A mix of psychological and social factors drives social media addiction. A key psychological aspect is the release of dopamine, which creates a reward system similar to that found in gambling and drug addiction. Positive feedback, such as likes and comments, enhances this cycle, reinforcing user behavior. Additionally, emotional dependence and escapism lead individuals to use social media to cope with stress and loneliness. Socially, peer pressure and the desire for validation prompt constant engagement, while the fear of missing out further fuels compulsive use.

Researchers have developed models that prove social media addiction is sweeping young generations. One of these tools, known as SAMS or the Social Media Addiciton Scale checks for things like how many times individuals check social media platforms, when they check these platforms, mood changes when they are checked or not checked, if they have tried to cut back, and if it causes problems in their daily lives. Other tools like Depression Scales, CES-D's, and the Bergen Scale measure how social media use is linked to negative feelings like anxiety, rage, and depression. These emotions are linked to the same emotions individuals experience when dealing with Substance Abuse issues. These tools prove that social media addiction is not only a reality, but also a major issue sweeping the worlds next generation.

To help manage social media addiction, studies have shown that individuals that have strong support systems, like close friends, family, and loved ones can make a major difference. People who feel connected to real world people are scientifically less likely to struggle with being overwhelmed by social media. Cognitive - Behavioral Therapy and other programs can help teach individuals how to recognize negative patterns and habits, and create healtier ones. Educational Institutions can offer workshops and other resources that help students set healthy boundaries with technology and social media platforms.

Social media addiction affects society by altering interactions, reducing face-to-face communication, and straining family and community ties. It also leads to economic productivity losses as employees spend excessive time on social platforms during work. Culturally, social media influences trends and behaviors, giving rise to social influencers and new marketing strategies, while also facilitating issues like cyberbullying. Certain apps have been prone to showcasing dangerous trends like the cinnamon challenge and even some dance challenges like the Spiderman/Superman one. Understanding these societal effects is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of social media addiction and promote healthier lifestyles.
