I do a good job recycling paper, but I could do a better job recycling plastic bottles and using reusable containers instead of plastic bags. I'm also going to attempt to help reduce the amount of cars on the road by carpooling with my friends this summer and walking places if I can. For the past couple months I have not used a plastic straw for my drinks and rather used a portable metal straw. It is absolutely crazy how many plastic straws are used in restaurants. I have also done my best to cut down my overall plastic consumption by opting out of plastic water bottles and bags. By choosing to go green, I have influenced other people to do the same. I try not to, but I am pretty terrified of germs. Most of the time now restaurants offer paper straws, but that trend does not look like it has spread to Carlisle. We recycle metals and plastics. We also have a compost pile in our backyard that we use so that we don't throw out everything and then we use it to fertilize our yard. My mom also works for the Department of Conservation of Natural Resources in Harrisburg, so she is really involved in helping the environment. Because of that our family has always been pretty conscious of what we are doing to help the environment. But, I think our generation has the fire and determination to change things. I already drink out of a reusable water bottle and don't use straws at restaurants. I also pick up trash whenever I walk my dog and when I'm at the beach. There is nothing huge that I am doing, but even if we just make sure we are picking up our trash. We can make sure we recycle to, unlike our school.
