infantry, vehicles made with bullet proof steel, and naval forces.
Result: The Allies won the Battle against the Germans and successfully stopped the Germans from getting to the English Channel.
If Germans won: If the Germans had won the First Battle of Ypres, there would not have been any attacks afterward and the Germans would have reached the English Channel which could have largely affected World War I.

Location: The Second Battle of Ypres was fought on the Western Front.
Causes: The Second Battle of Ypres started by the Germans surprise attacking the area with poison gas.
Battle Conditions: During the Second Battle of Ypres, the Germans used chlorine gas; this caused a bluish-white mist to appear on the Allied line.
Sides: Belgium, the French Empire, the British Empire, and even Canada against Germany
Casualties: During the Second Battle of Ypres, the British casualties were about 60,000, the French suffered a casualty of about 20,000, about 6,000 from Canada, and about 35,000 casualties in Germany
Weapons: The war started with a surprise attack from Germany that consisted of them firing over 150 tons of lethal chlorine gas. The Germans also used small tear-gas canisters in their weapons. The Germans also used shells filled with xylyl bromide, another lethal gas. The battle also consisted of artillery bombardment from both sides. Despite the very powerful gas that was used, the Germans did not make very sufficient gains in this battle; this may be due to the extreme temperatures that froze most of the gas.
Results: The Germans retreated due to a lack of supplies, despite their advancements. The Allied forces had about twice as many casualties because of the lethal gas attacks but the Germans had run out of sufficient supplies to hold their ground and had to retreat.
If Germans had won: If the Germans had won, their gas attacks would have taken many more lives and they would have made a strong advancement toward the English Channel. Also, although the Germans did not win the war, they learned much about the use of lethal gas in combat.

Location: The Battle of Passchendaele was fought on the Western Front around West Flanders.
Causes: The Battle of Passchendaele began because Sir Douglas Haig attacked as an attempt to break through Flanders.
Battle Conditions: In the Battle of Passchendaele, there were severe battle conditions that caused the troops to have to attack much more carefully. For example, the mud during this battle became a big issue for the troops.
Sides: The British army, France, Belgium, and Canada against Germany
Casualties: The Canadians lost over 4,000 lives and another 12,000 wounded, about 275,000 casualties occurred for the Allies, and about 220,000 Germans casualties.
Weapons: The weapons of this battle consisted of artillery units, grenades, tanks, flamethrowers, gas, machine guns, rifles
Results: After any losses, the Allies won the battle against the Germans in Belgium.
If Germans had won: If the Germans had won, their victory over the Allies would have given them significant gains in land which would allow them to reach the English Channel and attack multiple other countries easier.

Location: The Battle of Lys was fought on the Western Front.
Causes: The Battle of Lys began as another attempt for the Germans to break through the Allied lines.
Battle Conditions: The land around this area was relatively flat other than the trenches that were used during the battle. Like the Battle of Passchendaele, the land consisted of many large puddles of mud that affected the way that the troops had to attack their opposition.
Sides: Belgium, France, and the British Empire against Germany
Casualties: During this battle, unlike the others before, the Germans took the more of the casualties than the other countries. The British suffered about 240,000 casualties, France suffered about 90,000 casualties, and Germany suffered about 350,000 casualties.
Weapons: Like the battles before, the Battle of the Lys consisted of artillery, bombing raids, strafing runs, infantry, machine guns, wagons, and auxiliary.
Results: The Germans called off their offense due to the large amount of casualties that were taken, making this the fourth successful defense by the Belgians and the rest of the Allies.
If Germans had won: Once again, if the Germans had won, it would have lead to an advantage for the Central Powers against the Allies during WWI and the Germans would have finally made access to the English Channel.

Location: The Fifth Battle of Ypres was fought on the Western Front in Northern France and Southern Belgium.
Cause: The Fifth Battle of Ypres began because of Marshal Ferdinand Foch's strategy of making a wide line of troops on the Western Front.
Battle Conditions: Once again, a large portion of the ground around the area became covered in mud which mainly became an issue for the Allies in this case.
Sides: This battle consisted of Belgium, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States against Germany.
Casualties: Only about 10,000 casualties for the Allies in this battle and an unknown number of casualties for the Germans.
Weapons: The weapons used in this battle, like the ones before, included artillery, infantry, machine guns and auxiliary.
Results: The Germans called off their offenses due to the high grounds being taken by the Allies. The Allies gained a major advantage by doing this, making it a fifth and final successful defense for the Allies.
If Germans had won: If the Germans had won, morale for Germans would've risen and given them an advantage against the Allies. It would have taken a dent out of Allied troops because more and more were showing up to the Western Front. The Germans may have been able to recapture unoccupied previous battlegrounds, like Passchendaele.
